Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Loosing someone dear and near causes grief. Grief leads to disappointment. Grief related disappointment manifests symptoms as in the case of depression. But disappointment symptoms are far shorter in duration than depression. These symptoms will vanish in some days or weeks. Don’t worry. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, hobbies etc could help you divert your attention. I suggest cognitive therapy. Take care.

I want to ask For how to quite drink habit, I'm drinking from many years, now I want to quite this habit.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Your children will also have to attend meetings to work out their issues because of the father’s habit. In fact, they are all suffering from the Adult Children Of Alcoholics Syndrome (ACOAs), which in effect means that they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or can have cross addiction problems and they will have similar traits of the abusing alcoholic but in a milder form. There are special support groups for them all over the world. Should they touch or indulge in alcohol or any addictive substances or behaviors, they could also become full-fledged addicts themselves. Make a serious plan with the wife and children and whoever else’s support you can get and act on it fast.

Hello doctor, I quit smoke from today. Now I want to remove that smoke dust from my lungs So, suggest me some medicines.

MBBS, M.D.(Gen.Medicine)
General Physician, Chennai
It is good that you quit smoking or at least decided to quit. Smoking over a long period of time causes changes in the airways and the lungs. There is no accumulation of any dust. Whatever change that has already occurred will be set right by the body's own built-in mechanism depending on how severe it is.

I am working in night shift from last 13 years, probably due to this I am losing my memory. I lose my memory frequently and very easily. I cannot remember things. I cannot concentrate on anything. Is there a cure for this?

YOu ahve to get good sleep after work . 7 Ways to Remember Anything Research-based strategies to boost your memory and keep it strong 7 Strategies for Remembering 1.Become interested in what you're learning. We're all better remembering what interests us. Few people, for example, have a difficult time remembering the names of people they find attractive. If you're not intrinsically interested in what you're learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so. 2.Find a way to leverage your visual memory. You'll be surprised by how much more this will enable you to remember. For example, imagine you're at a party and are introduced to five people in quick succession. How can you quickly memorize their names? Pick out a single defining visual characteristic of each person and connect it to a visual representation of their name, preferably through an action of some kind. Remember: Memory is predominantly visual. 3.Create a mental memory tree. If you're trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. Construct big branches first, then leaves. Branches and leaves should carry labels that are personally meaningful to you in some way, and the organization of the facts ("leaves") should be logical. 4.Associate what you're trying to learn with what you already know. It seems the more mental connections we have to a piece of information, the more successful we'll be in remembering it. This is why using mnemonics. Write out the items to be memorized over and over and over. 5.When reading for retention, summarize each paragraph in the margin. This requires you to think about what you're reading, recycle it, and teach it to yourself again. Even take the concepts you're learning and reason forward with them; apply them to imagined novel situations, which creates more neural connections to reinforce the memory. 6.Do most of your studying in the afternoon. Though you may identify yourself as a "morning person" or "evening person" at least one Study. Suggests your ability to memorize isn't influenced as much by what time of day you perceive yourself to be most alert but by the time of day you actually study—afternoon appearing to be the best. 7.Get adequate sleep to consolidate and retain memories. Not just at night after you've studied but the day, you study as well. Far better to do this than to stay up cramming all night for an exam.

Depression In Kids - Know The Possible Signs!

Depression In Kids - Know The Possible Signs!

The stress of a modern lifestyle have taken a toll on the mental health of the population all over the world. Earlier, it was adults who were mostly affected by the problems of depression, anxiety and stress. However, with the passage of time, even children are also suffering from major mental health problems, the roots of which again are anxiety, stress and depression.

Reasons behind it
Be it adults or children, the major cause of health issues is stress. Stress doesn’t only cause mental health problems, but serious physiological disorders as well such as hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, sexual problems as well as other issues. If the anxiety or stress persists, it would then slowly develop into a pattern of the mind and then become conditioned, thus leading to depression. Nowadays, children are also being afflicted by depression. Similar to adults, depression in children is caused due to any combination of factors that are related to life events, physical health, family history, genetic vulnerability, environment and biochemical disturbance. It should be noted that depression is not just a passing phase. The symptoms are often left undiagnosed as well as untreated. This is because they are passed off as normal psychological and emotional changes that occur naturally during growth.

Some of the typical symptoms are:

  1. Loss of interest in pleasurable activities such as hobbies or crafts which were pursued earlier eagerly
  2. Loss of concentration
  3. Sudden outbursts
  4. Sleeping too much or sleeping too little, suddenly waking up early in the morning
  5. Constant fatigue, decreased energy and being slower than usual at tasks
  6. Excessively low appetite or increased appetite which would thus result in weight loss or binge eating resulting in weight gain
  7. The development of physiological disorders which may stop responding to treatment. Many children develop headaches or digestion problems which aren’t resolved by medication.
  8. Always sad or irritable or in a depressed mood
  9. May find it difficult to sleep or concentrate on work and thus, studies and grades may suffer
  10. Extreme and sudden mood changes accompanied by incessant crying
  11. Suicidal thoughts
  12. Loss of energy as well as lowered self esteem

With children, you have to be extra careful not to ill-diagnose the problems and if they persist for more than a few weeks, you should seek professional help. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

It appears that probably you had post delivery depression after the birth of your 2nd child, which was not treated. You also might be having lots of sadness and grief which did not get any outlet, and hence, become more intese now. This is the reason you feel like crying all the time. I guess you have ptsd - post traumatic stress disorder. You might have experienced or heard about some traumatic events like, accidents, earthquakes, tsunami etc which were very devastating. As a child it affecred your mind and has left a strong impact on you. Probably you are very scared of losing someone close to you. You might be afraid of death. All this together is causing your anxiety and sadness. Please continue with the medication as the doctor's advice. Also take an appointment with a counsellor. Relieving your painful emotions which are suppressed till not will help you a lot.

Hello Friend, Most psychiatric treatments need combination of medications and psychotherapies. Just be aware that medicines helps only in suppressing the emotions and sometime causes side effects due to various reason. So In parallel, you need start non medicine treatments to manage and control your anxious thoughts and emotion.
