Hello Mr. Lybrate-user. The afternoon sun especially is very bright. With our vehicles pollution, noise and the glare is very high. Wear anti glare glasses- easily available in any optician shop. Cover your head and put cotton in your ears when you go out. Use dark colored curtains at home to shut the sun out inside the house. Hope this helps. Warm regards,

My 5 year daughter underwent a sonography today since she was having slight stomach pain every 15-20 days for 1-2 days (which used to get resolved by taking medicines). The sonography says there is slight inflammation on the appendix. I am worried - is this treatable by medicines or will it require surgery?

Hello. It is understandable that you are worried about your little girl! however all types of appendicitis need not be treated with surgery. Medical treatment is given first, failing which the appendix needs to be surgically removed. But make sure you are under the care of a good surgeon who will know when do perform the surgery. Include a lot of fiber in her diet so that she is not constipated. Hope this helps.

There is itchiness and some boils in my pubic area. How can I control it? It is happening me from 3-4 years.
Hello due to your age, there may be infections in the hair follicles- boils in the pubic area. Itching may be fungal infection- very common in those areas due to increased sweating. Use lots of talcum powder to absorb sweat. Consult a dermatologist or your local gp for these easily treatable causes.

Hello Ms. Lybrate-user. I understand it is unbearably hot! unfortunately when we start drinking cold water, we catch these colds. Kindly avoid drinking very cold water. Use pot water instead. Cold water bath is ok but only after sunset. The problem is extremes of temperatures usually make us land up with colds. Taking watery fruits is ok but, only little cooler than room temp. Not very cold. Steam inhalation will help you recover from your cold. Hope this helps.

Certificate course in Pain Relief and Palliative care, MBBS
General Physician, Secunderabad
Hello vit. B 12 levels take some time to build up in the body and they go down quickly especially in stress. Over the counter supplements of b12 are available but it is better to use them after consulting a physician. Also include fresh sprouts- moong dal sprouts, friuts veges in your diet to increase natural sources of vit b12. Hope this helps. Warm regards.

Hello Ms. Lybrate-user. Sounds like you are having a viral fever. Please take some steam inhalation and gargle with salt water. You can only take paracetamol. Do not take any other meds as they may be secreted in the breast milk. Please check for any other symptoms like sore breasts, burning in urine, etc. Consult a physician before taking antibiotics. Hope this helps.

Hello doctor
I got little ear pain and my chik got swelling one side. Can you suggest me medicine.
Hello Ms. Lybrate-user. What you are describing may be an ear infection or may be parotitis or even mumps- an infection that raises the earlobe due to swelling of the cheek. You can look up mumps on the internet and consult an ent doctor for ear infection and a general physician for mumps. Hope this helps. Warm regards,

Hello lybrate-user. I appreciate the fact that you need to wear your hijab. When a person is not exposed to the sunlight, the skin cannot manufacture any vit. D3 which is an essential vitamin for calcium absorption. This may lead to dizzy spells, headaches, and ill health. My advice would be to check your serum vit. D3 levels. But it is a very costly blood test. Better still would be to consult a general physician and he can prescribe vit d3 tablets for you because it needs to be taken for over few months. Hope this helps. Warm regards,

My wife suffering with cold and fever. She had 30days old kid she feeds milk. Is it any effect on my kid.

Certificate course in Pain Relief and Palliative care, MBBS
General Physician, Secunderabad
Hello Mr. Lybrate-user. Your wife can continue breastfeeding the baby. It is not advisable to take medicines though, as the drug may be secreted in the breast milk. But your wife can try taking steam inhalation at home at least 3-4 times per day for a couple of days and if fever persists, consult an obstetrician for a suitable antibiotic to prevent the child from getting the cold as well. Hope this helps. Warm regards.

Sir I have a cold problem through out the year please give advice for that I have some nose problem or immunity or any other problem please give the proper advice.

Certificate course in Pain Relief and Palliative care, MBBS
General Physician, Secunderabad
Hello, it sounds like you live in a very dusty sort of place or you allergic to something in the air? (pollen, etc.) if so you will also sneeze many times in the mornings. If this is so, a simple anti allergic tablet once at night will help. Also steam inhalation once at night and once before you leave home in the morning will help. Cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief while driving. If your cold symptoms are not seasonal and you have a problem throughout the year, then it is advisable to see an ent surgeon to check for a deviated nasal septum or some other growth in the nose or throat.

I had unprotected sex with my girl friend last night and I am really worried about the HIV.

Certificate course in Pain Relief and Palliative care, MBBS
General Physician, Secunderabad
Hello Mr. Lybrate-user. It is understandably natural to be worried but always remember" prevention is better than cure" you can get your hiv status checked at any government run hiv centre. It is reliable and confidential. But hiv may not show up immediately so be sure to repeat the test in 3 months time. Use of a condom helps prevent not only hiv but other sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea, chlamydia which affect males as well and may cause with having a child later on in life. Hope this helps.

Hello. Poly cystic ovarian disease means that there are fluid filled bags/ cysts in the ovary. In this condition, the patient has symptoms like putting on weight (which may explain" increase in stomach circumference"), pimples, increased facial hair, etc. The problem really comes up when the couple is trying to have a baby as the patient has irregular periods. So try and lose weight by cutting down on carbohydrates and regular exercise. For medical treatment you need an ultrasound scan of the abdomen and you need to consult a gynecologist. Hope this helps.

Hello chronic duodenal ulcer is well known to cause heavy bleeding which explains the black coloured stool. Since h. Pylori is negative, the said treatment seems to have been started. This needs a surgical gastroenterologist (surgeon who specializes in intestinal surgery) care at the earliest. Diet wise, make sure patient takes a semi solid diet. Include some chicken or mutton liver weekly in his diet to make up for the blood he's losing. Hope this helps. Warm regards,

My sister Eats chalks and cements why this happens how can it be cured? She is eating it from last 6years can it be harmful?

Certificate course in Pain Relief and Palliative care, MBBS
General Physician, Secunderabad
Hello Ms. Lybrate-user. The condition that you are describing is called pica. It is quite common in women in reproductive age group. Since they loose blood during periods and are not able to make up for it, gthe body signals them to eat these things like chalk, mud, cement, etc. It signals the body's deficiency of blood. You can do a blood test (cbp) and see how much her hemoglobin is- if it is less some iron tablets can be started. Also you can give her some deworming medicine- to get rid of worms in stools (quite common in indian patients). Before all this it is advisable to get a blood test done called cbp- complete blood picture.

Hello, fungal infections tend to flare up in the summer due to the increased sweating. So my advise would be to keep the area dry- apply any talcum powder (around the groin i. E. Where the thigh meets the genital area), in the armpits, under the elastic of the bra, etc. (because if you scratch where the infection is and touch the other parts of the body, infection may spread). Apply an antifungal ointment (my suggestion would be whitfield's ointment- old but effective cure and also cheap) atleast 3-4 times per day. The infection (itching) will subside in 3-4 days but you need to continue application till the blackness in the skin subsides which will take atleast 6 weeks. Otherwise the infection will come back again.
