Simple Yet Effective Lifestyle Changes to Help You Manage Diabetes!

Simple Yet Effective Lifestyle Changes to Help You Manage Diabetes!

Keeping the blood sugar at the recommended level can be a challenging task at times. While timely medication is a key prerequisite for controlling diabetes, lifestyle changes plays an important role in keeping the blood sugar under control.

Here is a list of simple yet effective ways of managing diabetes.

  1. Food
    • Portion size and carbohydrate count: Carbohydrates are the single most important food element that impacts the level of blood sugar in body. People taking insulin shots should ensure that the portion size of carbohydrates does not exceed the recommended level. Maintaining a diary to keep a check on the carbohydrate count can help in this case.
    • Balanced diet: For people suffering from diabetes, it is necessary to have a good mix of fruits, vegetables, fat, starch and protein in each meal. Carbohydrates should be consumed in the form of fruits and whole grains. A doctor advice in this matter can be of great help.
    • Avoid sweetened beverages: Sweetened beverages with high sucrose and fructose content have high-calorie content that can directly impact the blood-sugar level. Refraining from these sweetened drinks is a must for diabetes patients.
  2. Exercise
    • Make an exercise plan: Exercising for half hour on a daily basis is highly beneficial for diabetes patients. It makes sense to consult a doctor about the type of exercise that can be done regularly. The right mix of aerobic, cardio and muscle exercise should do the trick.
    • Stay hydrated: Staying hydrated is very important during exercise. Dehydration can bring down the blood-sugar level drastically.
    • Be prepared: Carrying a small dose of glucose or a snack can come in handy. In case the blood-sugar level drops to an alarming level while exercising, the glucose will ensure that it brings it back to normal quickly.
  3. Alcohol
    • Follow the doctor’s instruction: Alcohol is known to cause a lot of complications for diabetic patients. For people whose diabetes is under control, make sure that the doctor gives his go ahead for alcohol consumption.
    • Drink carefully: If you get a doctors nod to drink make sure that dry wines and light beer are consumed. These drinks tend to have lesser calories and carbohydrates. Their impact on the blood-sugar level, therefore, becomes minimal.
  4. Stress
    • Pattern: Stress greatly increases the blood-sugar level. While it is difficult to be stress-free, try to look for a pattern by checking the blood-sugar level after prolonged stress. This will help to identify a pattern which can then be addressed with methods such as yoga, hobby practicing, laughter therapy, etc.
    • Get help: Stress management is not an easy task. If stress cannot be controlled with a conventional approached, it makes sense to get professional help to reduce stress.

What is upper and lower motor nureon and what is it's importance in body and disease related to it.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
What is upper and lower motor nureon and what is it's importance in body and disease related to it.
Upper Motor Neurons (UMN) motoneurons that originate in the cerebral cortex (motor strip), terminating in the brainstem or spinal cord UMNs in the pyramidal tract directly synapse with LMNs UMNs in the extrapyramidal tract synapse with neurons in the red nucleus or the reticular formation UMNs that provide contralateral innervation to LMNs are on the opposite side of the brain as the muscle, UMNs that provide bilateral innervation to LMNs "talk" to muscles on both sides of the body UMNs course through the corona radiata, internal capsule, cerebral peduncle, and finally synapse in the midbrain/pons/medulla/spinal cord Lower Motor Neurons (LMN) motoneurons that originate in the brainstem (cranial nerves) or spinal cord (spinal nerves), terminating at the neuromuscular junction (muscles) all LMNs innervate ipsilateral muscles (the muscle and the LMN that innervates it are always on the same side) LMNs receive input from upper motor neurons from the opposite side of the brain (contralateral UMN innervation) or from both sides of the brain (bilateral UMN innervation) Cranial Nerves with bilateral UMN innervation: V, VII (upper face), IX, X, XI Cranial Nerves with primarily contralateral UMN innervation: VII (lower face), XII LMN Symptoms include pharyngeal muscle weakness (involved with swallowing), weak jaw and facial muscles, progressive loss of speech, and tongue muscle atrophy. Limb weakness with both lower and upper motor neuron signs is almost always evident but less prominent. UMN- Primary lateral sclerosis is a disease of the upper motor neurons, while progressive muscular atrophy affects only lower motor neurons in the spinal cord. In progressive bulbar palsy, the lowest motor neurons of the brain stem are most affected, causing slurred speech and difficulty chewing and swallowing.

Hi, losing 20 kgs in just 3 months is not advisable. Lose gradually. You must be feeding your baby, so don't go for fad diet. Eat balanced one. Include complex carbohydrates, sufficient proteins and healthy fats, seasonal fruits, leafy vegetables in sufficient amount. Hydrate yourself well. Avoid foods which are loaded with ghee, fried foods, sweets and junk. Take sufficient rest.

Taking medicines or supplements will not work in isolation. You have to have a calorie and nutrient dense meal.

Piles occur when the veins surrounding the anus are inflamed. Bleeding occurring in the anal area, itching, discomfort, and swelling may indicate piles/ haemorrhoids. Precautions- Have regular food habits as well as habit of going for motion. Don’t avoid when you have an urge for going to toilet. Take 2 to 3 glasses of warm water in the morning. This will help in reducing acidity as well as hardness of stool and you don’t have to strain your pelvic muscles. Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water and having fruits and vegetable juices Avoid sitting for long time at one place. Sedentary habit causes constipation. Driving bike or cycle for long duration at a time may be avoided. Travelling in a car or bus for long journey is also not good. Train is better as you can change positions. Avoid chillies, masalas and such hot foods. Take easily digestible foods including curds and fruits. We have very good treatment in homoeopathy. To start with, take Nux vom 200 twice daily morning and evening and give feedback after 5 days.

As per your concern i would suggest you to do following remedy 1. Take 1 glass warm water 2. Crush some cardamom seeds to get ½ tsp cardamom powder 3. Add it to the water 4. Mix well 5. Dear lybrate-user, is there swelling (hydronephrosis) in kidneys? if so, it needs urgent treatment. Otherwise medical therapy can be tried. Only uric acid stones of this size are easy to dissolve. Calcium oxalate types are difficult to dissolve. You can get a 24 hour urine metabolic study to find out the reason for stone formation and start stone treatment. The size can be reassessed in 2 to 3 months. If the size is decreasing, then therapy can be continued. Otherwise, flexible ureteroscopy with laser will give complete cure. Wish you good health,
