Diabetes - Why It Is The Worst Disease For Your Eyes?

MBBS, MD - Ophthalmology, Fellowship in Vitreo Retina, Fellowship in Cornea
Ophthalmologist, Bangalore
Diabetes - Why It Is The Worst Disease For Your Eyes?

If you are diabetic then it is important that you visit your Ophthalmologist for regular retinal check-ups. Even if you have no eyesight problem at all Diabetes is known to be one of the main causes of blindness in this modern time. If you suffer from bouts of blurred vision then it can be as simple as fluctuating blood sugar levels in the body. Hence, don't make new glasses if your blood glucose is high or fluctuating. Wait until about 3 to 4 weeks after it reaches stable levels.

How diabetes affects your eyes?
The lens of your eyes can swell due to diabetes, and this blurs your vision.

What are the serious problems that are caused by diabetes?

  1. Cataract: Cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes foggy. Although cataract mostly occurs in people who are above fifty, one can get this at an earlier age in diabetics. It progresses at a much faster rate than usual in diabetics. Cataracts also make retinal assessment more difficult for your Retinal surgeon. Once the diabetes is under control, diabetics can comfortably undergo modern cataract surgery. Healing will be as good as in normals, and visual recovery will be excellent if there is no Retinopathy. The modern topical Phaco surgery and IOL implantation can be performed with a hospital daycare stay of only a few hours, and almost all the activities can be resumed on the very next day. There is no need to stop blood thinners.
  2. Glaucoma: This is another disease that can silently cause blindness in diabetes. Due to the nondraining of fluids from the eye, the intraocular pressure goes up, and this causes damage to the delicate Optic nerve of the eye. The vision remains spuriously good till the end stages. Hence annual eye pressure check-up is mandatory for Glaucoma. Glaucoma tends to run in families. If Glaucoma is diagnosed or suspected, OCT of optic nerves and Ganglion cell layer and Visual fields are periodically performed to assess the possible worsening. Once damaged, the ganglion cells and the optic nerve cannot be rejuvenated. So prevention is the mainstay of treating this disease. Usually, eye drops will be prescribed, which should be used strictly as per advice. Sometimes a surgery is advised.
  3. Diabetic Retinopathy: It is a progressive damage to the fine vessels and to the nourishment of the retina. It can occur in either type 2 or type 1 diabetes. Till end stages of the illness, there may not be any symptoms, and vision will remain good! There are two major types, Macular where fluid accumulates in the central retina, and Proliferative, where retinal ischemia sets in causing vaso proliferation, which cause bleeding inside the eye. If not treated in early stages, both of them can lead to blindness. Retinal LASERS, Anti VEGF injections and vitreoretinal surgery are the common approaches, depending on the seriousness. There has been a tremendous improvement in the surgical techniques in advanced cases.

If you have of diabetes or even borderline diabetic tendencies, it is advisable to periodically check your blood sugar levels, Hemoglobin, Creatinine, Blood pressure & Lipid levels and also get your eyes checked at regular intervals. It is recommended that you need a pupil dilated vitreo retinal assessment as soon as you are diagnosed to have diabetes, and follow up once a year. If you already are suffering from Diabetics retinopathy, you may be asked to review once in 3 to 6 months.

Find the cause whether it is due to night time awakening or some cosmetic you are applying under eyes or it is just effect of light (Tyndall  effect) or it is hereditary. Take plenty of fluids, sleep at night at right time. Apply cetaphil moisturing cream around eyes in day time & Fixderma under eye cream at night on dark circles for 3 months. 20 % to 80% improvement depending on the cause. If there is no improvement ,consult dermatologist with MD or DNB Dermatogy qualification.

Hello, Vaginal discharge serves an important function in the female reproductive system. Fluid made by glands inside the vagina and cervix carries away dead cells and bacteria. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection. Most of the time, vaginal discharge is perfectly normal. The amount can vary, as can odor and hue (its color can range from clear to a milky white-ish), depending on the time in your menstrual cycle. For example, there will be more discharge if you are ovulating, breastfeeding, or are sexually aroused. However, there are certain types of discharge that can indicate an infection. Abnormal discharge may be yellow or green, chunky in consistency, or have a foul odor. Abnormal discharge is usually caused by yeast or bacterial infection. If you notice any discharge that looks unusual or is foul smelling, you should see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. None of those changes is cause for alarm. However, if the color, smell, or consistency seems significantly unusual, especially if it accompanied by vaginal itching or burning, you could be noticing an infection or other condition. If you have unusual discharge with other symptoms such as a fever, pain in the abdomen, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or increased urination, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about the normality of a discharge, make an appointment to see your doctor. Home Care for Vaginal Discharge: Here are some tips for preventing vaginal infections that can lead to abnormal discharge: Keep the vagina clean by washing regularly with a gentle, mild soap and warm water. Never use scented soaps and feminine products or douche. Also avoid feminine sprays and bubble baths. After going to the bathroom, always wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from getting into the vagina and causing an infection. Wear 100% cotton underpants, and avoid overly tight clothing. Don’t use douches because they can make discharge worse by removing useful bacteria. You should also practice safe sex and use protection to avoid sexually transmitted diseases. To decrease the likelihood of yeast infections when taking antibiotics, eat yogurt that contains live and active cultures. If you know you have a yeast infection, you can also treat it with an over-the-counter yeast infection cream or suppository.

Hello 1. If ideally speaking you should wear glasses. That will help you to see better 2. Practically. If you don't have any visual complaint or no headache you can avoid them I would recommend you to wear one.

Hello sir, I am 26 Years Old Boy With Number Of Eyeglasses Left= (2.15) What should i do to cure?
Hello. There is no medication or food for improving eye sight or to get rid of glasses. Get your vision tested and wear glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser as your age is now 26 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.
