Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS

How old are you (25 years or 2 yrs)? bleeding from the nose is common in summer. One need not unduly worry about it. Pinch the nose for about 5 minutes. The bleeding should stop. If it does not then you need to consult an ent surgeon.

I have severe sinus issues and in winters I get breathing issues. I did CT scan and PNS for that on which the doctors told me to go for operation. Is there any other remedy for that? Will the operation be able to cure sinus completely?

BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Hi lybrate-user, Soft growths arising from mucous membrane of nose or paranasal sinus are referred as nasal polyps. They are painless and non cancerous growths. There is no specific cause leading to nasal polyps. However, certain factors including nasal allergies, nasal infections and chronic nasal catarrh are linked with formation of nasal polyps. Nasal polyps lead to symptoms of stuffy nose, post nasal drip, sneezing, runny nose, loss of smell and headaches Also if this is a seasonal allergy and sinus issue, you can go for Homeopathy. The most common treatment option suggested by conventional system in nasal polyps is surgical removal; But surgery offers a  temporary relief  in many cases. This is so because surgery is just excising the polyps and not taking care of the body’s tendency to form polyps. In most cases, Nasal polyps reappear after surgery. Homeopathy offers effective, natural and alternative treatment for nasal polyps. Homeopathic medicines promise a permanent cure in nasal polyps by treating the root cause.  Homeopathic medicines cure nasal polyps in a safe and gentle manner.

I had sinus or migraine as one side face ache? Severe one sided face ache frequently what is it cure?

MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology, FIPM
Pain Management Specialist, Pune
One sided facial pain is not due to migraine. It can be due to: 1. Tooth infection: Consult a dentist first to rule out dental pathology as cause of facial pain. 2. Sinusitis: Associated nasal congestion, features of upper respiratory infections are present. ENT consultation is needed. 3. Trigeminal Neuralgia: Sharp, shooting electric shock like pain in bursts felt along particular part of face It is easily relieved with medication and if needed intervention like Gasserian ganglion block. Consult a pain specialist for this. 4. Idiopathic facial pain: This condition is simply facial pain without any reason. This can be managed by medication and if needed injection. Consult a pain specialist for this. For detailed evaluation and treatment accordingly consult with a pain specialist.

How do i test for polyps in my nose ?

MS (ENT & HEAD AND NECK SURGERY), MBBS

Nasal polyps are a type of inflammatory tissue that can grow in the nasal cavity and sinuses. They occur more frequently in persons with allergies and/or asthma. Nasal obstruction and anosmia ( lack of smell sensation) is the most common symptom. Polyps are diagnosed based on symptoms and then nasal endoscopy is done to confirm and a CT scan may also be required.

I have bad breath problem my mouth is smelling very bad I did scaling brush my teeth and tongue properly thrice a day and also visited a doctor but no response I got. I have nose allergy but not sinus.

I have bad breath problem my mouth is smelling very bad I did scaling brush my teeth and tongue properly thrice a day...
•Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. •Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. •Reduce your alcohol consumption. •Stop smoking. •Cut down on coffee. •Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. •Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. •Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. •Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. •Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. •Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. •Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. •Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. •If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. •Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. •You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too.

It could be because of infection or inflammation in sinus. So its better to have consultation with ent doctor. You can do steam inhalation for her which will help clear the mucus.

I feel dizziness for last few days after taking bath, even though I use luke warm water. I feel little restlessness which last for half an hour. What could be the reason. Thanks.

M S, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Gurgaon
If there is no associated hearing issues and dizziness occurs only during bathing with luke warm water, then it is due to caloric stimulation of inner ear due to warm water. You may take water precautions using cotton smeared with vaseline petroleum jelly as ear plug during bathing.

I see you are already taking Azithromycin (AZIWOK) for your throat. Finish the course as prescribed to you. Add salt-water gargles (as often as possible). Plenty of warm fluids and rest will help you get better. If symptoms persist even after one week, see an ENT doctor in your area. Stay hydrated.

7 Ayurveda Tips for EarAches and Ear Health

Treat Earaches the Natural Way

Earaches can cause great discomfort. Most of them occur due to infection in the ear. As a result fluid may collect in the middle ear that causes pain. Some other reasons may be physical damage to the inner structure of the ear, buildup of wax in the ear, blockage of nasal passage or may be common cold. Sometimes these may call for medical intervention.

However, simple earaches can be treated with the help of these easy natural home remedies:

1. Garlic

Garlic has antibiotic and analgesic properties that help to relieve earaches.

- Crush a small piece of garlic and heat with 2 teaspoon of sesame oil. Filter and cool it.

- Put 2-3 drops in the infected ear.

2. Ginger

Ginger too like garlic has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

- Take 1 teaspoon of ginger juice and mix it with 2 tablespoons of olive oil

- Put 2-3 drops in the hurting ear to get relief

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

A potent substance, apple cider vinegar works well for all types of health problems including earaches

- Put 2-3 drops in the infected ear

- Repeat again after 12 hours to get relief

4. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil with its anti-bacterial features is also effective remedy for earaches.

- Add a few drops to a tablespoon of olive oil and warm them

- Take 2-3 drops of this oil and put it into the infected ear for relief

5. Juice from Mango Leaves

Mango leaves too have an antibiotic action and can relieve earache.

- Extract juice by crushing 3-4 fresh mango leaves

- Slightly warm up this extract

- Put 2-3 drops in the ear that hurts

6. Drink Herbal Tea

Herbal Tea made from Chamomile or Holy Basil provides warmth and can help to get rid of infections. With relaxing and healing properties, these herbal teas can be used to get relief from earaches.

7. Rubs for Earache

- Mix 10 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil along with 10 drops of Lavender Essential oil in ¼ cup of Olive oil.

- Rub few drops from this oil around the ears to get relief from inflammation and infection of the ears.

- You can also rub Lemon Balm instead of essential oils to ease pain in the ears.
