Hello, Thanks for the query. Hypothyroidism can be due to problem in the synthesis of Thyroxine in thyroid gland - which could be due either deficiency of Iodine or some other metabolic problem. Another major cause is the hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT) which an autoimmune condition causing hypothyroidism. In this there are increased number of antibodies against the enzyme Thyroid Peroxidase, which plays a major role in Thyroxine synthesis. WHether one has HT or simple hypothyroidism the treatment is same. To give adequate dose of Levothyroxine and control hypothyroidism, ENdocrinologist handles these conditions effectively, like I do here. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The condition that you have is known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. This leads to infiltration of thyroid cells with a large quantity of lymphocytes, leading to the gland becoming firm and may be granular in appearance. There are antibodies against the enzyme Thyroid peroxidase (Anti TPO Abs). TSH value goes up signifying hypothyroidism. Some times TSH value may not be too high, but patient has all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. The only treatment is to give adequate dose of Levothyroxine, which will take care of symptoms of hypothyroidism. There is no other option. Treatment with levothyroxine has to be for lifetime. Plus addition of Selenium to therapy does help in reducing the anti TPO antibodies. If proper tratment is taken you will live a fairly normal life. You will have to avoid soy beans and soy containing foods. Thanks.

Mr. Lybrate-user, I will be glad to answer your query, but I am unable to understand what exactly is your doubt. Hypothyroidsm can develop due to many reasons, like deficiency of iodine leading to goitre, radiation exposure to thyroid gland, certain drugs might have affected the gland or there may be hashimoto's thyroiditis (ht). In usa this is the main cause of developing hypothyroidism more so in women. This is autoimmune disease, where antibodies are produced against thyroid peroxidase enzyme, these antibodies destroy thyroxine secreting cells resulting in hypothyroidism. There is a lymphocytic infiltration ofthyroid gland, it becomes lobulated and firm. Treatment is to give thyroxine tablets for lifetime. If you still have any doubt please do comeback, thanks.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a condition caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body inappropriately attacks the thyroid gland - as if it was foreign tissue. The underlying cause of the autoimmune process remains unknown. Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to occur in families. It can be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is 5 to 10 times more common in women than in men and most often starts in adulthood. Blood drawn from people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis typically reveals an increased number of antibodies against thyroid-specific proteins, including thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin. T- lymphocytes, a type of cell involved in the inflammation process, invade the thyroid gland cause silent, painless inflammation that destroys it; ultimately, the individual produces little or no thyroid hormone and becomes hypothyroid.----------------•The treatment of choice for Hashimoto's thyroiditis is typically synthetic T4 or thyroxine (levothyroxine) along with homoeopathic medicine THYROIDINUM- 3X (Schwabe Gernam) by chewing 2 tabs twice daily so as to keep the dosage of Levothyroxine under check. Mr. Lybrate-user, hashimoto's disease (ht), is an autoimmune disease where there are antibodies prepared against thyroxine secreting cells, this leads to deficiency of thyroxine hormone and hypothyroidism. There is lymphocytic infiltration of thyroid gland, it becomes firm and lobulated. There are anti bodies against thyroid peroxidase enzyme (anti tpo ab). One of the causes for ht is said to be excess iodine intake through iodinated salt. Most of the patients with ht are likely to have other autoimmune diseases like t1 dm, rheumatoid arthritis etc. Treatment is with thyroxine tablets, iodine has no role in this disease.
