Hello lybrate-user, Papilledema is itself not a disease, it just means that there is increased fluid pressure around the brain. Releasing the pressure by spinal tap (lumbar puncture) is only a temporary solution. The treatment should be aimed at treating the underlying cause which increased the pressure in first place. Common causes include haemorrhage or tumours, which need neurosurgery and other causes include hydrocephalus, which needs stent placement (called VP shunt). Your brother must have suffered from fracture of skull bones with brain injury/ haematoma or haemorrhage. You haven't mentioned whether he is in ICU/ ventilator or on support systems. Mostly such situations are life threatening. You can't do much in such situation except let doctors do their best.
