A colour doppler venous is sufficient to diagnose dvt. You will need to be on anticoagulant therapy. To find out the cause of dvt you need to undergo some blood test like factor v leiden mutation apla homocyatiene levels protein c and s levels etc. Complications are many bit most dangerous for any patient is pulmonary thromboembolism. Surgical treatment is only for removal of thrombus.
