Cataract is an ageing lens. Just like your hair will go grey and eventually white, the fibres of your lens are initially transparent and with age they become translucent and then opaque. Essentially, you cannot prevent it because you cannot stop yourself from ageing. It cannot spread. It will need a surgery when it is visually significant. Occasionally, cataracts are also caused due to trauma to the eye, other metabolic diseases, etc and may also be congenital (by birth)
