My father is an 82 year old senior citizen with weak vision for near and long distances. Additionally he's also been advised surgery for cataract in both his eyes. We aren't able to decide if we should go for a multifocal or a regular bifocal / progressive. Though I have read that multifocal significantly improves the vision after the surgery (having multiple powers for various viewing distances) but it seems to take a while before it gets completely adjusted. He doesn't have diabetes and has blood pressure which is controlled with medicines. Money is not a consideration. Please advise. Thanks. Rohit Vats.

Multifocal IOLs are effective at improving near vision relative to monofocal IOLs. Whether that improvement outweighs the adverse effects of multifocal IOLs will vary between patients, with motivation to achieve spectacle independence likely to be the deciding factor.
