Lifestyle changes can help you control and prevent high blood pressure, even if you're taking blood pressure medication. Here's what you can do: Eat healthy foods. Eat a healthy diet. Try the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish and low-fat dairy foods. Get plenty of potassium, which can help prevent and control high blood pressure. Eat less saturated fat and trans fat. Decrease the salt in your diet. A lower sodium level — 1,500 milligrams (mg) a day — is appropriate for people 51 years of age or older, and individuals of any age who are black or who have hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Otherwise healthy people can aim for 2,300 mg a day or less. While you can reduce the amount of salt you eat by putting down the saltshaker, you generally should also pay attention to the amount of salt that's in the processed foods you eat, such as canned soups or frozen dinners. Maintain a healthy weight. Keeping a healthy weight, or losing weight if you're overweight or obese, can help you control your high blood pressure and lower your risk of related health problems. If you're overweight, losing even 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms) can lower your blood pressure. Increase physical activity. Regular physical activity can help lower your blood pressure, manage stress, reduce your risk of several health problems and keep your weight under control. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends that you get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination or moderate and vigorous activity. Aim to do muscle-strengthening exercises at least two days a week. Limit alcohol. Even if you're healthy, alcohol can raise your blood pressure. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. Don't smoke. Tobacco injures blood vessel walls and speeds up the process of hardening of the arteries. If you smoke, ask your doctor to help you quit. Manage stress. Reduce stress as much as possible. Practice healthy coping techniques, such as muscle relaxation, deep breathing or meditation. Getting regular physical activity and plenty of sleep can help, too. Monitor your blood pressure at home. Home blood pressure monitoring can help you keep closer tabs on your blood pressure, show if medication is working, and even alert you and your doctor to potential complications. Home blood pressure monitoring isn't a substitute for visits to your doctor, and home blood pressure monitors may have some limitations. Even if you get normal readings, don't stop or change your medications or alter your diet without talking to your doctor first. If your blood pressure is under control, you may be able to make fewer visits to your doctor if you monitor your blood pressure at home. Practice relaxation or slow, deep breathing. Practice taking deep, slow breaths to help relax. There are some devices available that promote slow, deep breathing. However, it's questionable whether these devices have a significant effect on lowering your blood pressure.

High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. Garlic,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . take cap. ecosprin gold-10 at night.

Hi it looks as if you did crash diet due to which these problems have started. Start healing yourself naturally now. No more dieting. 1. Start taking 3-4 fruits everyday. 2. Drink a glass of lemon water in morning and evening. 3. Eat more vegetables. 4. Take 20 almonds everyday. 5. Eat meals/ small snack every 3 hours. 6. Never stay hungry. 7. Eat proteins like a cup of dal, lobia, dried peas, rajma with every meal. 8. Take curds/ paneer regularly. 9. One cup coffee everyday. Do 30 mins of active exercise/dance/aerobics everyday. All your problems like hair fall/ low bp will get resolved slowly. Do for one month and report back for consultation in case you want to follow up.

You are a little young for hypertension. Maybe, there is a cause which could be corrected. You need further tests: Color doppler imaging of renal arteries. Check for Aortic Co- arct. Check endocrine diseases. See a, Endocrinologist. Show him my opinion.

Dietary and other lifestyle changes can help you control and prevent high blood pressure. Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm hg. This eating plan is known as the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (dash) diet. Get plenty of potassium, which can help prevent and control high blood pressure. Eat less saturated fat and total fat. If you're overweight, losing even 3 kgs can lower your blood pressure. Strive for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Plenty of fluids orally. I suggest brisk walking for 40 mins, 5 days a week. Remain stress free as much as possible. Take your medicines regularly.

MBBS
General Physician,
How can we prevent heart attack and what precautions we have to take to avoid heart attack?
Dear in your age just need not worry of heart attack, don't get phobia, unless a very strong history in family, or any underlying known disease to develop heart attack. To prevent it -good balanced diet, regular physical fittness, stress free, fear free, controlled weight, no smoking, be positive confident, bold, smiling personality yearly check up of bp, blood sugar, lipids, is enough. My dear enjoy life with family, friends.

I am male, 74 years, 62 kg. Was told that there was 'murmur' in heart during routine checkup 12 years ago. 'Echo gram' then indicated 'mild' prolapse of Mitral valve. Four years later, echo indicated moderate MVP. One month ago, echo reveals moderate to severe eccentric jet mitral regurgitation, anterior and posterior mitral leaflet appear thickened, healed vegetation attached to anterior mitral leaflet? Flail posterior mitral leaflet? Mitral annular calcification, Aortic valve sclerosis, trivial aortic regurgitation, no significant aortic stenosis, trivial tricuspid regurgitation, no significant pulmonary arterial hypertension. Normal BP and lipid profile. Not diabetic. No symptoms till recently. However, now feel slightly breathless when I take stairs for 2 floors or when I walk for more than 1 km or do anything strenuous. What is prognosis? Is there medication for this condition. Would prefer to avoid surgery for valve repair or replacement. Your advice. Am on Ecosprin 75, Dynapres 0.4 and 5 mg Atorva only.

Dear Lybrateuser, - Since you have symptoms of breathlessness, it indicates that your problem has deteriorated over a period of time - the valvular defects which impede the effective closure & opening of valves may require surgery - take the advise of your cardiologist as corrective treatment given will improve your life quality & you will be able to perform your regular daily activities easily.

Dear Lybrateuser, - At your age your chest pain could be due to acidity, anxiety or sedentary habit - avoid spicy, fried & junk foods, restrict intake of tea/ coffee to 1-2 cups per day, also avoid alcohol & tobacco if you take - do not skip meals, have meals on time, chew your food well, have 4-5 small meals rather than three large meals, do not lye down for about an hour after meals, have dinner 2-3 hrs before bedtime - have 7-8 glasses of water for proper digestion - do regular exercise, play games, also do yoga, deep breathing & meditation for 10-15 min daily morning - take syrup Gelucil, 2 teaspoonful three times a day half an hour after meals.

I am 65 years old and suffered a Heart Attack 3 years back. I am on medication for the same (Ecosprin 75, Novastat - CV 10/75, Nebicard 2.5, Ativan 2 mg along with Pantocid once a day. Due to Acid Reflux problem, ecosprin 75 was stopped9 since last one year), and was advised to undergo Endoscopy test. I had undergone the test and diagnosed with Lax Cardia. I have been prescribed with Pantocid 40 twice a day since then. I have read in your Advisory tips, as well as advices from other doctors that prolonged use of PPI is very harmful. But, in my case I have to take it continuously. What should I do?

You are right , prolonged use of PPI does carry risk(s). use kitchen remedies like ginger, garlic, ajwain, jeera, heeng, flax seed ground well. modify eating habits. take warm water in the form of green tea/clear soups/diluted milk/normal tea /plain warm water every 2 hours so that acid does not get collected and is washed further with warm nourishing liquids. continue other medicines given after heart attack. aspirin is a blood thinner and is not the only reason for acidity or stomach ulcers as feared. diet is more important than PPI prevention for acidity symptoms.
