Why There Is A Need To Consult Pediatrician For Your Child?

Fellowship In Neonatology, MRCPCH(UK), Diploma In Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
Why There Is A Need To Consult Pediatrician For Your Child?

Your child needs complete care whether it is emotional, psychological or physical. A thorough evaluation of your child's body and mind is vital at nascent stages. Childs growth should also be checked regularly and monitored. Weight, height and head circumference should be checked and plotted in standard recommended graphs to see if these are normal otherwise timely action can be taken. Childhood vaccinations should be given at right time. These are advised by Paediatrician. If you observe any complaints by your little one that may require medical help, such as:

1. Frequent headaches
Much like adults, children too can experience headaches that last from 30 minutes to 3 hours. A range of primary or secondary headaches like, migraine, meningitis, sinusitis or tension may affect children due to neurological issues.

2. Blurry vision
If you observe either a vision developmental delay or near-sightedness and farsightedness in your child, it might be related to neurological issues.

3. Slurred Speech
If your child is 7-8 months and is not responding to sounds or cannot babble non-sense words, it calls for a neurological check-up.

4. Motor and Co-ordination Delay
Sometimes babies are unable to perform motor skill activities like crawling, walking or using fingers to grip or hold, such delay requires attention of the parent.

5. Fatigue
Check if your kid has become lazy and decreased his physical activities due to fatigue and tiredness suddenly of late.

6. Abnormal Movements
Common involuntary movements or tics like eye blinking, twitching of nose, grimacing or making sounds is in some cases overlooked. Tourette syndrome is an example of such a tic, which has been evaluated as a neurological issue.

7. Tremors or Seizures
Children are prone to febrile seizures (fits) or tremors along with fever that occur between 6 months and 5 years. These are signs of neurological issues that require an immediate check-up.

8. Numbness in Limbs
Neurological complications in your child’s infancy may also cause joint pain and numbness of arms and legs.

9. Behavioural disorders
A change in behaviour or attitude in your child is noticed if he/she is suffering from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, school problems, sleep issues, intellectual disability or other neural conditions.

10. Weakness
This symptom is tricky in children, as it may be confused with general tiredness by your human eye. It may be unheard of but many children face trouble in performing easy tasks. A neurological exam may identify the source for treatments.

An underlying problem to the nervous system can cause harm or impairment in the normal growth and development of your kid. Early diagnosis helps in correct care, recovery and prevention of long-term problems. You can opt for a routine neurological examination if you find such symptoms in your child. These exams check the functioning of your child’s brain, spinal cord, nerves that come from the brain and spinal cord and offers accurate diagnosis.

2 years 3 months is too young to diagnose hyperactivity disorder. There is a broad range of behaviour that can be considered normal at this age. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is diagnosed after the age of 7 years with detailed assessment in 2 different settings.

Your doctor has rightly advise not to force feed. If baby is normal, there is no need to force for feeding. even don't ask repeatedly for feed. it is reasonable to ask only once at meal time. leave her to choose item of her choice whenever n what ever she wants.

Diabetes - How Proper Nutrition Can Help You Combat It?

Diploma in Diet and Nutrition

Diabetes - How Proper Nutrition Can Help You Combat It?

There are many myths about diabetes, especially related to what you can eat and what you can’t. Lots of people think that diabetics shouldn’t eat sweets at all. This is not true. Similarly, all carbs and fats are not bad. A high protein diet is also not required and there are no special diabetic meals. So, what should you as a diabetic, eat to combat diabetes? Read on to find out:

  1. Low glycemic index foods: Complex carbs are best for you as they limit the amount of sugar released into your blood stream and are digested more slowly and prevent your body from releasing too much insulin. These are also called low GI foods as well as slow-release carbs and are also high in fibre. Processed carbs like white bread, pasta, and rice, as well as sodas, packaged meals, and snacks must be junked. These are all called high glycemic index (GI) foods and spike your blood sugar.
  2. Manage sugar wisely: Diabetes doesn’t mean that you can’t eat sugar or desserts. It means you have to be smart with sugar, like
    • Take smaller servings of your favourite desserts as they are best eaten in moderation.
    • Reduce the sugar in your diet slowly rather than at once. This will give your taste buds some time to adjust, reducing sugar cravings.
    • If you want to eat dessert, hold back on carbs in a meal. Balance out meals so that you don’t eat too many carb-heavy foods.
    • Add some healthy fat to your diet, as it slows down the digestive process, which means that your blood sugar levels don’t spike as quickly.
  3. Eat sweets along with a meal and not alone: Sweets eaten alone can spike your blood sugar levels a lot.
  4. Don’t drink alcohol: Alcohol is full of calories and carbs and cocktails are loaded with sugar. Alcohol can interfere with diabetes medication and insulin, as well.
  5. Avoid junk, soft drinks, soda and juices: They are all packed with sugar.
  6. Avoid processed or packaged foods: These are loaded with hidden sugars. Eat food cooked at home.
  7. Remember high protein diets are not always good: Studies have shown that if you eat too much protein, especially animal protein, you may become insulin resistant. A healthy diet for diabetics includes protein, carbohydrates, and fats for the body to function properly.
  8. Eat more of these
    • Healthy fats found in raw nuts, olive oil, fish oils, and flax seeds.
    • Also eat more fruits and vegetables. Avoid juices.
    • Eat more high fibre cereals.
  9. And avoid foods like
    • Trans fats which means all deep-fried foods
    • Fast foods, especially cakes, pastries, and chips
    • Red meat

Remember, your overall eating patterns are very important. It’s also important to eat at regular intervals and avoid missing meals. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

Sir, I have a 8 years old son studying in grade 2, he is very impulsive, never sit and concentrate, never obey and listen, very destructive, sometimes hits back on us. He enjoy the repetitive task from where we stop. Please give me your kind suggestion.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, Post Graduate Program in Diabetology
General Physician, Delhi
Dear lybrate-user this is an issue with behavioural aspects There are specialists called child psychologist or counsellors These are not psychiatrists You need to consult them It is easier to mould the child at this stage rather than later.
