Hello, you need to visit a dentist and get an x-ray done. If the tooth can be saved, get the treatment done. If not then you will have to get it removed.

The toothache you are suffering from may be due to a variety of causes, the most common being: 1. Tooth decay 2. Tooth fracture 3. A damaged filling 4. Infected gums the most common cause is a long-standing cavity or tooth decay, which usually requires a root canal treatment (rct). The same treatment applies to a tooth fracture as well. In case of a damaged filling, there may be two possibilities: either the filling can be removed and replaced with a new one after applying a soothing base material; or if the damaged filling is placed deep near the nerves of the tooth, it may require an rct. Infected gums usually are treated with deep cleaning/scaling after which there is permanent relief from pain. I suggest that that you consult me privately on lybrate, so that I can provide more specific answers. You will be able to send across images of your aching tooth/teeth, and looking at them will help me be in a better position to solve your problem.

Can Your Toothbrush Make You Ill?

BDS, MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Advanced course in maxillofacial sugery

Can Your Toothbrush Make You Ill?

Did you know that your tooth brush could be home of over a million bacteria including the flu virus, E coli, staph and yeast fungus? But, can your tooth brush really make you fall ill? Luckily, our immune system ensures that toothbrushes do not make us ill. However, in rare cases, the bacteria on a toothbrush can get past our defenses.

The problem lies in how a toothbrush is stored. The bathroom is humid and moist making it the best place for bacteria to multiply. Storing a toothbrush near the toilet further adds to the problem. Here are a few tips to make your toothbrush healthier.

  1. Wash your hands before and after brushing. Also rinse your toothbrush well before putting toothpaste on it. Using hot water is better than cold water.
  2. Change your toothbrush every three months or whenever the bristles are worn out; whichever comes first. In addition, also change your toothbrush after recovering from any illness. If you use an electric toothbrush, change the head every 3-4 months. Children’s brushes need to be changed more often than adult’s toothbrushes.
  3. Do not share a toothbrush and avoid storing toothbrushes together. If the bristles touch each other, germs could move from one toothbrush to the other.
  4. Toothbrush caps may not be as good an idea as they seem as it traps moisture inside and does not allow the brush to dry properly. Instead, keep your brush submerged in hydrogen peroxide or any alcohol based mouthwash.
  5. Do not store your toothbrush horizontally. Your toothbrush should always be stored vertically with the brush side on top.
  6. When travelling, if you use a toothbrush cap, allow the brush to dry completely before putting the cap on.
  7. Store your toothbrush away from the toilet and away from the sink such that it cannot get contaminated form water that splashes when you wash your hands or face.
  8. If possible, store your toothbrush in your medicine cabinet.
  9. Always put the cover down before flushing the toilet. This will reduce the number of air borne bacteria that can attach themselves to your toothbrush,
  10. Along with your toothbrush also clean out your toothbrush holder regularly.
  11. Do not try sterilizing your toothbrush in a microwave. Toothbrushes are not designed to withstand extreme temperatures and hence this could damage your toothbrush.
  12. Use a mouthwash after brushing to rinse out any bacteria that may be left behind form your teeth or your toothbrush. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

Dear lybrate user, yellowing of teeth could be due to stains and plaque deposits. Consult your dentist for a professional cleaning first and then you can opt for various teeth whitening options like bleaching, laminates, veneers etc if you are not satisfied with the color of your teeth.

Hi, pain can be due to some conditions like cavities, tooth abcess, gum disease and fracture of tooth. You may have caries or enamel erosion which is causing pain from cold and hot food. Go to a dental clinic to rule out the cause of pain. After that treatment plan can be decided.

Tips for Braces Treatment

Here are some tips for braces treatment

Tips for Braces Treatment
Hi! My warm wishes to all the viewers. I’m Dr. Ankur Gupta. I’m a practicing Orthodontist in Gurgaon for the last twelve years.
Today, I’m going to talk about my branch Orthodontics, which is very commonly known as braces or wires.
This braces and wires, what are they?
This is just a treatment modality to correct the malaligned or misaligned teeth or we say the patients who are having crooked tooth or forwardly placed tooth or bugs bunny type of tooth, we can align them with this sort of braces.

In this treatment modality, it is a very slow process. We put small small attachment over the tooth surfaces and we apply very small small, little, gentle forces to align those teeth into their final and ideal position.
Due to this, process, is a very slow process, it takes around one year.

Usually, most of the patients they ask me, what is the best time to get the braces. I will say the best time would be, in the growing age of the patient. When the child is growing between ten to 15 years is the best time but now, due to the dental advancement, lot of advancement and technology, any patient can get the braces whether he’s in 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s but just his born condition should be good.

Usually there are three types of braces.
First one is the metal type of braces which I have shown you earlier also. These type of metal braces, they were the traditional, they are more visible, and usually done in children.
Then, another type is the ceramic type of braces which are slightly less visible, more smooth and comfortable.
Then, the third one are the type of braces which are called invisible braces in which the braces are put from the inside structure of the tooth.
These type of braces, they are usually , this treatment is usually taken by the patients whose job profile is like that they don’t want to show off that they are getting the braces or their social bindings like that.

In case you want to know more about these things, not only about braces or any other treatment modality, you can contact me on Lybrate, online consultation or offline consultation.
Thank you!

Hi, I am 28 yrs old, female and I have a pain in my left gum (mouth) for last 1 months. What should I do.
Hello. Hi lybrate-user, pain may be due different reasons like due to deposits that spread infection to the gums, or due to pus formation at that site or due food accumulation. You actually need to consult a doctor nearby and get your oral prophylaxis done and follow the treatment accordingly. Be happy:)

Dental Health Tip

Saving a fallen tooth can be useful. Try to keep it in place while you seek immediate medical attention. If that is not the case, try wrapping the tooth in a piece of plastic or soaking it in to milk and call for immediate dental service.

Dear lybrate-user. I can understand. Mouth ulcers are painful sores that appear in the mouth. Although they're uncomfortable, they’re usually harmless and most clear up by themselves within a week or two. Mouth ulcers are common and can usually be managed at home, without seeing your dentist or GP. Visit your pharmacist first, unless your ulcer has lasted longer than three weeks. Things you can do to speed up healing include: applying a protective paste recommended by your pharmacist using a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth using a toothpaste that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as this may be irritating avoiding hard, spicy, salty, acidic or hot food and drink until the ulcer heals using a straw to drink cool drinks avoiding things that may be triggering your mouth ulcers Take care.

Although its an ancient practice, its not medically recommended. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

Your teeth are sensitive. Avoid citrus fruits like oranges, lemon etc. and use sensitive tooth paste. Apply and leave for 2-3 mins on tooth brush then gentle brushing and slowly slowly you will be fine.
