You have not mentioned the age and weight of your mom which is very important for knee pain. I think she must have arthritis along with osteoporosis. You need to chek her bone density and consult a good orthopaedician in your town.

Paralysis - How Physiotherapy Can Help?

Paralysis - How Physiotherapy Can Help?

Paralysis can be concluded as the state when the muscles lose functioning in any part of the body. Any kind of disruption in our nerve system can be responsible enough to cause paralysis. Our central nervous system and peripheral nervous system communicate and control our senses of movement. But interruption in nerve impulses can cause weakness in muscles which leads to muscle paralysis.

Symptoms
A paralysed patient will encounter symptoms like:

  1. Decreasing the motor power
  2. Decreasing vasomotor control
  3. Loss of sensation
  4. Decreasing bowel and bladder control
  5. Losing the ability of sexual function.

When it comes to treating a paralysis patient, physiotherapy is proven to be the best remedy. Physiotherapy has thoroughly helped patients with paralysis in getting to feel confident and independent. Physiotherapy includes various exercises and techniques which are developed with time in order to provide a complete rehabilitation to the patients.

Types of paralysis:
There are mainly four types of paralysis

  1. Monoplegia: when one limb gets paralysed
  2. Hemiplegia: when arm and leg of a single side get paralysed
  3. Paraplegia: when legs get paralysed
  4. Quadriplegia: when both sides get paralysed

Treating paralysis with physiotherapy

  1. Physiotherapy is advised to patients with any type of paralysis. It should be started soon in order to improve blood circulation in the muscles. It also helps in relaxing the stiff muscles. This treatment improves the overall health condition of the patient.
  2. Physiotherapy is also responsible for reducing any kind of swelling which takes place due to external brain injury.
  3. Physiotherapy is helpful in making the patient stable and independent.
  4. It also helps in maintaining the blood pressure.
  5. It helps to improve the respiratory system.
  6. Physiotherapy maintains the affected muscles and nerves. It provides strength to the affected muscles and works to prevent the limbs from getting deformed.
  7. One major symptom of paralysis is a loss of bladder and bowel function. Physiotherapy helps in managing the paralysed bowel and bladder.
  8. Physiotherapy involves different techniques which can be learnt from a physiotherapist in order to transfer a paralysed patient.
  9. Othorsis, canes, braces, splints are the equipment that are advised to the patient by a professional physiotherapist.
  10. Physiotherapy helps in resolving problems such as anxiety, anger, depression, denial which takes place after post-paralysis mental trauma.
  11. Physiotherapist provides safeguarding tips to the patient and his or her family in order to avoid accidents.
  12. Physiotherapy has a big role in creating the motivation in patient's mind.

Osteoporosis - How It Impact Your Oral Health?

Osteoporosis - How It Impact Your Oral Health?

Osteoporosis is an age related condition characterized by low bone density and fragile bones. Lack of calcium and vitamin D are the most common triggers of this condition. These are vital elements for healthy teeth as well. Osteoporosis has a direct relationship with oral health and can trigger a number of issues such as loss of teeth and gum and periodontal disease. The effects of osteoporosis on oral health are seen more in women than in men.

This risk increases when talking about menopausal women.

The jawbone is one of the areas which bear the brunt of osteoporosis. The loss of bone density in this area can make teeth loose and cause tooth loss. It can also affect the gum ridges that hold dentures in their place. This can result in ill fitting dentures that need to be frequently changed.

Medication for osteoporosis is also linked to dental health. In rare cases, antiresorptive medicines that are prescribed to strengthen the bones can lead to a condition known as osteonecrosis. This refers to the death of a bone due to poor blood supply. Antiresorptive medication can be administered orally or intravenously with the latter having a higher risk of triggering osteonecrosis. Though it affects the hips and shoulder bones in most cases, it can also affect the jaw bone. It is marked by pain, swelling, infection and exposed bone. Loose teeth, gum infections and numbness or heaviness of the jaw are also symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw bone.

The risk of suffering from osteonecrosis cannot be determined beforehand. Hence it is a good idea to see your dentist before or just after starting antiresorptive treatment for osteoporosis and to schedule regular checkups for the duration of your treatment. Dental problems if any should be treated before starting medication for osteoporosis. Osteonecrosis of the jaw bone is most commonly seen after undergoing a dental procedure that affects the jawbone and associated tissues such as a tooth extraction. Ideally, invasive dental procedures should be avoided if you are taking antiresoptive medicines. However, it can also occur spontaneously.

Biophosphonates are also commonly prescribed to treat osteoporosis. This type of medication slows down the breakdown of bone tissue. However, this can lead to the development of new bones. This is not a troublesome issue when it comes to bones like the hip, leg or arm bones but can be very disruptive if it affects the jawbone. This is because the jaw bone is constantly reforming and reshaping itself.

Hello Dr. I have following symptoms from may 2016
Sore thorat headache body ache mild fever weakness tiredness white ...
Dear Lybrate user, so many symptoms should motivate you to physically visit a dentist as all these serious symptoms require clinical checkup. ONLY ONLINE CONSULTATION CANNOT HELP. Your dentist would require a complete record of your medical history and all the medicines that you have been taking with/without prescription for more than a year. You haven't mentioned any of your habits too. Please consult your local dentist immediately. After a thorough examination only, the dentist can suggest you some tests or refer you to a general physician if required. It is very important for a dentist to assess the degree of problem after seeing it, only theoretical symptoms cannot help in writing tests and prescriptions.
