Dear lybrate-user, Riscon is Risperidone. It is not available as 5 mg tablet. Of course riscon increases weight. You need to do dieting and exercise to avoid weight gain. Just stopping riscon alone may not reduce your weight to 47 kg. Consult a dietician. If doctor has adviced to stop those tablets, prepare yourself for a relapse and restart the tablets.

I have a very important presentation to give in office on this Wednesday. From all my previous experiences I am pretty sure I will have an anxiety attack for sure. This presentation is very important for my career and I cannot afford to mess this one up. I read on net about beta blockers that help suppress anxiety in such stressful situations. There's this medicine by the name of Atenolol available in india. You think it can be of help? What dosage of it should I take? Please reply soon. As this is urgent.

Dear , why do you want to think and to be sure that you will have anxiety attack on wednesday. From the last time you had anxiety attack during presentation, many things changed, including your attitude. Then why apprehend? apprehension and generalization is the main problem. I suggest you to take on your problem head on, to be relieved off it. If you fear it, it will never leave you, whatever medicine you take. As an interim measure, you can have 25 grams of nuts (cashew, badam, peanuts etc) 2 hours before presentation. Chewing gum before presentation also will help you. Do not apprehend please. Then, after the presentation, contact me. I will teach you psychotherapy methods to overcome your anxiety disorder. Believe me, medicines cannot cure your anxiety disorder, but psychotherapy can. Take care.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Loosing someone dear and near causes grief. Grief leads to disappointment. Grief related disappointment manifests symptoms as in the case of depression. But disappointment symptoms are far shorter in duration than depression. These symptoms will vanish in some days or weeks. Don; t worry. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, hobbies etc could help you divert your attention. I suggest cognitive therapy. Take care.

Hi Doctor, I'm 25 years old and my body is aging fast due to the emotional stress, from past 6 months i am experiencing this emotional stress due to relationship breakup. My question is can the body be recovered from the emotional stress, if so please mention the ways to recover.

Hi Doctor,

Dear, emotional stress due to relationship breakup or any other reasons is a very tormenting experience for anyone. Its not easy to remove all the past memories which very wonderful as well as some were painful. In a relationship, we develop lot of attachment with our partner which makes it difficult to resolve breakup once that attached partner is no more with us. It feels like one of our body parts is not with us any more. This results in constant emotional pain as we don't find any other source of relief or attachment. Loss leads to experiences of being wounded. Its easy to heal physical wounds but emotional wounds generally stay with us forever. Many times we are not able to interpret the breakup and its reasons properly which results in consistent feelings of hatred and anger towards our partner and self. We keep pondering what went wrong and how we could have saved the relationship. So we may also feel lots of guilt. This makes the pain of breakup difficult to resolve. So one must understand the feelings associated with breakup and how they are causing pain to us. This requires an initiation of self-healing process. Try to focus on your feelings and see what are the most prominent ones. For example, are you feeling guilty that breakup was all your fault or do you feel anger that you have been betrayed. Try to understand what thoughts come to your mind when you think about your breakup or the thoughts that pop into your mind now and then that depress you and make you feel worse. This way you will understand how you have to heal yourself. Breakup experiences are different for everyone. You will come to know that breakup has some particularly significant effect on you which can be healed by developing self-compassion. You need to heal yourself by becoming more aware about your feelings. Distracting yourself by engaging in day to day normal activities may repress your emotions which may withdraw you from initiating new relationships. So try to make this breakup a transformative experience for you so that you may enter into a new relationship with new learning and experience. There should be no negativity left in you as a result of this experience. First gain awareness of feelings, then develop self-compassion, then see both sides of the breakup and then learn from this experience. Initial work should be of self-healing. Then look for moving further.

I want to become a civil servant, so I left my career and joined a light job to finance myself. Initially I was good in preparation but these days am unable to do so. Due to that shift job im unable to coupe up with sleep and lacking a mindset for preparation which is also making me depress. Please help.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Sleep is very important to concentration and short term memory. Are you exercising? A good work out every day will help you sleep well. Shift timings can mess up your circadian cycles to badly impact sleep. Check back and see what has disturbed your preparations recently. Go back to the conditions that suited you earlier. Do group study or attend some tutorials, especially if the exams are approaching shortly. You have been responsible in your plans, so I believe that you can reorganize yourself to sort out this problem.

I am studying be final year now I got problem with reading and I do the part time job as purohitya my question is lack of interest in studies what to do now.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Your lack of interest may be due to the fact that you are in the wrong course. It is possible that your academic pursuits may not hold your attention much. If you have done an aptitude test and career guidance counseling you will be able to know whether the chosen disciplines are what suits your natural skills and talents. Please do that immediately and see if you have to change your course. The other consideration is that you may be technically inclined and so you could do some technical training course. And if that appeals to you you can go for regular engineering and do less years, after you finish the technical course.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Yes. Negative thoughts are always a problem for aspiring young people. There are many methods to overcome negative thoughts. Start with these three steps. 1. Every time you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, replace the thought with a positive one. 2. If you catch yourself visualizing failure, visualize success instead. 3. If you hear yourself using negative words in your conversation, switch to positive words. After you are sure you did this for around one week, come back to me. I would provide more step by step instructions. Take care.

Dear , at this age you cannot have memory issues like amnesia. You are possibly having problem with concentration, memory and recollection. The best method to improve your concentration, memory power and recollection etc is to use your brain creatively again and again. Doing number puzzles, creative hobies like painting, games like chess etc can sharpen your brain and improve concentration. Exercise plays an important part in sharpening the brain and in many aspects of memory. Nutritious food including green vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals and pulses are beneficial. Alcohol, nicotine, drugs, coffee, red meat etc are not that good for sharpening brain and memory power. Being happy and cheerful also contributes positively. You may ask a private question to me for more information. Take care.

Sir, I am suffering from stammering. Can you suggest me what should I do for that.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Alcohol - How it Affects Your Body?

MBBS, MBA - Health Care Administration
General Physician, Gurgaon
Alcohol - How it Affects Your Body?

If you are a heavy drinker or consume alcohol regularly or frequently, you should know about the harmful effects of alcohol or how it affects your body negatively. When you drink, alcohol gets absorbed into your blood and gets distributed all over your body. Alcohol consumption may cause several physical and emotional changes, which can cause great harm to the body. There are many long-term effects of alcohol abuse, which put your health at great risk.

Here are some ways in which alcohol affects the different parts of your body:

  1. Excretory system: Excessive consumption of alcohol may cause the pancreas to produce toxic substances that interfere with its functioning. As a result, pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas is likely. This is a serious problem, capable of destroying the pancreas. Alcohol affects the liver severely. Excessive intake of alcohol may cause alcoholic hepatitis and lead to jaundice development. Chronic liver inflammation may cause severe scarring or cirrhosis. The formation of scar tissue may destroy your liver. When the liver and pancreas do not work properly, there is a risk of hypoglycemia. The damaged pancreas may cause unbalanced blood sugar levels, which is a serious concern.
  2. Central nervous system: Change in behaviour is one of the primary signs of alcohol being in your system. Alcohol travels through the body and quickly reaches your brain and other parts of the central nervous system or CNS. This may lead to slurred speech and it becomes harder for you to talk. Your overall body coordination is affected along with your balance and the ability to walk properly. Over drinking negatively affects your ability to think clearly, impulse control and your ability to form memories. Long term drinking shrinks the frontal lobes of the brain. Damage to the nervous system because of alcohol may cause pain, abnormal sensations in your limbs, and numbness.
  3. Digestive system: Alcohol also affects your digestive system in several ways. Alcohol can affect the entire digestive system starting from the mouth to the colon and a single incident of excessive drinking can wreck parts of the digestive tract.
  4. Organ damage: Alcohol abuse damages your salivary glands, which cause irritation in the tongue and month. This may result in gum disease, tooth disease or tooth decay. Ulcers in the oesophagus or food pipe, acid reflux and heartburn are other impacts. Excessive drinking may also lead to stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining.

Inflammation of the pancreas disrupts its ability to help the process of digestion and regulate effective metabolism. Damage to the digestive system from alcohol abuse can also cause diarrhoea, gas, abdominal fullness. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

Try to start your day early in the morning. Write down the things that you want to do during the day, and follow that routine. Have healthy food and on time. Have plenty of water. You need some physical exercise, like walk, jog, run, cycling, gym, yoga. Choose whatever you like and do it. This will help you in releasing your stress and when the body is tired it will help you in having a good sleep. It appears that you are having lots of tension/stress. Please try to analyse the causes and contributing factors of your stress. Try to search for best options to reduce this stress. Share your emotional burden with family and friends whom you trust. If all this does not help then talk to a counsellor who will help you in understanding and managing stress which will result in you having peace of mind and getting required sleep. All the best.
