Unfortunately some psychiatric disorders are chronic (continuous or long-term) in nature. Just like some physical conditions like diabetes (sugar) or some kind of arthritis (pain due to inflammation of joints) which can't be permanently cured but can be controlled or managed from getting worse and reducing the symptoms like pain, fever restricted mobility in case of arthritis and dizziness, deterioration of functions of other organs like kidneys, heart, eyes etc. In cases of diabetes by means of modern medicines, physiotherapy and life-style modifications. Likewise, it seems to me that you have been taking drugs for stabilizing your mood swings and other psychotic symptoms which appear to be chronic. You have to accept that you have got to live with these undesirable conditions at first which may give you an immense relaxation. On the other hand, you can improve your quality of life by making some lifestyle modifications such as working within your physical and mental capacities, going for a brisk walk everyday, attending yoga classes, expanding your social network and thereby increasing your emotional support system and more importantly making regular, periodical visit to your psychiatrist etc, don't lose hope. Certainly you can make your life for the better if you have the strong will to do.

Hello doctor! I am 22 years female. My weight is 69 kg. I am a student and my lifestyle is basically sedentary but I am trying to go for walk whenever possible. I am controlling my diet and avoiding junk. Even after all my efforts my weight is constantly increasing and I am becoming fat. My weight has become a major concern for me, recently I am very disturbed mentally as I started feeling that I no more look good. My dresses no more fit me. I am unable to wear most of the dresses as they won't fit me. Please help. I want to know is there any medicines which can decrease my weight without completely going on starvation. Please tell me if there is any medicine for weight loss without any side effects.

It all depends on our motivation and never give up attitude. No you will lose weight needed you change your thinking and attitude towards permanent natural weight loss. The major hurdle is self sympathy while following diet that we r cursing our body, feeling missing out on certain foods, etc. We should just feel that we are gifting ourselves good health and good looks....look at you after that,..a happier you... You should take a metabolism boosting diet....which includes lot of therapeutic foods like wheat grass, lemon grass, ginseng root extracts, cinnamon extracts etc. Take expert advice.

My uncle is 74 years old, and he met an road accident before 4months, and injured spinal cord t12& t14, and buttocks bone broke. Take him to hospital at mysore jss they operation for spinal cord successfully. After 1 month he discharged to home. But now he was (from 20days) not eating any thing and losing his memory, not identifying anyone. Please give me a suggestions, we are from very poor family we have not money for further treatment.

It is very common to get a mental depression after such accidents. Even for a young man, it will be difficult to accept the sudden changes in life styles such as restrictions in movements (to b bed-ridden for months), dependency on others for activities of daily living, pains associated with surgery or post-operative care, disfigurement of body, etc. Due to which he may loose hope and interest in life leading to depression causing loss of memory and changes in sleep and hunger, etc. Think of a 74-year-old man in such a situation. My suggestions are 1. He must have more social, emtional and physical supports from his family members, friends and social network than ever before in his life. 2. Since your economic status is not good, you have to find a nearest hospital or a qualified physician at your location to give symptomatic treatment for your uncle till the end.

I am very angry person. Due to small things I always get angry very suddenly. I am very emotional peron also too. I always think lot about anything. Insufficient slip.

BHMS
Homeopath, Bangalore
Hello you should try to control your anger as stress levels are high n your not satisfied with things happening in life humans tend to just brust out but only way to control is to meditate n talk to urself n try to convince urself n emotions are within every some keep at high level n some low, you just come out of all your failures or sadness try enjoying n keep urself busy reading novels, watching movies music you ll surely feel better. If you still don't feel better ask private question or consult a homoeopathic doctor n for sleeplessness never make it a habit to take medicine but for now you take homoeopathic medicine cypripedium 1m 4 times 4 days 4 pills only. Later try sleeping on own.

Dear, the condition you are mentioning her almost happens with every family. Emotion is internal change due to external stimuli. Once you understand the emotion causing stimuli and adjust according to that, your emotions will die down in the beginning itself. One or two counseling sessions should clear your problem. Please let me know if you are willing for telephonic counseling session. Take care.

Dear, the reason could be stress. Stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium. In other words, it's an omnipresent part of life. A stressful event can trigger the fight-or-flight response, causing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol to surge through the body. A little bit of stress, known as? acute stress? can be exciting? it keeps us active and alert. But long-term, or chronic stress? can have detrimental effects on health. You may not be able to control the stressors in your world, but you can alter your reaction to them. I need to know, what are the causes with which you are stressed? once you know the reason, you will be able to adjust with it with some tips and tricks. Please let me know the details. Take care.

This is quite a late age to start ocd. This may require further evaluation to rule out a neurological disorder like dementia and require investigations. An mri and few blood investigations may need to be done and accordingly medications need to be prescribed.

My son is not talkative only few words he says we went to doctor (pediatric) he just gave Mentat syrup by Himalaya. We heard so many cases around us similar to Vedant there doctor gave that some tonic and they start talking now suggest me is Mentat is okay. His class teacher told me that now he is trying to sing rhymes vd his friends.

B. Sc. Speech and Hearing
Audiologist, Delhi
You didn't mention your son's age. If your son's speech milestones are not age appropriate you should consult a speech pathologist/ therapist. Children learn speech fast in their peer group. Keep a check on your son if he is learning fast then fine otherwise don't delay much.

My son is suffering from major depression since two years and no medicine is giving benefit.what can i do?

M.Phil - Psychology
Psychologist, Chandigarh
Hi sir. Why the medicines not working whether you have been irregular or some specific reason. Along with medicine he needs to work onto his thought process and also understand his personality if its in personality might lead to slow improvement. He needs cognitive behavior therapy along with jmpr deep muscle relaxation techniques provided by a qualified clinical psychologist.

Dear, schizophrenia is a mental disorder often characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to recognize what is real. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, auditory hallucinations, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and lack of motivation. Diagnosis is based on observed behavior and the person's reported experiences. More than cure, you should concentrate on management of your problem. I need to talk to you in detail. Please post a private question to me. I will help you manage it. Take care.

I am 23 years old. I want make my father to stop smoking. Actually my father was chain smoker. I want making him stop. Please I need help. How would I make him stop?

M.Sc - Psychology
Psychologist, Chandigarh
Hi, you can try by talking to your father when both of you are calm. Explain to him how smoking is injurious to his health and how seeing him smoke affects you. Tell him how much you love him and thus you don't want him to get ill - something that smoking will eventually cause. Talk calmly and be supportive. Also, understand that smoking is like an addiction that will take time to get rid of. Encourage him to take small steps like weaning off of smoking, that is, reducing the number of cigarettes slowly over a period of time. You can also take the help of a psychologist to help your father. All the best!
