5 Ways To Beat Diabetes

PGDCC (Cardiology ), CCEBDM (Diabetes), CCGDM (Gestational Diabetes), CCMTD (Thyroid), MBBS
Cardiologist, Udaipur
5 Ways To Beat Diabetes

India has the largest number of diabetics in the world. Around 6.2 crore people in India suffer from diabetes. Many patients with diabetes in India are still undiagnosed. More than 95% of these patients have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes results from the body's ineffective use of insulin. It is usually diagnosed in the age group of 35-45. It can be prevented by healthy diet and exercise.

The patients who are diagnosed with diabetes and even those who do not have the disease can benefit by following these 5 effective ways to beat diabetes.

1. Make healthy food choices

Taking care of your diet is one of an essential components to manage and prevent diabetes.

-switch to oils with a high volume of monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats like olive oil, canola oil, soybean oil or rice bran oil. Limit intake to one tablespoon a day.

-restrict intake of foods that have a high glycemic index like white bread, white rice, fatty foods, and soda.

-consume foods with a low glycemic index like multigrain aata, whole grains, daals, most fruits, non-starchy vegetables and carrots.

-limit consumption of fast food. Studies show that young adults who ate fast food more than twice a week developed insulin resistance (a diabetes risk factor) at twice the rate of people who weren't fast food junkies.

2. Watch your weight

Losing weight can help to regulate blood sugar levels.

-if you have type 2 diabetes, losing just 4-6 kgs can lower your glucose levels.

-the way fat is distributed in the body can also impact diabetes risk and management.

-people who have abdominal adiposity (fat around the belly) are more prone to type 2 diabetes than those with fat mostly in the thighs, hips, and buttocks.

3. Exercise regularly

Regular exercise can lower blood glucose and possibly reduce the amount of medication you need to treat diabetes, or even eliminate the need for medication.

-get your doctor's approval before starting an exercise program.

-even if you do not lose any weight, exercise can help keep type 2 diabetes under control.

-start slowly with a low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming or jogging.

-exercise, at least, three times a week for about 30 to 45 minutes.

-warm up for 5 minutes before starting to exercise and cool down for 5 minutes after exercise.

-always carry a source of carbohydrate with you so you'll be ready to treat low blood glucose.

4. Manage stress better

Stress can make blood sugar levels harder to control.

-engage in any relaxation technique to ward off stress.

-the best techniques include yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises.

-you may join a yoga club nearby or else take out 10-15 minutes every day to sit quietly with yourself and practice meditation.

5. Go for regular health check-ups

Diabetes requires lifelong commitment towards following a healthy lifestyle, taking medicines on time and getting regular checkups to detect any complications.

-check your blood sugar levels at home at least once a week.

-get your hba1c levels checked at least twice a year.

-in addition, make sure that your eyes, kidneys, heart, and skin are in optimal health.

-visit an eye specialist once a year to detect any signs of eye damage (diabetic retinopathy).

-get your kidney function tests done at least 2 times a year.

-inspect your feet regularly for any signs of numbness, pain or growth that may lead to ulceration and complications.

Hello lybrate-user, there is no magic that can help to reduce the belly fat. Eating right and exercise is the only thing that helps. Being a diabetic, its necessary to manage your sugars & body weight as a priority. Increase your protein and calcium intake by including nuts, pulses, dals, dairy products, lean meats - fish and chicken, eggs (if non-vegeterian). These will help you in managing the sugars as well as solve the deficiencies.

It will be better if you give following details Fasting, PP current levels, HbA1c%, drugs being taken for diabetes with dosage, dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise. Based on those details I will be able to give some suggestions. Thanks.

I'm diabetic for the past 15 years. I get fatigue in the morning and yawn too often. What could be the reason.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

I'm diabetic for the past 15 years. I get fatigue in the morning and yawn too often. What could be the reason.
Mr. Prem kumar, if diabetes is not in control then early fatigue or tiredness occurs. Yawning is a reflection being overtly tired or having had sleeplessness. If diabetes is in good control then fasting sugar should be around 100 mg and pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c%<7. If this achieved all your symptoms will go away.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Experts recommend that lifestyle changes should be added to medication therapy when people with diabetes try to reduce their blood pressure. These changes include reduction of salt intake, weight loss, and moderately intense physical activity, like brisk walking for 30 to 45 minutes most days of the week. A study in 2002 found that 19.3 million American adults had diabetes, and it is estimated that a third of these adults are undiagnosed. Risk factors for diabetes include advancing age, obesity or being overweight, a family history of type 2 diabetes, and being a member of a minority population at increased risk. African-Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, Alaska natives, and Asians are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. It is estimated that an additional 26% of the US adult population has "pre-diabetes" and modification of some risk factors, like weight or sedentary lifestyle, may help these adults avoid development of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people have a fasting plasma glucose test for an initial screening test. A positive test is determined by a level of blood glucose of greater than 126 mg/dL. If you have a positive fasting glucose test, your doctor may want to confirm it on a separate day with a repeat test. If your test results are "borderline" you may also want to have the test repeated on a separate occasion. There are several different screening tests to determine if you are at risk of diabetes or if you have diabetes. Each test has different advantages and disadvantages. If you have hypertension, your doctor should screen you for glucose intolerance or type 2 diabetes. There is adequate evidence that people with blood pressure above 135/80 mm Hg who have diabetes discovered through a screening program will benefit from the strict blood pressure control strategies indicated for diabetic patients to reduce coronary heart disease.
The available evidence suggests that all adults with high blood pressure readings that are consistently greater than 135/80 mm Hg benefit from tighter control of risk factors associated with diabetes for prevention of coronary heart disease.

coffee is worst for diabetics

coffee is worst for diabetics
coffee is worst for diabetics:

Blended coffees

Blended coffees that are laced with syrup, sugar, whipped cream, and other toppings can have as many calories and fat grams as a milkshake, making them a poor choice for those with diabetes. A 16-ounce frappuccino at starbucks, for instance, can contain 500 calories, 98 grams of carbs, and 9 grams of fat. You may consider a treat such as this" just coffee" but the blended versions can send blood glucose soaring.

Have this instead: ask for the smaller, 12-oz light or non-fat versions, which range from 60 to 200 calories, making it a much lower-calorie, lower-sugar substitute" the lighter version won't drive blood sugars sky high, especially if you take a walk afterward" ideally, black coffee is best.

First thing you should do is to get rid off anxiety and stress as those are main offenders in many. You can try any of the following methods. You can do squeeze and stop technique. You can stimulate your partner to maximum before getting yourself stimulated. You can deviate your thought to something nonsexual when you about to near ejaculation. You can put on a condom or condom with anesthetic which will decrease the excessive stimulation on penis and there by prevent premature ejaculation. Hope this may help you.
