Sleep Apnea - How It Can Increase The Risk Of Heart Disease?

Getting a good night’s sleep is needed not only to remove dark circles but to improve your overall health as well. Ideally, adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. This helps you stay physically and mentally healthy. However, getting a good night’s sleep is easier said than done, as sleep apnea is one of the factors that could affect the quality of your sleep. This can cause a number of health issues including heart disease.

What is sleep apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder that can make your breathing start and stop repeatedly while you are asleep. These pauses can range from 5 times an hour to 30 times in one hour. Waking up tired after a long sleep and snoring are characteristic symptoms of this condition. This can be annoying for others, but for you, it could be life-threatening. When your breathing stops; your airways get blocked.

This is characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea, as every time this happens, you wake up. This can increase the risk of high blood pressure. High blood pressure, in turn, can cause arrhythmia, heart failure, and strokes. This can increase the risk of a fatal heart attack by up to 5 times.

Heart disease and central sleep apnea have a cyclic relationship. In this case, heart disease causes the person to retain water and salts. At night, this excess fluid can enter the lungs making the person wake up feeling short of breath. This is not necessarily because the airways get blocked but because the brain does not send the diaphragm a signal to expand and contract. This is not as common as obstructive sleep apnea.

Reducing your risk of heart disease caused by sleep apnea
There are ways to treat sleep apnea so as to reduce the chances of heart diseases. To treat it, it must first be diagnosed. Thus, if your roommate notices you snoring, consult a doctor immediately. For a diagnosis, you will need to undergo a sleep study. This involves staying overnight in the hospital where they will monitor your sleep. Treatment for sleep apnea is known as continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP.

This form of treatment involves wearing a mask that regulates the air pressure as you breathe thus ensuring that the air passages do not close down. In case of obstructive sleep apnea, losing weight if you are obese, can also help treat the condition and keep the airways open.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

You are getting a very good response. You should continue till it's 100% cured & after wards also for 6 to 8 wks. Actually there is no definite criteria to decide it. One thing more it's usually increases or reoccur in stress.

You don't have to worry about sex power. Worry is weakness. You need to take MRI and probably you will get cure by procedure called endoscopic discectomy which we perform at our Center. This is button hole day care surgery without stitches.

Hello. BZDs (clonazepam) is an emergency measure to control anxiety aka panic attack. You should consult a mental health professional/ psychiatrist for management of panic disorder which includes SSRIs (medicines) and psychotherapy including relaxation exercises. Thanks.

My father is 73 years old, he fainted and collapsed recently in january while morning walk and injured on back side of head due to which a minute fracture occurred and blood clotted there. After which he's taking EPTOIN-100 mg three times. But few days back he again fainted while bathing and again got an injury near the previous one. In ct scan again Clotting came. Is this are heart attacks or something else? After the ECG report a doctor told that's an attack so he wrote some tests enzyme test came negative and he told sometimes the ECG shows this kind of false signals. And in eco test everything came normal but a line also written on it "type-1 dd" doctor told its normal. Do he need more check ups? His bp also remains little down=110-113/67-73. Also he's diabetic patient.

MBBS, Dip.Cardiology, Fellowship in Clinical Cardiology(FICC), Fellowship in Echocardiology
Cardiologist, Ghaziabad
Diabetic patient at this age will definitely have some amount of cholesterol deposition in the arteries. Repeated stroke patients are also highly likely to have high cholesterol and some underlying heart disease so yes I really he should undergo CT coronary angiography if his Kidneys and other parameters are normal because it will not only tell us about the hearts blood supply but also give us evidence of cholesterol deposition by the calcium score as for the Echo report you are talking about his grade 1 diastolic dysfunction which is common for his age and does not have a major health issue.

Dear this condition is called withdrawal phase it remains for 20 to 30 days after stopping consuming alcohol. A person who consumes it in high quantity can remain present for 3 to 6 months. Better is to take anti craving drugs that will help you to control withdrawals.
