I am not able to sleep for last eight months due to stress of my child education. He is not studying and I am worried of his future. What should I do for sound sleep.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

I am not able to sleep for last eight months due to stress of my child education. He is not studying and I am worried...
Your son must be pretty old enough to be responsible about his own studies. Any amount of worrying will not help him. He has to realize and work on his issues. So let him be and just tell him to be committed to his studies. Even if he fails it may be for his own good. You will certainly sleep well if you seriously follow this advice. Now about your sleep: The lack of sleep, i.e. sleep for less than 6 hours per night, is directly linked to about 86 diseases! So let us first focus on that. In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i.e. breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques at night will be tremendously useful. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

Sir please help me I have not able to concentrate on any thing some thing always affect my psychology of the different obj.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

There may be something bothering you or stressing you. You must meet with a counselor and deal with that. With regard to concentration here are a few guidelines: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive or coconut oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that you and the family go for counseling too.

I have a habit of smoking 8 cigarettes per day. I need to stop smoking suggest me some tips. Thankyou.

Hi there ~ there are many ways in which one might want to quit smoking. Primarily if you are smoking only 8 cigarettes per day I would suggest that you fix a quit date on which you will be smoking no cigarettes at all and you may have to decrease smoking by cutting down on one cigarettes every 2-3 days or so, such that you reach your goal of no cigarettes by the quit date. I hope this helps. Although there are medications to help quit

I have smoking habbit and blood presure, how to control ?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
This is a deadly combination, seriously. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Depending on your age and medical advice you should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here?s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world ? you can start the cessation all over again. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, ?giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times?. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. All the damage you incurred earlier because of the smoking can be reverted back to normal in quick time.

Hi Doc! I'm unable to concentrate on for long times & get easily distracted, kindly suggest tips to stay focused. Thanks.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Attention–or concentration– and memory are two critical mental skills and are directly related. In fact, many memory complaints have nothing to do with the actual ability to remember things. They come from a failure to focus properly on the task at hand. Take the example of not remembering where you parked your car after shopping at the mall… It is likely that you did not pay much attention to where you parked the car in the first place, thus leaving your brain with few opportunities to register any information that could be recalled later to help you find your car. The same reasoning goes for not remembering where we put our glasses! Many of our actions are performed automatically. By opposition, focusing attention is effortful. As you know, with age the brain needs more time to process information. Along with speed of processing, other brain functions decline. A crucial one is the ability to focus and ignore distraction. As we age it thus get harder and harder to pay attention. But focusing our attention on the task at hand is key for better memory performance. What can we do then to improve concentration and memory? One general solution is to keep the brain healthy. This can be done by adhering to the main pillars of brain health and maintenance: balanced diet, physical exercise, cognitive stimulation, stress management, and social engagement. How to improve concentration Focus on the task at hand: If talking with someone: ask questions; if reading a book or a report: ask yourself how you would summarize what you just read to a friend or to your boss. In general, avoid and/or eliminate distractions. Tune out everything else. The harder the task, the more important it is to tune out distractions. Do not try to double-task, this will increase your errors and divide your attention. Attention is limited. When you try to do several things at once, you necessarily have to divide your attention and thus concentrate less on each individual tasks. Improve Concentration through Meditation Use meditation. Several studies have shown that meditation can be a good brain training tool that affects especially attentional / concentration skills. How to improve memory Pay attention and concentrate! (see above) Relate to the information you are learning. The more personal the information becomes, the easier it is to remember it. Ask yourself how it makes you feel. Ask yourself where else you have heard this. Ask yourself whether there is something in your personal life related to this piece of information. Repeat the information: Come back to it more than one time. This has been found in tons of studies: repeated information is easier to recall. Spaced retrieval (a method with which a person is cued to recall a piece of information at different intervals) is one of the rare methods that show some results with Alzheimer’s patients. Elaborate on the information: think about it. Things that are concrete and have a clear meaning are easier to remember than abstract and vague ones. Trying to attach meaning to the information you are trying to memorize will make it easier to recall later. Your brain will have more cues to look for. For instance, try to picture the information in your head. Pictures are much easier to memorize than words. To remember figures and percentages it is much easier to picture these in a graph for instance. Relate the information to something you know already. We often forget names in the few second after we have heard them. Most of the time this phenomenon can be related to a lack of attention or concentration. It is also caused by the fact that names have no specific meaning and are thus hard to memorize. Say you are introduced to Kim today: Improve your short term memory 1. Pay attention to the name: Ask Kim to repeat her name if you have not heard it very well. Make a conscious effort of trying to memorize the name: Focus on it (“Her name is Kim. I want to remember it.”) 2. Relate to the name: What does this person make you feel like? Do you know someone else named like this? Think about this other person. (“She seems quite nervous, I wonder why. She makes me feel a bit uneasy. Not at all like the other Kim I know from the gym.”) 3. Repeat the name: Use the name several times in the conversation. (“What do you think of this, Kim?”) If applicable, use the person’s business card later on to read her name over and over. 4. Elaborate on the name: Relate the name to previous information (“Kim, as in Kim Wilde I used to listen to when I was a kid. Well, she sure doesn’t look like Kim Wilde!”). Picture her face later on in the day as you repeat her name. I hope this helps

My brother is 15 years old. He is not able to speak sentences properly he has a iq of 70 but not suffering from autism or other mental disorder. Was weak in studies, but able to do calculations upto 2-3rd std. What should we do. Is he able to live normal life like marriage etc.

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Since he comes under the definition of mild mental retardation (now called general intellectual disability), he will always have limitations in his daily living. Still an I q of 70 means that he can manage most of the routine things with little assistance. You and your parents should focus on training him for self care, travel, communication and perhaps a simple vocation that he can turn into an occupation. Marriage, like any other legal contract, requires both parties (bride and groom) to fully understand the nature of the contract, at the time of the alliance. The iq by itself doesn't matter. Every person with an iq of 70 will have different levels of understanding. That is the legal angle. So he can get married. However, focus on making him as independent as possible.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

You will get a job whenever there is one suitable and available. In the meantime you must keep looking for one and you will succeed only if you try many avenues. You?re not having friends is of some concern and you need to work on that seriously. At your age you must have a whole bunch of teeming youngsters around you. May be you are an introvert. Some of us are but to leave it like that is not healthy. We are social animals, gregarious by nature and need and must want people. The final test of a personality is in the social context: what happens to you when you are with other people. To really work out this you must attend a personality development course, attend workshops, seminars, meetings, discourses, clubs, social groups etc. to meet people and to work side-by-side with them. You need to come out of your shell and mix around. This might also be the reason for your boyfriend changing: he may not feel like being with you if you are not so sociable. Please do all of these things on a war footing. If necessary get the help of a counselor too.

milk secretion can come due to various reasons even in a virgin lady. Your suspicion based on this alone is not warranted. But explain to her that ur not a medical person, as u rightly did apologize and bring her back. Find the reason for the excessive milk and get her treated. All the best

With this much information it is hard to diagnose a mental disorder. You do seem to have undergone a stressful period and lost trust on people. The symptoms that you mentioned could be due to some alternations and misunderstanding that you would have gone through. Inability to relate to your present situation could be a defense to protect yourself from apparent harm which may or may not exist. However you could be dysfunctional in this situation and unable to carry out your daily routine and achieve anything that you want to. I suggest that you see a counsellor and discuss at length about your experiences of the past and look at workable solutions.

Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Take care.

This product is used to clean stool from the intestines before surgery or certain bowel procedures (e. G. Colonoscopy, radiography), usually with other products. It may also be used for relief of constipation. However, milder products (e. G. Stool softeners, bulk-forming laxatives) should be used whenever possible for constipation. Magnesium citrate is a saline laxative that is thought to work by increasing fluid in the small intestine. It usually results in a bowel movement within 30 minutes to 3 hours.
