4 Risk Factors Of Scabies!

4 Risk Factors Of Scabies!

Scabies is a type of skin conditions that causes itching and rashes. This dermatological condition is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, a microscopic mite. It is a contagious condition, which can spread through physical contact. An estimate shows that scabies infects over 300 million people worldwide per year.

This eight legged microscopic mite creates a tunnel in the human skin and lays eggs in it. These larvae move under the surface of the skin and spread across the whole body, once hatched. Dogs, cats, and mice can also be affected by this disease. It usually takes 2-6 weeks for the symptoms to develop. Signs and symptoms of scabies involve itching, rashes, sores and thick crusts on the surface of the skin.

Some of the risk factors of scabies are:

  1. Scabies spreads through direct, prolonged skin-to-skin contact with a person who has mites.
  2. An infected person can easily pass scabies in his/her household or sexual partners. Scabies in adults is usually sexually acquired.
  3. The likelihood of scabies increases easily under crowded conditions, which involve close body and skin contact. Nursing homes, prisons, and several types of care facilities are sites of scabies outbreaks.
  4. Immunocompromised, elderly and disabled people also suffer from an increased likelihood of contracting this skin condition.

Complications of scabies include:

  1. Persistent and vigorous scratching can break the surface of your skin, which can lead to secondary bacterial infections. Impetigo, a superficial infection, is a quite common occurrence in such cases.
  2. Crusted scabies, the most severe form of scabies, can be common in certain groups. People suffering from diseases such as HIV or leukemia who have weakened immune systems as well as severely ill people have high risks of contracting this condition. This condition, also known as Norwegian scabies, is very contagious and also hard to cure.

Hair loss- When should you seek professional opinion?

Hair loss- When should you seek professional opinion?

A little hair loss is a common part of everyday life. People tend to shed old hair just as they shed flakes of dead skin; except that with hair, it just tends to be more visible. People with long hair often tend to lose quite a bit of hair on washing and showering. While it might worry those who have recently begun to grow out their hair, it is important to know that it is completely normal.

Hair loss, however, can also be a symptom of several serious issues. Not only can it be a symptom of hair loss diseases that are very difficult to recover from when not treated properly, but it can also indicate other health problems. Hair loss conditions such as Alopecia Areata can be further aggravated if not detected and treated on time. Hair loss can also often be an indicator of health problems such as malnutrition and anemia. You should seek professional advice in several cases of hair loss, such as:

  1. Patchy hair loss: If your hair is falling out in patches, it is usually a sign of a disease and not just routine hair loss. Autoimmune disorders such as Alopecia Areata might just be causing such problems in which case you should seek medical treatment in order to re-grow the hair you’ve lost.
  2. Patches of brittle and breaking hair: Hair that suddenly turns brittle in patches can be an indicator of a bigger medical issue. Diseases such as Lupus can cause hair to become brittle and break off in patches. Other serious autoimmune diseases such as HIV can also cause such hair loss and is best confronted by consulting a medical professional.
  3. Sudden and pronounced hair loss: A sudden surge in the increase of hair loss might also be an indicator of an underlying medical problem. Thinning hair is often considered an indicator of anorexia nervosa coupled with sudden weight loss. Not only is hair loss an indicator of malnutrition, but it can also be a symptom of anemia, thyroid disorders and diabetes.
  4. Rashes or uneven skin on the scalp: Irregular, irritated and uneven skin on the scalp can often indicate skin disorders that are the causes of hair loss. Ring worm, being the most common of these, requires immediate and rigorous treatment.
  5. You are pregnant or a senior citizen: Hormonal changes, such as the ones you might go through during pregnancy or menopause can cause sudden thinning of hair. In these cases, it is best to seek help from a medical professional so that they can prescribe you the necessary supplements that will not only help your hair quality but keep your overall health in check.

Ring worm or Tinea corporis is a Fungal infection which thrives in damp, humid, sweaty conditions. After proper examination and diagnosis a short course of oral and topical antifungals will definitely relieve you of your symptoms. It is advisable to treat fungal infections as it may spread and infect others in your contact. Regards

I agree as well that dark complexion is not a curse. Your skin color is genetically determined and can never be changed drastically with any treatment. Instead of getting obsessed with fair complexion, I suggest you aim for a glowing, radiant and blemish free skin. This can be achieved by maintaining a proper diet and adequate water intake, following a healthy lifestyle. Additionally certain medications, namely oral antioxidants, regular use of sunscreen and certain vitamin supplements if taken under proper guidance will definitely help to reverse the damage sun, stress, aging has caused to your skin and improve your overall appearance. Warm regards
