How can I get rid of stress, strain and pressure that had been repeatedly creating a problem for my mind.

How can I get rid of stress, strain and pressure that had been repeatedly creating a problem for my mind.
Dear Samboj, Welcome to lybrate. Stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium. In other words, it's an omnipresent part of life. A stressful event can trigger the “fight-or-flight” response, causing hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol to surge through the body. A little bit of stress, known as “acute stress,” can be exciting—it keeps us active and alert. But long-term, or “chronic stress,” can have detrimental effects on health. You may not be able to control the stressors in your world, but you can alter your reaction to them. Physical exercise, creative activities, deep breathing, being away from the situation for sometime etc can help you tackle the stress. I need to know, what are the causes with which you are stressed? Once you know the reason, you will be able to adjust with it with some psycho therapy methods. Please let me know the details. Take care.

Being Alone vs. Being Lonely

Post graduate in counselling psychology
Psychologist,
Being Alone vs. Being Lonely

There are people who feel lonely but are alone and there are those who choose to be alone but are not necessarily alone, i. E. Surrounded by people. So what make us feel lonely? is it just isolation from social life or one can be lonely in the midst of all social activities? today psychologist Shivani sadhoo answers some of the interesting facts and mind factors behind being alone and being lonely.

First understand, loneliness is a universal human emotion, yet it is both a complex and unique to each individual. It is commonly described as a state of solitude or being alone but in reality, loneliness is a state of mind. This state of mind causes people to feel empty, alone and unwanted. People who are lonely often crave human contact, but their state of mind makes it more difficult to form connections with other people. Loneliness as per psychological definition is not necessarily about staying living physically alone, instead, it is the perception of being alone and isolated that matters the most.

For example, a newly joined office employee, who has difficulty in making friends and making himself/herself noticed, might feel lonely despite being surrounded by hundreds of office mates. Similarly, if a girl or a boy finds it difficult to express his/her pain, fears, feelings through verbal expressions, i. E. By talking, he/she might feel alone among a group of friends who would be all talking about themselves and would consider this person to have no trouble in life.

Loneliness has a wide range of negative effects on both physical and mental health. Some of the health risks associated with loneliness includes:

Generally, it's very difficult to recognize if someone feels lonely and sometimes even the sufferer doesn't recognize for the whole life that he/she was lonely deep inside.

One can cure loneliness:-

  • by first identifying themselves that they suffer from loneliness.
  • by realizing themselves that loneliness is a hazardous condition and they should fix it.
  • if the person suffers from difficulties to express themselves to others, lacks effective communication skills, feels shy and stressed in social gathering then its advisable to take a help from experts like a mental health professional or a psychologist.

Could petril beta 10 be stopped gradually once anxiety disorder is cured? Or is the tablet is addictive?
It is a good medicine, does not come under addiction category. You can take it under a psychiatrist advise and follow up to be on the same. If anxiety is well controlled trial titration and stoppage can be adopted by the psychiatrist in discussion with you. All the best.

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Take care.

Psychologist,
If you are not happy with the people that you live with, that can make you unhappy, sad, angry, lonely etc. Find a counsellor, who can hear you out and help you to decide to either move out, or if you want to continue to stay there, then how can you make meaningful space for yourself and be able to feel happier in the same environment. You can't change how people talk and treat you, but you can change how you respond to them and learn ways to protect yourself emotionally and physically if needed.

My friend have a habbit of smoking. How to make him quit smoking. Is it possible to make a chain smoker a non smoker?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist,
Hello welcome here. I understand your concerns for your friend. Yes its possible to make chain smoker a nonsmoker. But the most important thing in this case is your friend's motivation to quit smoking. If the motivation is high, he can be helped to quit smoking. The withdrawal symptoms are managed by drugs like bupropion (prescription drug). Also, nicotine replacement therapies are available. These include chewing gums and patches. The patch is easy to use. It is just to be applied over a non-hairy area on body and helps in decreasing craving. If you have more queries concern me privately

Who is god? how will I feel god? I have a lot of curiosity regarding this. What will I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I am so glad that you have asked this question openly, and are seeking for an answer. I know of a lot of teenagers who are troubled by this quest and are not satisfied with the answers they get from their parents. I hope I can do some justice to your query and even if it is not adequate, continue the discussion either with me or with a spiritual person. I, myself, am a preacher and teacher of christian scriptures. We believe in god as a supernatural creature who has no beginning or ending. He is the creator of this universe and all things that exist. However, he is a spirit being. We humans, who have been specially created by him, have a physical form and a spiritual form: the physical form is temporary and the spiritual form is permanent seeking to reunite with him, eventually. Since god is a spirit being, he is not visible by sight. He is however, visible in his creation: the magnitude and wonder of the universe is spell bounding in its magnificence. Something only a creator could have formed and kept in an amazingly disciplined state. Every creation reflects his design and uniqueness in fantastic detail. In fact it is possible to? feel? him, if you meditate and seek him. If you open yourself just by the desire to want him, he will show himself to you in very many ways, as personal experiences. If you don? t believe anything I say, at least do this much: seek him and he will find you and reveal himself to you. Then do share with me, after you have had that experience. In the meantime, it won? t hurt to speak to spiritual teachers in your vicinity and get to read the loads of scripture materials that will further enlighten you. Your quest itself is a god-given stimulus and I can guarantee, without circumspection, that you are surely going to find him. Do not let yourself get misguided by the wrong people in this holy pursuit, though. You can pray too, as your plea to seek him.

For your dreams you need to consult a psychiatrist who does dream analysis (not all do). Do not feel guilty about masturbation, Masturbation is a very healthy form of sexual outlet, do not feel guilty about it. Nearly 99% of men and more than 60% of women masturbate. It starts from adolescence and goes on in some people even till death. The pleasure (orgasm) from masturbation is said to be unique from sexual intercourse. In men, most of the liquid contains only water and some fructose and hormones. Hence it does not drain your energy. Many equate masturbation/ seminal fluid loss to lack of energy, impotency and so on. Many quacks, religious heads and pseudo healers also propagate the idea that masturbation is a disorder/ and wrongful behavior and instill fear on the mind of innocent men and women (we can see posters in train and bus stand, offering help for this behavior). Consult a psychiatrist, if you have excessive masturbation guilt or compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation is when a person continues with frequent masturbation neglecting his/ her other work like education, job or social obligations. In fact masturbation reduces the sexual tension and helps focus on task at hand better.

Is there any medication for quitting smoking. I really want to give up but am failing. Smoke 20-30 cigarettes per day along with rajnigandha pan masala. The cigarette is classic ultra milds. Have been smoking for the past 15 years.

Dear, Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who will follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. I think one or two online counseling sessions and these therapies should help you.Take care.

General Physician,
Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40.

5 Ways To Deal With Depression!

MBBS, DPM (Psychiatry)
Psychiatrist, Thrissur
5 Ways To Deal With Depression!

Depression is more than just feeling low or down. It is a serious illness that is caused by various changes in the brain chemistry. There are a lot of factors that cause depression, which range from genetics to change in hormone level, stress, grief, medical conditions and other life circumstances. All these can lead to depression and that is something which does not go away on its own. However, there are a few efficient ways through which patients can deal with depression. These are as follows:

  1. Exercise: Taking a brisk walk for fifteen to twenty minutes every day can be very healthy, not only for your body,  but also for your mental health as well. Dancing, jogging, cycling and yoga are alternatives as well. Although, people who are depressed might not feel like doing any of those things, but one should try to do them anyway. Once a person gets into the exercising routine, they will start noticing the change in their mood. Deep breathing, yoga exercises and meditation can also help people feel better and less depressed.
  2. Anti-depressants: Three brain chemicals that are responsible for handling your mood are norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. During depression, the brain circuits that make use of these chemicals stop working properly. In this case, antidepressants can be very useful. These tweak the chemicals that run through the brain and help improve your overall mood.
  3. PsychotherapyIt is a method through which therapists find out a person’s everyday stressors. This therapy is a powerful treatment for depression. Combining psychotherapy with medications can be even better and more effective. This also makes the symptoms easier to take. When a person talks about his feelings and problems with a stranger, it can help him or her release certain amount of stress.
  4. Social support: Talking to a friend or attending group therapies has proven to be beneficial. However, it is important that the person you talk to is someone who you will feel comfortable around. Therefore, it could be someone you know or someone who empathises with you. This is possible either with your close ones or group therapies where the people you talk with, have been going through the same problem you have.
  5. Meditation: Calmness and meditation can help you channelize your positive energy and thoughts over the negative ones. It can help a person see new perspective, develop forgiveness and compassion. Much like exercise, meditating briefly can help you gain immediate effects. It helps a person get over depression. This happens over time. One might not be successful in releasing their stress at once. It is a process that takes time.

The treatment that you get for your depression will depend on the kind of depression that you have. Some might get psychotherapy while others might get antidepressants or for some, exercise could be enough.
