Is there any possibility to change a adamant chronic drunkard to quit him from drinking and smoking? He doesn't wants to work also in his life depending on his mother for drinking and food. Can he change by quiting drinking and go to a work?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Of course, he can but it is ideal if the person wants to quit himself. If he is an unwilling alcoholic, then it is possible to get the rehabilitation center to come and pick him up when he is drunk but then it will require the signed permission of his mother. He should stay in the center for at least 6 months and continue outpatient treatment and as well as attend aa meetings along with his family after the discharge. If he has a relapse, don't get discouraged but do the same thing again and again until you succeed with him. If you don't he will only be stopped by death i. E. 20% of alcoholics are on skid row: death is the only thing that can stop them. Keep trying until you succeed.

I am suffering from depression last 2 months but what happens why happened Don't know n forget things.
Hi lybrate-user, sometimes there is no external reason for depression its due to neuro-chemical imbalance in brain. You should consult a psychiatrist for medication, if you tell me your symptoms in detail I would be able to screen the severity of your depression. Have more fruits in your diet- banana's, more green leafy vegetables and dry fruits, if non veg- have fish. Try to exercise daily for 30 minutes.

Dear lybrate-user it is wonderful that you care so much about your friend. I suggest you ask her to meet a counsellor as she may be penning all hopes and expectations on this particular relationship especially because of her loss. And this may take a toll on her relationship because no one person can fulfill all our needs or expectations.

There are limitations in treatment of trichotillomania. However some treatment options have helped many people reduce their hair pulling or stop entirely.--------------------------- Habit reversal training is the primary psychotherapy for trichotillomania. This type of therapy helps you learn how to recognize situations where you're likely to pull hair and how to substitute other behaviors instead. For example, you might clench your fists for a period to" freeze" the urge, or redirect your hand from your hair to your ear. Sometimes elements of other therapies may be blended with habit reversal training, including: •Cognitive therapy. This therapy can help you challenge and examine distorted beliefs you may have in relation to hair pulling. •Acceptance and commitment therapy. This therapy can help you learn to accept your hair-pulling urges without acting on them •Homoeopathic treatment Trichotillomania being a behavioural disorder can be fully treated with homoeopathic medicines but for that a complete case taking is required regarding your problem since childhood as although all patients suffering from Trichotillomania, reason is behavioural problems but no two people will have the same history of complaints and to isolate everyone, a thorough study of history of complaints, nature of patient, environmental factors, will come into play while taking history of your problem.

Your feelings of frustration, depression and feelings of life being worthless all suggest a depressive state of mind, a kind of agitated depressive disorder. It is but natural to feel helpless and have a feeling that no one would ever be able to help you out in depression. However it is my humble advise that you consult a good psychiatrist and start medications and counselling. You would certainly feel better. Take care.

You need to look back to see what went wrong the last time and learn some lessons from it. For the depression you must visit a counselor and see how serious it is and get some help for that. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. Here are some things you can do to get back your concentration and memory: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

In treatment of depression what got you better keeps you better, if an antidepressant helped you to recover from depression it is advisable not to change the antidepressant. So go back to your new psychiatrist and tell him your problem they should be able to solve it.

Hello lybrate-user, there are many reason due to which you may be sexually inactive for sometime. It may be because of low energy level, or some illness, or may be some tensions etc. Give time for yourself, at least a week or so and work on any stress or anxiety that you are facing, diet, sleep, exercise, smoking habits to be revived. Inspite of all this if you are facing the same difficulty consult a expert or do contact us.

Get intimate to combat bedroom boredom

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda,

Maintaining intimacy is very important for a married couple, so never miss a chance to get cozy with your partner. Hugs and kisses should be part of your daily routine since physical contact is also a sign of commitment. Flirting with your partner will make them feel more wanted. Be spontaneous.

I am very short tempered because of which I end up getting angry and frustrated. Such a behaviour results in hurting my loved ones. How to control this?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Guwahati
Emotions are our feelings. Sometimes we are happy & sometimes sad, sometimes angry & upset, while sometimes calm & contented. Joy, sorrow, fear, grief, anger, jealousy, love etc are normal human emotions which every individual experiences. These emotions are there in everyone, but how one reacts to the emotions vary from person to person, based on his tolerance level, coping skills, patience etc. Anger is one such emotion, which do harm if not controlled. One does not have control over his emotions, but has control over his actions. Anger is a basic emotion which every human being experiences in response to life events or situations. If out of control it may harm in aspect of career, relationships & varied aspects of life, and also brings in immense feeling of insult, frustrations, disappointment, & other negative feelings within. Try the following measures to control short tempered nature: 1)First realize & acknowledge that you have the anger outburst problem, & stay aware & cautious about it. 2)Try to understand your own emotions especially those events, situations etc that triggers your anger. Whenever you face any such situations, stay alert & calm, try to avoid it or control it. 3)When you are angry, take a short break, move away from that place if possible, have a cup of tea or coffee etc to calm your mind. 4)Whenever you are feeling angry, try to interrupt the anger cycle in the following way: a)At that moment do not talk & try to divert yourself & control your anger first. In the state of anger you may say or do things which you may regret later after you calm down. B)Try to distract your mind by visiting a favorite website, listen a song on your cell phone, do something that comforts you or daydream about an activity of choice etc. C)Use countdown to distract your mind- start counting backwards from 100 to1. D)Use physical relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercise. E)Use mental relaxation techniques like positive thinking & imagery, where you imagine anything that gives you happiness. F)Just talk to someone with whom you feel comfortable and relaxed. G)Take your anger as a humor & laugh it away. Try till your anger calms down. 5)If any person or situation is triggering your anger repeatedly talk to the concerned person when you are in a calm & relaxed state of mind, or work on solving the situation. 6)Work on increasing the calmness of your mind, so that you do not break down easily in any situation. For that do physical activities like regular exercise, yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercise daily. Sleep adequately & maintain a healthy lifestyle. 7)Avoid substance of abuse like alcohol, cannabis etc, as these substances reduces frustration tolerance & makes the mind restless easily. 8)Try to be good listener & develop good communication skills, as proper communication solves many problems. 9)Learn to assert yourself, express your feelings calmly & directly, without becoming hostile & defensive. 10)Do not try to suppress your anger, but try to solve it. As suppressing anger leads to anxiety, depression, & other detrimental effects on the body within. If after trying above also you are not able to control your anger, then seek professional help. Consult a Psychiatrist who will evaluate you & advice you medicines or counseling sessions accordingly. All the best.
