I am suffering from social anxiety disorder. I got to know it some 3 years back. But I forgot about it from time to time. But now I can not take it out of my mind. I feel anxiety while using my hands for doing something specially holding cup of tea. I rehearse things in mind before doing and fail in mind and in real also. I saw a doctor one month ago. He prescribed me Ciplar LA 40mg. That helped a little for a few days but again it is not working. I have started doing yoga and meditation for a month but not much success yet.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Social anxiety disorder treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured. The process is a bit lengthy and could take any period between one year to 2 years according to the depth of the anxiety problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Keep the period of treatment in mind, prepare yourself to take up the treatment and consult a psychologist. Take care.

You may have to examine both your study habits and how you answer at exams. I will give you some guidelines for the former but you need to check out the latter with a colleague, teacher, or tuition guide so that they may know your habits and give you more specific instructions. Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

How To Get Relief From Mental Illnesses?

Diploma in Psychological Medicine, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Ludhiana
How To Get Relief From Mental Illnesses?

Mental illnesses refer to an extended range of health disorders related to the mental condition of an individual which affect the health, mood and behavior of that person. Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, addictive behaviors, schizophrenia, etc. are the different types of mental illnesses.
Mental illnesses can create a lot of trouble in the normal functioning of the day-to-day activities of a person's life. Here are some of the common treatment options available for relieving mental illnesses.

  1. Medications:  Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood-stabilizing medications, antipsychotic medications are some general types of psychiatric medications prescribed by the doctor, which can be consumed depending on the condition one is going through. Although these medications do not cure the person completely, it helps in improving the condition.
  2. Psychotherapy: This type of therapy involves talking to a mental health provider about your condition and other related issues. In other words, it is also called talk therapy. It helps a person to cope up with his/her stress. The duration of such a treatment varies. It may either take a few months or even longer, if required. This therapy can be carried out in a group, with family members or even face to face with the therapist.
  3. Brain-stimulation treatments: When the medications and psychotherapies fail to work in treating mental illness, this treatment is applied. It involves procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation and vagus nerve stimulation.
  4. Hospital and residential treatment programs: In extreme cases of mental illness when a person becomes a threat to himself/herself, it is recommended that he/she be hospitalized to a psychiatric hospital.
  5. Substance abuse treatments: Substance abuse and mental illness go hand in hand. It worsens the condition of mental illness in an individual, if he/she cannot restrict the consumption of alcohol or drugs. In such circumstances, an individual needs to talk to the doctor regarding the treatment options for stopping substance abuse. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Hi doctor. I am suffering from anxiety disorder. Public speaking phobia. Can you help me out to overcome this disorder.

Hi doctor.
I am suffering from anxiety disorder. Public speaking phobia.
Can you help me out to overcome this disorder.
You must go for counseling soon. Counseling will help in training you will skills and techniques to cope with the daily challenges in life and will give you a fair chance to manage your life. You must also develop your constitution to make it fit enough to cope with fear, felt many times unnecessarily. You may be taking normal fear and converting it into abnormal fear like anxiety and so on. Take care of the following: Mental stability can be achieved by learning a few skills in handling emotions in an appropriate manner. Stress management skills, which have a lot to do with expressing emotions, will need to be a major part of your recovery program. Emotionally you need the help of a counselor and that will help you tremendously to move from anxiety to normal fear. Please persevere and cooperate through all the support you need and you will come through successfully. Develop your body?s health by physical fitness through exercise, good rest (sleep), and a proper diet. Any way what you need to focus on is to do vigorous exercise of the aerobic kind for the heart?s fitness; meditation for the brain?s fitness; sleep for a well rested mind and body; a sound spiritual well being for good confidence and stability; and a diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Vigorous exercise, especially of the callisthenic kind, will make your heart, which is a muscle, grow larger; and then your heart will need to beat less often and you will respond to the anxiety with a calmer disposition. If your mind, constitution, and your emotions are in check and fit, you will never be disturbed again. The earlier you tackle this, the easier it is going to be. As regards public speaking, you are not alone: this is the world?s number one fear. Here are a few tips that are not exhaustive enough to elaborate in this forum: A few minutes before you start your heart beat can speed up from a normal rate of 70 beats per minute up to a high of 140.When you actually start; it shoots up further to 190 beats. Here's the good news: this lasts only 30-60 seconds before it progressively starts to decline. Since this is the situation, you can take two measures: To slow your heart beat breathe deep and slow into your diaphragm, it utilizes an extra 80% of your lungs to absorb more oxygen. The heart beats faster due to more oxygen requirement and slow breathing also reduces stress. Since the first 60 seconds are so important to your fear syndrome plan a good opening few lines and practice it well!

Masturbation once in a week or twice a week is not harmful. But try to control your desire to do it. As such there are no scientific back up for bad things about it.

Depression comes under the head mental disorders. You must be able to distinguish between mental disease and mental disorder. Your problem is a mental disorder. Not a mental disease. Therefore no medicines are required. Mental disorder can be successfully treated with the help of awareness, meditation, psychotherapy techniques, life style changes etc. Please post a private question to me with every detail. I will help you. Take care.

My brother imagine a story and he is telling tht this story is real nd day by day telling a new story his brain is not stable so wat 2 do

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I think that your brother may be suffering from the early stages of psychosis (if this is a recent development), and needs the urgent intervention of a psychiatrist. He will tend to make-up situations and then feel compelled to believe or assume them to be real. He may be gradually getting disconnected from reality. I, myself, am presuming this from the limited information you have given. Ideally you should take him to a psychiatrist soon for an assessment and some medical intervention as the doctor feels fit. Along with the medical advice he will need to seek parallel therapy, so seek the help of a counselor is advised too. The combination of medicine and counseling will help him stabilize and lead a normal life. Otherwise his condition may deteriorate and it may become very difficult to alleviate later on.

Dear lybrate user. Your symptoms are suggestive of you being in depression. A person when in major depression has low neurotransmitters like serotonin in brain and thus is very difficult for him to motivate himself. He has a negative attribution style for almost everything around him which is similar to what you are having. Easy irritability or irritability on minor provocation leading to anger outbursts as in your case is a part of depression. Due to negative attribution and easy irritability social interactions get limited as is your problem. You are not anti-social as the term is justified for people who take undue advantage of others around and go beyond the legal and social norms to benefit self. I would suggest you to consult a psychiatrist and get started on medications as soon as possible. Gradually over time cbt and other life changes may be brought about. With medications you will start feeling better by say 10 to 15 days from the start. I hope you take the step in right directions and get better soon. Take care.

Stress - 5 Effective Ways To Manage It!

Stress - 5 Effective Ways To Manage It!

Stress happens when the demands placed on you are too much and cause a burden on you, for example, work, school or relationships surpass your capacity or ability to adapt. Sometimes stress can be a little beneficial in the form of a support that gives the drive to some people to get their work done on time and meet due dates and deadline. However, an extraordinary measure of stress can create health and well-being issues. They can lead to problems in cardiovascular and central nervous systems and take a serious emotional problem.

Untreated and chronic stress can bring about serious health conditions including tension, sleeping disorder, muscle pain, hypertension and a weak immune system. Stress can fuel other diseases and disorders, for example, heart diseases, depression and obesity most of the times. By discovering positive, healthy and solid ways to oversee stress as it happens, a significant number of these negative wellbeing outcomes can be decreased. Here are five effective ways to manage stress:

  1. Take a break from the stress: It might appear to be hard to divert yourself from a major work schedule. However, when you give yourself consent to step away from it, you let yourself have sufficient energy to accomplish something else, which can help you have another viewpoint or practice methods to feel less stressed. It is critical not to ignore the stress factor. However, even twenty minutes to yourself is useful.
  2. Workout: Exercise benefits your emotions and brain along with your body. We continue finding out about the long term advantages of a normal exercise schedule. In any case, even a ten or fifteen-minute walk, run, swim or yoga session during an unpleasant time can give a quick impact that can keep you going for a few hours.
  3. Laugh and try to stay happy: Our brains are interconnected with our feelings and outward appearances. When individuals are stressed, its shows up on their face. So laughter can alleviate some of that pressure and enhance the circumstance.
  4. Get social backing: Try to call a friend or send an email to someone regarding your problems. When you impart your worries or sentiments to someone else, it helps calm the stress. In any case, it is critical that the individual whom you converse with is somebody whom you trust and someone who can understand and accept you. In case that your family is the stressor, for instance, it may not ease your stress in which case, you may need a friend.
  5. Meditate: Meditation and prayer can help the brain and body to unwind and concentrate properly. It can help people see new points of view, create self-sympathy and forgiveness. While practising meditation, individuals can discharge feelings that may have been bringing about physical pain. Much like a workout, research has demonstrated that practising meditation can prove to be very helpful. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychologist.

I am experiencing chest pain, discomfort on left side (front and back chest, and left upper arm). So far, doctors have performed Echo (clear, no issues indicated), TMT (when the technician stopped it, it showed Max HR 152 bpm 83% of max predicted 179 bpm. Max BP 160/100. Remarks say -" Good effort tolerance. No Angina or Arrhythmia. No Significant ST-T changes found), Endoscopy (didn't show any ulcers or any issues, normal mucosa), and Ultrasound scan of abdomen (only issue as per report is Fatty Liver measuring 17.5 cms). However, I have been to emergency room 4 times during last 1 month due to chest pain, sweating, etc. Everytime, they did ECG and Troponin tests and then sent me home after giving Pantoprazole injection. Doctor says I don't have any heart related condition. According to him, I have" Non-ulcer Dyspepsia" that is being worsened by my anxiety and panic. He has suggested - Pantodac DSR (twice a day), Atorvastatin 10 mg (at night), and Alprazolam 0.25 (at night). My cardiologist says that since TMT and Echo were normal, there is no possibility of a heart attack. I asked him whether I should undergo any further tests like CT Angiography to rule out any blockages etc. He told me very clearly that I am panicking for no reason and I should consult a psychiatrist. He says that my pain is result of anxiety and panic. I tried explaining to him that I do get anxiety and panic but it happens after I get chest pain, sweating, and breathlessness. What to do now? Should I consult another cardiologist? Is a clear TMT indicator that there is no risk of a heart attack? Is a clear Echo indicator that there are no other heart issues?

Dear lybrate user, -you have undergone most of the tests & since they were normal the cardiologist has not advised further testing so do not panic & take the prescribed medicines, sometimes acidity also causes similar symptoms. -engage yourself in various activities like walking for 20-30 min daily, yoga, meditation & other day to day activities. -avoid spicy & fried food -give sometime to the medicines to take effect -if you donot find any improvement then go for a second opinion.

Doctor, I will get sudden angry like killing them, please suggest me to be cool forever plz.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Anger management: 10 tips to tame your temper Keeping your temper I n check can be challenging. Use simple anger management tips — from taking a timeout to— to stay in control. Start by considering these 10 anger management tips. 1. Think before you speak In the heat of the moment, it's easy to say something you'll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything — and allow others involved in the situation to do the same. 2. Once you're calm, express your anger As soon as you're thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but nonconfrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them. 3. Get some exercise Physical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend some time doing other enjoyable physical activities. 4. Take a timeout Timeouts aren't just for kids. Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what's ahead without getting irritated or angry. 5. Identify possible solutions Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child's messy room drive you crazy? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner every night? Schedule meals later in the evening — or agree to eat on your own a few times a week. Remind yourself that anger won't fix anything and might only make it worse. 6. Stick with'I' statements To avoid criticizing or placing blame — which might only increase tension — use" I" statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example, say" I'm upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes, instead of" You never do any housework. 7. Don't hold a grudge Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the situation. It's unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all times. 8. Use humour to release tension Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humor to help you face what's making you angry and, possibly, any unrealistic expectations you have for how things should go. Avoid sarcasm, though — it can hurt feelings and make things worse. 9. Practice relaxation skills When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practice deep-breathing exercises, imagine a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase, such as" Take it easy. You might also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yoga poses — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation. 10. Know when to seek help Learning to control anger is a challenge for everyone at times. Consider seeking help for anger issues if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts those around you.

Is hypertension also be considered as a cause unhealthy heart. If a patient is having BP with 130/90 or even slightly higher, is it a must to take a drug and if so, what is the drug of choice and dosage recommended?

Is hypertension also be considered as a cause unhealthy heart. If a patient is having BP with 130/90 or even slightly...
Hypertension is defintly a cause of unhealthy heart. Usually the blood pressure is considered as 120/80 plus or minus 20. But it cannot be generalised. This normal value is taken by law of averages. Fact is the blood pressure or so called normal values ranges from persons to person and it cannot be treated by considering this law of averages. Moreover it is modified by different factors such as age, sex, timings, exertion, mental state, etc. You can listen to Dr. B m hegde the renowned cardiologist in who says gandhilji had blood pressure of 220/110 and it was normal for him and he died of gunshot not by stroke. So if the person has any symptoms associated with this pressure he needs treatment. Otherwise no. Moreover as per homoeopathy blood pressure rises not without any cause. And this cause is depending on the sensitivity of a person and this sensitivity and proneness to hypertension has to be treated for a permanent cure. Otherwise he will become a slave of antihypertensives which only suppresses the blood pressure never cures it.

Dear lybrate-user. I can understand. Smoking cigarettes can cause cancer and many other respiratory problems and physical and mental health problems in the long run. Your boy friend must be relatively new to smoking. Therefore you can easily motivate him to quit smoking. I also suggest online deaddiction counselling for him. Take care.

If you are doing cleaning frequently but still your teeth are yellow, it means they are reflecting the color of dentine (inner layer). It can be due loss of enamel (outer most covering of tooth) or thick dentine. About your second problem i. E. Tartar deposition. You may more calcium in your saliva because of which tartar deposition is more faster than the other people. For that thing you can use any anti-tartar tooth paste. E. G. X-tar.
