Often newborns have various skin pigmentation which clear up as they grow older. Skin colour is mostly genetic and can to some extent be brightened by healthy diet, good skin care routine, and sun protection. It is not advisable to use skin brightening agents (chemical or natural) at this age. The newborn skin is sensitive and should only have hypoallergenic baby safe products used. Dermadew/nmf are good baby safe skin care products which will improve quality of skin. Don't worry about skin colour. A healthy skin is a beautiful skin. Enjoy the cuddles with your baby. Hope this helps.

Hi Doctor, Why Febrile Seizure happens in children under 5. How to find is it shivering or seizure. Why it not happens in every babies when they have fever above 100f. Please reply.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Agartala
Nice query dear. To explain the cause and pathology of seizure is difficult at this moment. Seizure is such episode where baby will be unresponsive, for short like about 30- 60 sec, there will be uprolling of eyes, fixed eyes, sustained movements of hands and legs, urinating, tongue injury etc. But in shivering nothing will happen, baby will be conscious.

My baby is born premature and was in NICU for 20 days. Now she is 45 days old and unable to latch and reluctant to breast feeding inspite of all attempts. Meanwhile my milk got suppressed. One of my friend suggested that if the baby is reluctant then husband can try to suck, and hence can stimulate and pump the milk. even though this seems to be weird, is this really true and help me. Please suggest.

It is perfectly fine and helpful for husband to suck your milk and stimulate production . If you gave bottle feed to the baby it the reason for not latching. Gradually with persistent trial you can get the babay suck your milk

15 is not below the cut off for a heathy weight at 5 yrs. In addition weight is not the only criterion of a healthy child. If she is active and does not fall ill frequently you have no need to worry. Choose your favorite foods. Eating more is easier when you eat foods that you actually enjoy. Put some time and preparation into buying and planning out meals and snacks that you like, that way you should never end up not eating just because there's nothing in the house that appeals to you. Avoid off-putting odors. Foods that have particularly strong smells can be overpowering and may turn you off eating a dish completely, especially if you weren't particularly hungry to begin with. Avoid foods like tuna or stinky cheese (unless you happen to love them) or anything which has a smell that doesn't appeal to you. Remember that hot food usually has more of an aroma than cold food, so try eating more sandwiches, salads or cold cuts of meat if smells are not your thing. Use herbs and spices in cooking. On the other hand, foods that have a very pleasant or fragrant smell can be very appealing and might be just the thing to get your tummy rumbling. Try adding herbs or spices to your favorite foods to create wonderful aromas and add interest to food. You'll no longer be put off by bland and boring foods. Eat less fiber. Fiber, a nutrient found in fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods, is an essential component of any healthy diet. However, fiber-rich foods can be extremely filling, so it may be best to eat such foods only in moderation when trying to increase your appetite. It takes longer for your body to process fiber-rich foods than other types of food, which is why it's great for people who are trying to eat less while still having plenty of energy throughout the day. But if you're trying to increase your appetite, cutting back on high fiber foods such as brown rice or pasta and wholewheat cereals can help you to feel more hungry. This should only be used as a short-term solution, however, as fiber is essential for healthy and normal body function Make meal times pleasant. Eating can be a much more enjoyable experience when you put some effort into creating a pleasant atmosphere at meal times. Light some candles, put some music on, or watch your favorite TV show while eating. Also try to avoid stressful topics of conversation at the table, especially if your poor appetite is a symptom of anxiety. Exercise. Doing some light exercise can really help to stimulate your appetite. Your body is designed to crave more energy from food after burning calories, so you'll always feel hungrier after exercising. You don't need to put in a strenuous work-out at the gym for this to work, even a brisk walk outside in the fresh air half an hour before a meal can help to stimulate appetite. If you are underweight, you should avoid any form of strenuous exercise because even though you will be hungrier after working out, the food you eat will only balance out the calories you burned while exercising, which is no good if you are trying to gain weight. Leave the strenuous exercise until your appetite has improved and weight has increased. Drink enough liquids. You should aim to drink between 6 and 8 glasses of water or water-based drinks a day. Drinking a glass of water an hour before and an hour after a meal can help with digestion and ensure that there is not too much food in the stomach at any given time. However, you should avoid drinking too much water directly before or during a meal, as this can decrease your appetite and give you a false sense of fullness. FOR MEDICATION CONSULT ONLINE IN PRIVATE

Hi Doctors, I having son 3.5 years old, he pass motion since 4 days 3 to 4 times, getting heavy smell, and also last week went hospital as paediatrician opinion they gave loose motion tablet before bed time gave to him, but there is no symptom. Kindly help me.

MD Pediatric
Pediatrician, Mumbai
For young children most common cause of loose motion is rotavirus diarrhoea. Children mostly don't need antibiotics except when there is bloody / mucous diarrhoea or child has other symptoms other than loose motion. Smell doesn't signify much except that food is probably not fully digested because of low transit time. You keep child hydrated with oral rehydration solutions. If child develops fever, has decreased urine frequency, develop poor activity consult doctor immediately. Mostly loose motion if non complicated subsides on itself in approx 1 week.

Five food groups namely  cereals (like rice, wheat in any form, oats in any form ), pulses  (like any dal), vegetables, fruits and animal protein  (meat, fish, egg, milk in any form )should be present in adequate amount in the food of your baby. Basic principles of feeding are 1) it should be acceptable I. E. Kids should like eating it. 2) tolerable i.e. After  eating if baby develop abdominal distension,  vomiting, loose stool,  rash that means your baby can't tolerate the product.  3) appropriate consistency I. E. Porridge like with gradual change so that by the age of 2 normal adult foods can be given to the kids.  4) all the food groups should be present in the menu of whole day. Take her weight every month to see for weight gain.

If your child is able to sit up without support that means all is well else your child requires thorough evaluation like hormonal and nutritional abnormality.
