I am 32 years old female, I want to know what are the preventive measures that we as females need to take to be safe from breast and cervical cancer. How can we improve our lifestyles.

DNB (Oncology), M.B.B.S
Oncologist, Chennai
Hi, We are having many screening tests for breast and cervix. Healthy lifestyle including proper exercise, sleep, food helps to prevent cancer. Obesity is one for cause for breast cancer. Clinical breast examination, self Brest examination, mammogram are the screening tools for Breast. Pap smear is the screening tool for Cervical cancer. You need to be physically present for these screening procedures.

Avoid drinking water 4 hrs before sleep. Do kegel exercises. Ie contraction n relaxation of anal muscles, atleast twice a day, 25 times at once. Masturbate once a week atleast. It will definitely prevent you from surgery. Don't worry about PSA TEST and its values.

My husband is eating tobacco products very frequently what are the chances he might suffer from any sort of cancer?

DNB, MBBS

Madam, tobacco either smoking or smoke less, that is chewing, any form is harmful and nearly forty percent of cancers are associated with tobacco. Chewing tobacco not only causes oral cancers but as they get absorbed in the blood they can cause cancers of other organs.

Sir/mam, I had unprotected sex with my fiance on 2nd may. 26 april was the first day of her periods. She has a 35 day cycle. Within two hours of sex she had taken i-pill. But till today she didn't got periods. 50 days over. After 30 and 37 days of sex she checked herself by pregnancy kit at home which came negative both time. She sometimes notices the signs of periods like swollen breast and abdomen pain, back pain but didn't got periods. Is this due to that I pill? Please guide us what to do. And what if she is pregnant as we are not married . Is there any medicine to to cure this irregularity of periods. Please guide us. Thanks.

Hi Pawan definitely this period problem can be solved. however first the cause must be found out. IN your case there are 2 possibilities, pregnancy and hormonal disturbance due to Ipill. I suggest you repeat the test again but with an early morning sample of urine for accurate results. if still negative we can start with medicines to resume her periods.

And I have sometimes numbness is my left side of the stoma...
Dear sir, mouth cancers present as ulceration, over growth, bleeding, difficulty in swallowing or eating, Lymph node enlargement in neck region. For numbness you must see a neurophysician. One need to examine in person to understand what kind of numbness or swelling present, as it is not signifying any particular disease. There may be some tumours having paraneoplastic symptoms but can't relate without examination.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Symptoms, of breast cancer, manifest majorly in the following ways - a. Lump/ nodule in the breast that gets attached to the skin of the breast over time. The lump / nodule could be hard and painless with irregular edges or it could also be soft, rounded, tender and painful. B. Enlarged lymph nodes in the axilla which are palpable. C. Swelling of whole or a part of a breast. This is even if there is no distinct lump felt. D. Retraction or thickening of the nipple (s). E. Pain in the breast or nipple. F. Discharge from nipple other than breast milk. G. Irritation/ scaliness of skin over the breast. H. Redness of nipples i. Rarely, red, swollen and tender breast. To be on a safer side, once one gets to experience any of the above-mentioned, its advisable that one gets this clinically examined by her OB/ GYN right away and not delay any further. Imaging, either through mammography or MRI subsequently followed by a biopsy is always the gold standard for accurate diagnosis of breast cancer. Hope this clarifies. Take care. Sincerely

Dear the symptoms you are getting are due to dryness of the mouth, this is because of lack of mucus in the mouth which is protective layer of our mouth, and is being produced in the mouth by glands which will be helped by good and healthy blood supply to the glands, blood with good blood cells will take oxygen to the gland and gland works, they require oxygen in ample of amount, so if you do not take iron diet on daily basis than this will lead to less of mucus production and hence lead to dryness and thick mucus problem, this thick mucus leads to irritation in mouth hence leads to itching in the mouth, start taking good iron diet on daily basis, and shakes, avoid salty and spicy food.

What are the symptoms of cancer and how to identify whether cancer is there are not?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer presents as uncontrolled proliferation of cells leading to symptoms like palpable lump, ulceration, abnormal bleeding from anywhere, weight loss, difficulty in swallowing, change in voice, change in bowelor bladder habits, throat pain etc. One has to go for complete examination of body for any obvious lesion, some radiological investigations like chest xray, ultrasound abdomen etc, blood investigation for cancer markers and routine urine and stool examination. If any specific symptoms are there then specific tests may be done, otherwise routine screening should be done atleast annually.

Cervical Cancer Prevention & Early Detection

PG Diploma in Geriatric Medicine, MD - Community Medicine (pgt), Certificate in Infectious diseases, MBBS
General Physician,
Cervical Cancer Prevention & Early Detection

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease and, if detected early, a cancer that can be successfully treated. Below are ways to prevent cervical cancer and detect the disease early.

Cervical Cancer Prevention

Avoid infection with HPV by practicing safer sex.
(Condoms can’t give complete protection against HPV because the virus can infect areas that aren’t covered by a condom.)
Don’t smoke, or, if you do smoke, quit.

Cervical Cancer Early Detection

All women should begin cervical cancer testing at age 21. Women aged 21 to 29 should receive a Pap test every 3 years. HPV testing should not be used for screening in this age group unless used as a follow-up for an abnormal Pap test.
Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a Pap test plus an HPV test every 5 years. This is the preferred approach, but it is also OK to have a Pap test alone every 3 years.
Women at high risk, exposed to DES before birth or with a weakened immune system may need to be screened more often.

Talk with your health care professional about the HPV vaccine.

The HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that are most likely to cause cancer. It’s most effective if a person is vaccinated before becoming sexually active. The vaccine is recommended for girls who are age 11 to 12. Girls may also be vaccinated at age 9 or 10. Girls may get a “catch-up” vaccine up to age 18. Young women age 19 to 26 who have never been vaccinated may also get the vaccine.
Women over age 65 who have had regular cervical cancer testing with normal results should not be tested for cervical cancer. Women with a history of serious cervical pre-cancer should continue to be tested for at least 20 years after that diagnosis, even if testing continues past age 65.
Women who have had a hysterectomy should stop screening unless the surgery was done as a treatment for cervical cancer or pre-cancer. Women who have had a hysterectomy that left behind the cervix should continue to follow the guidelines above.

- do consult for further info on HPV vaccine

Lymphedema or swelling of the limb because of collection of fluid or lymph is a common sequelae of breast surgery. The best treatment for it is to wear a pressure garment and to have sessions of lymphapress with a physiotherapist.

Im 17 and I sometimes have sharp needle pains in my either right and left nipples alternatively is that a sign of breast cancer?

BHMS
Homeopath, Anand
No only pain in nipples couldn't be the symptom of cancer. Moreover you are too young. There are too many reasons for pain in nipples like hormonal disturbances, change in shape of breast, improper lingerie etc. Do not think extreme. If still not satisfied just get it examined with gynaecoligist. And for pain in nipple start homeopathic medicines which are safe. Also start applying castor oil on nipples for relief.
