I lost somebody close last year and I feel depressed and prefer keeping to myself please help me.
Loosing someone close is very stressful. You are very young to get into depression. Please try to watch astha channel daily 5-7: 30 am and practice as taught side by side-definitely your physical and mental health will improve.

Hello Doctor, Myself Indrakesh Pandey Sir I would like to ask a question that if a Person leaves Smoking after a long usage how much time it will be taken by human body to secrete the Tar accumulated in body. I was a smoker of 8-10 cigarettes from last 12 Years Now from this Month on 14th I had stopped completely taking cigarettes and not even a single cigarette smoked from then by me. Sir now my Question is that what are the steps to completely flush out the unwanted Tars as I am having a Water Drinking habit of 7-8 litres of water in 24 Hours.

MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
the thing is whatever tar dat went inside your system is attempted at by bodies intrinsic mechanism during all dat while. Now all you can do is positive attitude, eating healthy (lots of fruits n vegetables), exercising like jogging, swimming etc nothing more den this is possibly doable actually. It's a positive change you have brought and dis will do the rest gradually. Hope this helps but feel free to consult further. Take care.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Sangat and smoking

Sewa, Simran and Sangat are the three principles of life as per the most Vedic literature. Even Adi Shankaracharya described Sangat as the main force for living a spiritual life.

Sangat is the company of people you live with. Living in the company of good people makes one good and the reverse is also true.

The same is now being proved in the allopathic context. A research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that when one person quits smoking, than others are likely to follow. One person quitting can cause a ripple effect, making others more likely to kick the habit.
If your spouse stops smoking, you?re 67 percent less likely to continue smoking.
If your friend kicks the habit, it?s about 36 percent less likely that you?ll be smoking.
When a sibling gives up cigarettes, your risk of smoking decreases by 25 percent.
It drops by 34 percent if a co?worker in a small office quits smoking.
It?s sort of like watching dominoes. If one falls, it very quickly causes others to fall.

We should treat people in groups, rather than as individuals. Friends and family need to be involved. If you want to quit, try to get close friends and family to quit as well.

Quitting smoking may have the side benefit of improving social well-being, just as it improves physical health.

The depression is causing all of these sleep problems. She must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that she meets with a doctor she must do so and cooperate to her utmost. Please visit these professionals along with her parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because she could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest she does the opposite of what this depression makes her feel like doing (actually, not doing): she will need to fight this condition. She must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer herself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose herself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in her life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If she did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate her sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use her own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, she needs to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get her out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate her, all the hard word must come from her, and her cooperation with that person is very critical for her success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what she has. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Hi, I appreciate you seeking help. First and foremost, I would advise you to remain mentally strong and think positive. In order that you are not obsessively compelled to think negative and imagine stuff, it is important for you to assure yourself time and again that everything is perfectly ok and distract yourself by visualizing or doing something meaningful, relaxing and one that gives you a sense of inner strength and positive energy/ vibes. Remember, its only a fear, which in your case seems mostly to be related to a negative thought that something might go wrong, that you need to dispel off and understand clearly that there is absolutely nothing in reality to be afraid about. Do have strong belief in yourself, and try performing to the best of your abilities irrespective. Also, whenever it suits, listening to a soothing and inspiring music also helps you to stay calm and relaxed. Do plan your day, listing out the things to be achieved and get going about them one by one confidently without being overly anxious of the results. Simultaneously, do be on a healthy and balanced diet with focus on leafy greens and fresh fruits. Take plenty of water daily and stay hydrated. Keep your lifestyle streamlined and do walking/ exercise, yoga etc all in fresh air. Get yourself exposed to the early morning sunlight for 5 to 10 minutes daily. Keep your stress levels low and stay relaxed and focused. Enjoy your favorite yet light weight films/ serials/ cartoons etc all as you like to watch and get some interesting yet light stories to read while you retire to bed. You may take a glass of warm milk with a pinch of fresh turmeric powder and a tsp of honey mixed to the same, at bed time. At the same time, I would advise you to meet a psychologist in person should you not get relief still. He/ she may require prescribing you an anxiolytic suitably that you can use for a couple of days and one that helps tranquil your mind and help you control your thoughts. Hope this helps. All the very best and take care.

OCD and Depression can co-exist, from what you say OCD symptoms are under control and depressive symptoms aren't. But you have not mentioned the medications, dose and how long you have been taking. If for 6 months your taking from a psychiatrist and you do not feel significant improvement, it's wise to get a second opinion. Also give the 2nd opinion same amount of time to show results. All the best.

How much exercise do people over age 50 really need? How much alcohol can someone over 50 safely drink, and does our tolerance change with aging?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
People over 50 can do considerable exercise and workouts, if they are not suffering from any ailments. In that case they will need to check with their physician to see what is permissible. Even if they are not allowed vigorous exercise, daily brisk walking for at least half an hour is excellent. There is an exercise called High Intensity Interval Exercise, which is for a 20 minute duration only and is excellent for various reasons. One can also follow the XBX Plan which is followed by the Royal Canadian Air force and it is excellent too. You can check for both of these on Google. A man can consume two drinks a day, if he is fit. Yes, as one ages the tolerance will decrease and he will need less to create a buzz.

I am alcoholic. Drink 3 peg daily. I have pain n my whole belly n back. In ultrasound doctor told me that liver z enlarge. So PLZZ sugest me da best medicine.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Enlarged live is a bad sign of excessive drinking. You need to stop immediately. It does not matter when you feel like drinking, as long as you need your drink. This could lead to increased tolerance levels so that over time you will need to drink more to get the same or greater effect. You need to identify why you need to drink, and go back into your childhood to find out other influences on your personality that makes you prone to addiction. Meet with an addiction counselor and work with them to sort out this drive. Your already display the classic tendency to first obsess about it and then compulsively feel driven to meet that need. The simplest thing to do is to do some other interesting activity during the evening times. Meet your oral need with some other non-intoxicating drink like soups, juices, and sodas with lime, etc. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. Another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Make a serious plan with the family and whoever else’s support you can get and act on it fast. As a combination these two therapies (counseling and rehabilitation) will aid in dealing with the addiction. It will however take a long time to completely come off of the enslavement.

Mr. Lybrate-user, these are only vitamins (benfotiamine, chromium is and b12,) lipoleic acid is an anti oxidant, chromium picolinate is a micronutrient, helps insulin action in every one plus essential for various other functions. These drugs are given as additional or supportive therapy and to treat nevous system related symptoms. These are not exclusively for diabetes. If you feel there are side effects because of that, stop the dose. Effects will go away.

It is due to both factors that you mentioned. Taking care of your body needs is as important as social media and friends. Have a routine and stick to it. Don't keep chatting till late night and avoid sleep. Go to bed at a decent hour and have about 7 hours of sound sleep everyday. Establish a time table for your studies and stick to it. You must have time for friends and entertainment but don't overdo anything.

Dear lybrate-user, Gautham needs counselling if he is confused and wants to solve the problems he has has. He does not accept that he has a problem. So what will the counsellor counsel for? Please continue to give him tablets. At one stage, he will say he is overweight or sleepy. Then request someone to make home visit to counsel him - a psychiatric nurse or clinical psychologist or psychiatric social worker will counsel him. But unfortunately they are very few at Hyderabad. So you have request a psychiatrist nearby to visit him.
