I want to boost my memory or brain power. What I have to do, which drug and supplements are best for me. Currently I was taking vinpocetine (cognitol 5mg) from 3 days. I was take 1 tab/day.

General Physician,
Your brain is like a muscle. You need to exercise it regularly. The exciting thing is that you don’t have to be a millionaire to increase your brain capacity. All you need to do is invest a little time to regularly train your brain. So what can you do? Here are 10 simple ways you can increase your brain power and improve your intelligence! 1. Do something new When you experience something ‘new’ you actually ‘stimulate’ your brain! Don’t get stuck in a rut doing the same old things – the only way to change the structure of your brain is to do something new. This creates new neural pathways, increasing your intelligence. You could take a new route to work, try a new recipe for dinner, or even a new form of exercise – mix it up! 2. Exercise regularly It’s been proven that regular exercise helps to increase brain function and enhances neurogenesis. This means that every time you exercise you are creating new brain cells! Get off the couch and get moving! Your brain will thank you for it :) 3. Train your memory How often do you hear people say “I wish I had a better memory!’ Yet no-one does anything about this! If you discipline yourself to memorise phone numbers and other important numbers (passport, credit card, insurance, driving license) you will start to see a marked improvement in your memory 4. Be curious Instead of taking everything at face value, get into the habit of questioning everyday things/products, services that you come into contact with. By being ‘curious’ and questioning everything, you force your brain to innovate & create new ideas. Curiosity may have killed that cat, more importantly it created super important things like electricity and computers! 5. Think positive Stress & anxiety kill existing brain neurons and also stop new neurons from being created. Research has shown that positive thinking, especially in the future tense, speeds up the creation of cells and dramatically reduces stress & anxiety. Try and get a handle on negative thoughts and make an effort to replace them with positive ones. 6. Eat healthy Our diets have a HUGE impact on brain function. Our brains consume over 20% of all nutrients & oxygen that we consume – so remember to feed your brain with the good stuff! (i.e. fresh fruit and veg & plenty of OMEGA 3 oils found in oily fish) 7. Read a book Reading relieves tension & stress (brain-cell killers) because it’s a form of escapism. Research has also shown that using your imagination is a great way to train your brain because you force your mind to ‘picture’ what you are imagining. Reading is a great way to trigger your imagination! 8. Get enough sleep Sleep is like a mini detox for the brain. This is when your body regenerates cells and removes all the toxins that have built up during the day. Get to bed between the hours of 9pm and midnight to benefit from the most effective hours of sleep! 9. Ditch the GPS Gone are the days of map reading! Sat Nav may have made our lives easier, it has also made our brains lazier and less efficient at the same time! Go back to the old school and use a map to navigate every now and then (this exercises the part of your brain responsible for understanding spatial relationships). 10. Ban the calculator Remember back at school when we were taught to use our brains to do simple sums like times tables?! It’s incredible how we now rely on devices like smart-phones and laptops to calculate really simple equations. Resist the urge to work things out using an external device – and use the device you were born with – your brain!

HI, I am 26 years old and I have a relationship for last 2 years. He is very dominating nature and weird too but still I love him so much. We both are totally different rather there is no common point between us. He always said that we do no have any similarities and also said that he is a wrong guy for me I deserves someone better who treats me well still I tried to compromise with things. We also do have a good physical terms too. But 2 months ago I got to know that he had a relation with another girl for last 8 months and that girl committed suicide 2months ago then I got to know about this fact. He got lost in trauma because she did that & me, his family got to know about his did. Still I gave him a chance to prove him as my life partner. But still he is very rude and he taken me as granted. I am very depressed, I am suffering for lack of sleep, bad dreams in sleep, upset nature but as I can't directly blame him or can't say bad words to him he is taking the advantage. Sometimes he pretends that he love him and sometimes like he is forcefully with me. He always said that I have eaten up his space and he cannot live without freedom. I really don't know how can I make myself happy. I really want to be with him but not forcefully.

Dear lady, if the man is so pushy even before marriage his behaviour would more likely worsen after it. So it seems wise to exit this relationship and seek someone more stable. All the best

How do smoking and using alcohol and drugs affect sexual health?

We all know that tobacco contributes to lung and heart disease, but many people don’t realize that it seriously affects sexual health as well. Smoking damages the arteries affecting blood flow to the genitals, and it leads to a loss of desire and arousal in both men and women. In terms of alcohol consumption, most of us know that having a drink or two before sex may help us relax and ease our inhibitions. But high levels of consumption can also result in sexual dysfunction. From causing the loss of erections to preventing your ability to get or stay aroused, alcohol disables the natural sexual response of the autonomic nervous system. Other chemical substances, like marijuana and cocaine, also have known links to low sex drive and sexual dysfunction.

Dear Ravi, It is true that most antidepressants take time to cross the blood brain barrier. But Opipramol reaches brain faster. May be -7 days time. The benefits will come only if it is adequate dose - not just fifty mg. Please consult the doctor again after 1 week. He may increase the dose or add another drug or psychotherapy or relaxation therapy.

I have a child going to class 11th now. He has been displaying a very rebellious and aggressive behavior from sometime now and I feel he is slipping from our hands as he never listens to anyone, does not care about anything and has a cellphone/internet addiction. What can I do to help him? Is there some special counselling that is required for both him and us as parents?

Hello lybrate-user, your boy who studies in grade 11 is an adolescent. Adolescence is a tricky age when an individual is neither an adult, yet, nor a child, anymore. This is also an especially curious age when adolescents are trying very hard to make sense of the world. It is also a period when the body is undergoing many changes (both internally and externally), therefore it is a task to cope with these changes. Firstly, do not label your child's behavior under problem categories like" cell-phone addiction or internet addiction. Know these are just means for your child to explore the world. And exploration is not inherently bad. Try to spend time with him as a family. Talk to him about his day for at least 15 minutes, every day. Talk to him about what your adolescence period was like (both parents). Such activities help adolescents feel more comfortable in their skin. Share meals, together. Most importantly appreciate your child whenever he does something positive or achieves something. Be warm and gentle. In a couple of years your child will be les anxious and settled. Be kind and patient until then. And create opportunities for free-flowing communication. Good luck.

I have a tendency of forgetting any thing. What should I do to empower my memory.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

I clear my stand and we talk too much on this but nothing change. She not even message if getting late I waited for hours leads so much frustration as I outburst we fight. She has problem to send good morning message. I love her too much and it effects me personally and professionally. Please suggest what should i do?

Hi lybrate-user, we all are different from each other. After being in a relation for long period years its usually seen love takes a background and the priorities change, which ofcourse should not be the case, because the essence is love. Don't worry I am sure she equally in love with you, just that bit caught up in other issues. May be you can confront her- have an open heart talk, tell her your expectations remind her of those expectations time and again. Put in efforts to relive those moments that were exciting at the start of your relationship. Express to her that you feel hurt and also learn to adjust. Introspect about your expectations and if you feel its little too much you can lower it. Try to talk to a expert psychologist and gain insight and guidance. All the very best.

You can reduce the frequency by smoking on alternate days for a week. Then thrice a week, twice and after a month you will end at once a week and eventually you will give up smoking.

Get counselling done and don't watch porn stuff, you definitely need moral support, motivational guidance and counseling.

I'm 17. I've been in love with a girl since 2 years now. We have been on and off all this while and it doesn't feel like love, it feels something way more than that. I am very insecure and possessive. She's been promising me to not do stuff I don't like and all. But 1 day after we got apart, she started doing all the worst things she could. She's 1 year younger. I've been getting her dreams and nightmares too. I've been feeling depressed since a really long time and I've felt suicidal quite a lot of times too. I am having issues in my family too. I don't know what to do, I'm just lonely and depressed.

Dear user. I can understand. You are just 17 and your girl friend is just 16. Both of you are in friendship. Even if your family agrees, you cannot marry her before you turn 21 and that means atleast anther 4 years. Keep that in mind and if you want her, keep your friendship going, not possessiveness and insecurity feeling. You should behave good if you want her really. Take care.

How does smoking cigarette effects a person when he is suffering from high level of mental illness. Hi lybrate-user! Hope you have read in the cigarette pack, theatre and at certain places that cigarette smoking is injurious to health, but still many of them ignore and continue to smoke. Actually smoking consists of poisonous materials stuffed in it, which will cause lung damage, throat cancer, mouth cancer and many more. The smoke is also not good for body. Actually I am not aware, why you started smoking was it for friends, fun or an addiction or for relaxing. Whatever the reason may be as the years went by your mental tolerance power has decreased to an extent that you cannot handle even a simple problem in life, which a non-smoker can easily solve and walk happily. Because the smoke gets mixed in the oxygen you intake and your lungs gets air bags are filled with smoke and slowly it starts turning into lung cancer and throat cancer. For e.g, light a sheet of paper for an wooden piece, let it burn keep your hand near that burning piece, notice how the texture of your skin gets changed, this if continued, your hand exposed to the burning piece continuously what will happen imagine. We human beings are not made up of stone, we are of tender skin, we are of flesh and blood. We need to take care of yourself in such a way that what our body can withstand. If we become addicted our mental health also is spoiled, no tolerance power, lack of concentration, getting irritated to silly things, etc, To know more contact a Professional Psychologist at your locality or you can seek a online Psychologist. If you are interested you can contact me for further assistance. Be relaxed. Undergo treatment to overcome smoking. With regards

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Tic disorder comes under behavior addiction. Behavioral addiction is a form of addiction that involves a compulsion to engage in a rewarding non-drug-related behavior – sometimes called a natural reward – despite any negative consequences to the person's physical, mental, social or financial well-being. Behavior addiction needs to be curbed or controlled using your own self will power. Diverting your mind and body away from the circumstances which compels you for the addictive habit, with the help of physical exercises, games, entertainment etc can help you. Never sleep alone. Be always with your family even at night etc are some other tips. Willpower is the key always. Behavioral therapy also works well. Take care.

You must examine if something happened 6 years ago to disturb you. You must meet with a counselor and talk about your stress. Lack of sleep is very harmful to your overall health. Instead of worrying too much about causes, why don’t you implement some of my suggestions, because they work effectively. The lack of sleep, i.e. sleep for less than 6 hours per night, is directly linked to about 86 diseases! So let us first focus on that. In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i.e. breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

You are making it worse for yourself if you do not get attention soon. Psychiatrists are not bad people and they can help you a lot when the going is tough. Since you are troubled by these doctors, go visit a counselor instead in the beginning and I am sure that person will recommend some medical help too. Having a counselor's support may make you feel better about them and medication and you will experience some support. Any way counseling must continue for a long time to be of benefit to you. I think that you are very depressed and need help soon. There is something troubling you emotionally, tremendously. I suspect it has to do with anger. Your life is very precious and for some frivolous reason that you think is insurmountable, you want to end life. And the pressure is building up with no solution in sight. Do you see how untrue all this is?! When you do therapy please explore what in your past could have affected you in this manner. Depression makes you want to withdraw, lie down, sleep, become lethargic, slow down, makes you too lazy to even think etc. You will need to fight this disease. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, and wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, eat more of proteins and vegetables, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch a lot of sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. I hope you can find someone to love and be loved too. Whatever happens please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three things lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings.
