Hi, my name is Dr Sameer Gupta and I’m a cardiologist at M.P Heart Clinic in Greater Kailash in New Delhi. Now, I’m a cardiologist and I treat heart disease. And as you know, heart disease is ubiquitous in India, it is actually an epidemic and it is affecting every one of us. When I say every one of us, all of us know at least one person in our lives who has a heart disease whether it’s your neighbour, your family, friend, and maybe a teacher, a colleague from work. But, unfortunately, a majority of us know at least one person who has a heart disease in some form.
Now the scariest part of heart disease and the scariest form of heart disease is Coronary artery disease that means you have blockages in the arteries of your heart. Now, if you have blockages in the arteries of your heart, there is less amount of blood flow that goes to the heart and you can have chest pain, coronary artery disease, and in severe cases even a heart attack. Now, there are various reasons why people have heart disease. You can have risk factors which increase the risk – diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, a family history, increased stress, poor lifestyle, poor dietary choices. These are just some of the risk factors that increase your risk of having heart disease and when I say heart disease, right now I am referring to blockages in the artery of your heart.
Now, how do you know you have a heart disease?
Well, most people have some sort of discomfort, some sort of symptom that makes them think they have heart disease like they have shortness of breath, they can have just generalised fatigue, feeling of tiredness, they can have chest discomfort, they can have trouble breathing, decreased exercise capacity. For example, they may say that they used to walk two kilometres before but now every time I walk only four hundred meters, I get short of breath, I get this discomfort in my chest, it goes down my arm, I get this increased sensation of gas. That means you may have blockages in the arteries of your heart and it is time you don’t ignore it and actually consult a cardiologist and get this evaluated because proper treatment of heart disease is essential. Early recognition is part of the treatment.
I hope you enjoyed this and feel free to contact your cardiologist. You can contact me via Lybrate or the M.P Heart Clinic website and I will be there to help you.
Thank you so much!

I am 26 years old, recently lost weight of 5 kgs by ignoring the junk food and rice. I am feeling lethargic and breathing problem if I climb steps, digestion issues and mild chest pain.
I am suffering from cholesterol since eight months. Now I take Atchol 10 daily. Doctor advice me not to take milk. My question is shall I take coffee without milk?
Blockage in heart is a common term used for narrowing of coronary arteries. Coronary arteries are vessels, which supply blood and thus oxygen and food to continuously working heart muscles. Heart muscles, which are not tired working from the birth till death, however, cannot sustain long without blood supply.
A reduction in blood supply gives rise to ischemia of heart muscles commonly manifested as chest discomfort or angina. A sudden complete shutdown of blood supply leads to heart attack leading to permanent damage to heart (if blood flow not reestablished promptly).
But what causes these arteries to block? Deposition of LDL cholesterol (low density cholesterol) in inner surface of coronary arteries is the primary reason of these blockages. LDL a normal component of blood (upto certain limit) starts depositing in arteries as early as 10 years of age!
Deposition of billions of LDL molecules over several years on inner surface of arteries gives rise to visible narrowings in these arteries. Flow ahead of these narrowings is reduced in proportion to the narrowing. At a level of 70 % narrowing the flow is reduced to give ischemia (and angina) during exercise. Gradually increasing degree of narrowing reduces the exercise needed for ischemia and angina; a narrowing of more than 90 % can give symptoms at rest. A sudden clot formation at any of these stages can block the flow suddenly giving a heart attack.
If LDL is a normal component of blood, why it is deposited in the arteries at first place?
LDL above a certain limit in blood starts depositing in the arteries. Diabetes, Hypertension, smoking, less exercise and genetics makes it more sticky thus making narrowing faster. This is why these risk elements need to be properly attended for prevention from heart disease. For treatment medicines are important for stopping the progression of narrowings; angioplasty is a method of fast resolution of blockage; and bypass surgery is the method of creating a whole new blood supply for the affected part of the heart.
