My knowledge, there is no medicine in the world so far to cure diabetes. If the claim made is true then diabetes would not have spread as it is now. In india itself there are close 7 crore diabetes patients. T2 diabetes is a condition which can be prevented at the pre diabetic stage, by regular exercise, maintaining normal weight, avoiding too much of sugar and sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods and pastries.

I am hypothyroid patient, is cinnamon, lemon, flex seeds, Chiya seeds are good for me?
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query, For patients with hypothyroidism only soy beans and soy containing products are to be avoided. All other foods, fruits and seeds are fine. You can definitely take all those things mentioned. Most important is your TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L to be free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Thanks.

Take diet for hypothyroidism:- high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread, Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables more plenty of water: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. flax oil, Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help, Avoid few foods in hypothroidism i.e. caffeine products tea, coffee, tabcco, alcohol / wine , kale, broccoli, spinach, mustard green, cabbage, turnip, millet, cassava, linseeds, pine nuts, soy products as soy milk, tofu, soybeans, soy souce, also avoid stress. What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr Mukesh, Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, where there are anti bodies formed against thyroxine secreting cells, resulting in deficiency of thyroxine and hypothyroidism. In this condition Iodine has no role. Treatment is to supplement thyroxine from outside as tablets.

lybrate-user its probably due to secondary microbial infection resulted from high sugar level in blood causing such rashes. First she need her sugar level checked then these miniature infection will. Be controlled automatically and if local application is done simply to manage these rashes nothing gonna change. For now use Calcarea sulph 3X biochemic tabs for 5 days and consult back.

Mr. Lybrate-user, it would have been better if you had mentioned the actual test results, as that would have given a clear idea. On treatment tsh levels should be between 3 to 4 mu/l, for being free from all symptoms. Further, it is better ifyou get a blood glucose test done. Thanks.

Hi, My husband is 32 year old and he has hypothyroidism. Kindly suggest how to control it.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Hi, My husband is 32 year old and he has hypothyroidism. Kindly suggest how to control it.
Lybrate-user, if hypothyroidism is confirmed, then treatment with thyroxine tablets has to be initiated, which will control all the symptoms. Dose has to be decided on the basis of body weight, t4 & tsh levels. Plus soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts and coffee have to be avoided. Tablet should be taken early morning and nothing to be taken for one and half to two hours after that. Should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Also only use whole grain flour for chapati & roti. Np maida and food made out of it. Should exercise for at least 1 h a day. Thanks.

your tsh level is 0.4. take plenty of water.don't eat fast food,Foods to Eat Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, including: Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help, but ask your doctor beforehand. Many common foods and supplements contain compounds that interfere with thyroid functions. In general, it’s best to avoid the following foods and supplements: Soy: Studies suggest that phytoestrogens in soybeans and soy-rich foods may inhibit the activity of an enzyme that makes the thyroid hormones. One study found that women who consumed soy supplements were three times more likely to develop hypothyroidism. Iodine-rich foods: Some forms of hypothyroidism are caused by a lack of sufficient iodine. In such cases, using iodized salt or iodine-enriched foods can be beneficial. But eating too much iodine can have the opposite effect and suppress thyroid gland activity. Check with your doctor before taking supplements. Iron and calcium supplements: Taking iron or calcium supplements can also change the effectiveness of many thyroid medications. High-fiber foods: Although a high-fiber diet is usually recommended, too much fiber may interfere with the absorption of thyroid medicines. Certain vegetables: Cruciferous vegetables that are rich in fiber like broccoli, cabbage, spinach, kale, and Brussels sprouts can inhibit thyroid drug absorption. Reducing the amounts of such produce in your diet may help. Caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol can also influence the effectiveness of thyroid medicine. Ask your doctor for tips on how to regulate or reduce your consumption.
