I have cough from 5 days, it becomes severe in nights. What cough syrup should I prefer?

MBBS
General Physician,
You may be having cough due to acute bronchitis may be allergic in nature. Do warm saline gargle regularly. Have homemade freshly prepared lemon juice which is rich in vitamin c thereby increasing your body autoimmune system which prevents infection. You can have benadryl expectorant cough syrup.

I am 29 years male suffering with cough and chest congestion for last 12 days. What should i do? Please advise.

LCPS, BAM&S
General Physician, Pune
This looks to be bronchitis. You would require to undergo a course of proper antibiotics under care of a family physician. It's not serious if treated early.

Dear lybrate-user, we are sorry to hear that your father is suffering. For pain relief opioids can be used which can be oral or can be used as a skin patch which works for upto 3 days. This comes in various strengths. In this era of targeted therapy, chemotherapy is not the only available treatment. Also, there are many myths associated with chemotherapy use, with improved supportive care, chemotherapy is not only effective but is safe and relatively hassle free. There are also multiple oral targeted agents (not chemotherapy) available for lung cancer which if used in patients with certain specific genetic mutations in the tumor are extremely effective and well tolerated. I suggest you would do better by seeking help of a medical oncologist who can guide you regarding targeted therapy and pain relief so as to make your father more comfortable and have a better quality of life. Best wishes.

I have a prolonged wheezing problem. I have used every medicine to cure that but I doesn't. Please suggest me some tips to come through wheezing. Thank you in advance.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Since the body area that needs utmost attention is the chest, one should try to keep it warm. Use fomentation bottle to warm up the chest, upper back, and back side of the neck. Keeping your feet in warm water is also helpful. It has been found by the researchers that drinking 3 glasses of orange juice everyday can bring down wheezing to 70%. Steam helps relieve the symptoms of all the respiratory tract ailments. Throw a towel on your head to inhale steam from a mini sauna, for 10 minutes. Steam will humidify your respiratory passages, easing your breathing, that will help in looking after the wheezing.
