BAHA Implant and Cochlear Implant Surgery

BAHA Implant and Cochlear Implant Surgery

BAHA Implant
Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) is a device surgically implanted to help people suffering from a loss of hearing. Most conventional hearing aids transmit sound through air conduction. The BAHA device is suitable for conductive or mild-moderate mixed hearing loss.

Problems with hearing in the middle or outer ears can be helped with the BAHA device. The sound waves received by the BAHA device bypass the middle ear and get delivered straight to the functioning cochlea in both ears.

A BAHA device comprises of two parts:

  1. The processor
  2. A fixture which is surgically implanted behind the ear in the bone.

The implant is embedded in the bone. The processor, which remains outside, is attached to the implant. There is a microphone on the processor that picks up sounds. The sounds are passed on to the implant. The implant vibrates which triggers the Cochlear. You can consider wearing a BAHA implant if other conventional hearing aids do not work for you. BAHA implants are also given to people with collapsed or irritated ear canals.

Cochlear Implant Surgery

A complex, small electronic device that helps hearing in people with severe hearing loss or deafness is used in the Cochlear Implant Surgery. The cochlear implant comprises of an external piece behind the ear and another piece that is surgically implanted under the skin. A cochlear implant comprises of four parts:

  1. A microphone which picks up sounds from the surroundings
  2. A speech processor which chooses and arranges the sounds the microphone picks up
  3. A receiver/stimulator and transmitter that picks up signals from the speech processor and changes them into electric impulses
  4. An electrode ray, a bunch of electrodes, receives impulses the stimulator sends and transmits them to different areas of the auditory nerves.

The implant does not cure deafness; it only gives you a useful portrayal of sounds in the environment and considerable aid in understanding speech.

The surgery is done in the following way:

  1. The area around the site of the implant is shaved or cleaned
  2. The patient's vital signs are monitored through cables, patches and monitors attached to him or her
  3. General anaesthesia is administered through IV or through a face mask
  4. After the device is implanted, the patient is taken to the recovery room for the anaesthesia effect to lessen. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

Dear, your doctor did best for you because thats the protocol which is followed in sudden hearing loss cases. I would suggest you to visit audiologist and take a hearing aid trial, looking at your age audiologist might give you near invisible hearing aid. Hearing aid will help you in managing your hearing loss along with tinnitus. Let me know if it helps. Thanks.

Chicken pox is a viral disease and the treatment of it is symptomatic. You are suffering from it from last 2 days & it will take 7-10 days to completely recover from it. You are advised to take simple medicines to treat your fever & apply skin soothing cream such as calamine lotion to get relief from itching. You are adviced to take plenty of water & eat juicy fruits like melon, watermelon, orange & lemon water. This will increase you immunity & make your recovery fast.

According your symptoms of hearing loss since one year, you should go for an audiogram. Pure tone audiometry .to find out what type of loss. This only can lead to right treatment. .please get a full check up by a specialist. .it can be a simple wax in your ear or a nerve conduction deafness. You need to go through hearing tests. Thank you for consulting .take care.

Dear lybrate user if you r having sensorineural type of hearing loss no medicines will help to restore the hearing loss. Only in sudden hearing loss steroids help to some extent. So in your case the option left for you is digital programmable hearing aids. Most probably you have used analog one, go for digital programmable hearing aids. It will help for sure. Consult with me for further details.

From early childhood, I have severe hearing loss in my right ear. I do not remember whether it was from birth or was a result of some hitting done on my right ear by one of the bullies (i remember the incident remotely, though can not attribute the hearing loss to that). My left ear is perfect and am a healthy guy of 42 years doing very well professionally and part of top management in one of the reputed companies. I had at the age of 18 years went for a ent check up where they diagnosis as severe hearing loss in the right ear. However, when I put in a earphone in my right ear and tightly close my left ear to close any sound, I can remotely hear, but only very light sounds. My query is, can I try to recover my right ear hearing or leave it? Is there any hope of recovery? Though you might say it needs to be checked, but what do you make out first cut from the details that I have provided? Now a days with so much advances in med sciences, I am hoping you cd help me with your valuable advice and way forward.

hi, if its severe loss or damage to your inner ear unfortunately it cannot be reveresed. like you mentioned in the comment that science have advanced to the extent to help the patient to hear better with a better hearing aid and customised solutions as per the reqyirment of the patient. if the loss is creating a serious impact on your lifestyle or ur profession would suggest you to go for a good hearing device. if you are shy to wear a external device you have various models which can fit inside your ear as well and that may give a bit of sigh from your condition

You must be having ear drum perforation and infection in the ear. Start tab. Advent 625 mg three times a day and tab. Rantac 150 mg twice a day (empty stomach) and oflobe-d ear drops 3-3-3 for 1 week. Get an audiometry (hearing test) done. U may require surgery.
