Dental Health in Pregnancy

Dental Health in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a transformation phase in itself -it brings with it changes to almost all body systems. The oral tissues and the teeth are also affected significantly. Extra precaution is required to maintain regular oral health and avoid severe decay and/or gum disease. If not avoided, the dental infections can cause severe systemic infections and require strong antibiotics, x-rays, minor surgeries, and root canal therapy which may not be safe during pregnancy.

Higher levels of estrogen during pregnancy in the blood lead to a lot of visible changes in the oral cavity - higher incidence of tooth decay, gingival and periodontal inflammation, and even minor benign tumours in some cases. The notorious morning sickness plays havoc with the person's oral hygiene habits, thereby further complicating the situation.

Prior to pregnancy: A pre-pregnancy dental check-up to look for gum health and decay would go a long way in a healthy pregnancy, from the dental point of view at least. A thorough scaling and screening for cavities done before pregnancy can help avoid dental visits during the term, other than for routine checkup.

Pregnancy: If that pre-pregnancy visit could not happen, then visiting your dentist should be one of the first things to do as soon as you have confirmed your pregnancy. At this stage, no dental treatment can be done. Any elective procedures (cosmetic, etc.) will have to be done only after delivery. If the dentist identifies no cause for worry, that is great news. However, if there are any causes for concern, like a decay, the non-invasive treatment should be done at the earliest. When you are pregnant, note the following from a dental point of view:

  1. Oninvasive treatments like minor fillings can be done
  2. Regular scaling and polishing is not a problem
  3. Let the dentist know about all the medications you are taking
  4. Visit the dentist every 3 to 4 months for a regular check-up
  5. Follow good oral hygiene practices including, brushing, rinsing, and flossing
  6. Switch to a bland toothpaste in case of severe morning sickness
  7. Watch your diet - the teeth forming in the fetus require nutrition through you, so ensure adequate intake of minerals like calcium and potassium
  8. Avoid sweets and sticky/chewy foods that can lead to plaque formation

Though dental procedures can be done during the 4th to 6th month, they are best avoided, which can be done with better planning and some minimal care.

After delivery: After the delivery of the baby, please visit your dentist to ensure you have again ensured there is no emergent dental condition requiring attention. Resume your regular dental care after delivery.
With a little planning and extra care, dental health can be managed nicely during pregnancy with minimal to no pain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

Hi, I want to know Tongue teeth se baar baar katna kya problem hai wo bhi aage se.

Hi, I want to know Tongue teeth se baar baar katna kya problem hai wo bhi aage se.
If it is occurring rarely, then it might be a problem only temporarily as long as that traumatised area is causing you pain. Agar repeatedly cut Rahi hai then definitely it's a problem that shud be taken care of, as constantly if you are having those cuts in one particular area then there has to be some specific reason for it. You may have to get the cause removed as too much trauma in one particular area can lead to other serious problems. So please consult your doc to find out the reason.

Bad breath or halitosis as it is caused is an unpleasant smell from the mouth of a person as he breaths out, when breathing in n out r normal essential functions, the causes can b basically decided into two a local causes b gen causes. Mostly it is due to local causes which r a poor cleaning of teeth, mouth tongue, lodgement of food in cavities , in between teeth , chewing on some thing which smells eg paan masalas, chewing gums , sound, ills hie etc. When some smells may b pleasant but stagnant u cleaned smells r always bad as the come from decaying food stuff etc it's like u r passing around a dustbin . As mouth is not dustbin keep it clean n always, the other local causes r gum infections, infection of tonsils, infection of sinuses basically maxillary sinus situated in middle face two of them behind nose.Other sinuses may also contribute but to very little extent, some nose infection may also contribute to the smells. Unclean skin like black heads type on nasal skin , very oily skin may also contribute n enhance the smells.
THE BASIC CAUSE BEING UNCLEAN BASIC REMEDY IS ALSO THE SAME KEEP CLEAN , REGULAR CHEWING , CONSUMPTION OF TOBACCO RELATED STUFF eg CHEWING SMOKING WILL ADD TO THE SMELLS. ANS AGAIN STOP BAD HABBITS, USE STANDARD TOOTH PASTE, BRUSH N USE CORRECT TECHNIQUE CONSULT DENTIST FOR DEMON. MOST OF UR PROB OF BAD BREATH WUOLD B SOLVED.
IN NEXT WILL DISCUSS OTHER CAUSES

In order to replace a missing tooth one can get a bridge done. Or else an implant

I have a severe wisdom tooth pain. What should I do so that I can feel better. Any home remedies?

BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
You can use. Clove oil to relieve pain as home remedy. But it usually doesn't help for long. Kind advise would be to get yourself checked and take medications for the same. If it still persists. Then get an xray done check for angulation of tooth.
