Eczema in Infants: What You Should Know?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Jaipur
Eczema in Infants: What You Should Know?

Are you observing red, crusty patches on the surface of your infant’s skin during his/her first month after birth? This is an indication of infant eczema. It is a dry, itchy skin condition which may occur on any part of your child’s body and is commonly found on the cheeks, legs and arms. This condition is sometimes confused with cradle cap, which is another skin condition.

Causes-

Eczema usually runs in families and is hereditary. If you have eczema, it is likely that your child may have it too. Several problems in the skin barrier allow germs inside and moisture to go out. This is a common cause of eczema in infants. The condition occurs when the body makes insufficient fatty cells or ceramides. When there is not enough of these, the skin loses water and becomes extremely dry.

Does Eczema In Infants Go Away By Itself?

In many cases, infant eczema goes away on its own and most infants outgrow the condition by the time they are ready for school. However, some children do get eczema during their adulthood. This may continue for years without specific symptoms. Such children also tend to have dry skin.

Treatment-

Here are some home treatment options for infant eczema:

  1. You should use moisturisers on your child. Moisturisers containing ceramides are a good option, which are available at all over-the-counter (OTC) stores by prescription. You can also opt for good moisturisers, fragrance-free creams and ointments like petroleum jelly. This helps in keeping your baby’s skin in retaining natural moisture. Apply these after a bath.

  2. A lukewarm bath is beneficial for your child. It helps in hydrating and cooling the skin. The water should not be very hot and the bath should not exceed 10 minutes. You can also add oatmeal soaking products to your baby’s scrub for soothing itchiness.

  3. You must use mild and unscented body soaps for your baby. This is because perfumed, antibacterial and deodorant soaps are rough for your baby’s skin. Scrub some soap on areas of your child’s body where there is dirt, such as the genitals, feet and hand. Do not rub or pat his/her skin.

  4. Several medicines are also used for the treatment of infant eczema. These include hydrocortisone creams and ointments, which help in easing inflammation and itching. You should not apply these medicines in excess as they can thin the skin on the affected areas.

You should consult a doctor on observing any signs or symptoms of eczema on your child’s skin. This will help in proper diagnosis of the problem and an early treatment plan will prevent further deterioration of the symptoms.

5 Healthy Habits That Every Child Should Follow

5 Healthy Habits That Every Child Should Follow

Few things in life take longer than habits to be inculcated and eventually to die out. Every parent tries in his or her way to teach the child certain healthy habits, those that they wish would be followed long enough to be internalized by them. Certain healthy habits that every child should follow are:

  1. Include a lot of vegetables in the diet: There is an array of vegetables available in the market, which is replete with rich nutritional values. Though children are generally averse to the idea of eating vegetables, it is your duty to inculcate in them the habit of eating vegetables and constantly remind them of their rich nutritional benefits.
  2. Never skip breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and is often the most ignored. Most children have the propensity to skip breakfast if they are late and generally they are seldom reprimanded by their parents. As a parent, you must make it a point not to take this lightly and severely insist on a healthy breakfast every morning.
  3. Indulge in physical activities: With the advent and easy access of technology, going out to play in has become a distant reality, one that is never explored. However, it goes without saying that nothing can substitute the physical and mental benefits that a physical activity entails. It not only keeps the body of your child fit but also helps in keeping the mind fresh.
  4. Read daily: Few things in life can be as rewarding and fulfilling as reading a book. However the habit does not come easy and as a parent it is your responsibility to induce in them this. Try to make your child read a few pages everyday till they take it up themselves out of their volition.
  5. Drink water and skip the soda: The many flavored sodas, which are available serve as a more palatable alternative to the drab water for the children. Though the choice may seem convenient, it must be snipped off right from the beginning. Sodas are packed with harmful preservatives and should be duly avoided by children. Instead, they must choose the bottle of water to quench the thirst.

Good morning. For a 1 year old weighing 10 kg poohing 7-8 times a day is normal unless if he has behavioural changes, very watery loose motions, dehydration signs, not passing urine less frequently, bloody stools, foul smelling stools, decreased intake of food. Hence if these signs are present in your kid then only go for medicational treatment or else its better to not use antibiotics unnecessarily which seems irrational. Thank you, have a nice day.

My son is just 38 days old. He cries often due to hunger. I am on breastfeeding. Some of ma relatives are telling he is not getting enough milk. Also he s looking so lean. I am feeling guilty that I can't produce enough milk. My nipples are too sore. I am using breast shield to feed him. He latches well on the shield. Please suggest what should be done for increasing the milk flow.

Fellowship in Neonatology, MRCPCH(UK), Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
Use nipcare on sore nipples after every feed which you can wipe off with a wet cotton before every feed baby should not be sucking on the nipples, he should be sucking on areola at the rim of the black portion on the breast. To increase the milk flow do the following: take proper diet, adequate water and at least 1l of milk or milk products everyday take proper rest and remain calm and stress free you can take lactonic granules one teaspoon twice a day with milk for 2 weeks and tab perinorm one tab three times a day for one week on demand breast feeding to your baby.

I'm a 14 year old female who was diagnosed with Otosclerosis. If I have mild hearing loss in my left ear how long do you think it will take for me to go completely deaf in one ear? And also a stapedectomy was recommend as a surgical treatment if I wanted it by my ENT specialist. She told me that it.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear Lybrate User....before Stapedectomy you can try Homoepathic THIOSINAMAN 200, 5 drops in a cup of water early morning before brushing your teeth along with Homoeopathic FERRUM PIC 6X tablets, 4 tablets, thrice daily for at least 1 month....this combination has effectively increased the level of hearing in some cases of deafness due to otosclerosis in my experience

Pediatrician, Pune
If the adenoids are source of recurrent infections, she may require a good dose of antibiotics, her environment need s to be clean with smoke, dust and allergen free, obviously along with good exercise and a healthy nutritious diet, if inspite of best efforts, the problems are persisting, she may require an adenoidectomy if they cause problem with sleep, with mouth breathing, protrusion of teeth.

My daughter is 14 years old but her height is not increasing she is 4.5 feet and all my family members are above 6 feet. What to do?

My daughter is 14 years old but her height is not increasing she is 4.5 feet and all my family members are above 6 fe...
Calculate your projected height. Working in inches or centimeters, you can try to predict your height based on the height of your parents. o Add up your mom and dad's heights (in inches or cm). o Add 5 inches (13 cm) if you're a boy; subtract 5 inches (13 cm) if you're a girl. o Divide by 2. o The answer is your predicted height, give or take 4 inches (10 cm). Note that this isn't an absolute calculation, but it should be pretty close. Eat right. Ensuring that you're getting all the vitamins and minerals your body requires will help you grow to your full height. Take a supplement targeted at your age group with breakfast each morning, and try to incorporate certain foods into your diet. Here are some specific suggestions: ? Make sure to take in an abundance of carbohydrates and calories for that is where the body gains its energy to grow. ? Get plenty of calcium (found in dairy products and green vegetables). Calcium promotes bone growth, and can help prevent osteoporosis. ? Taking 500 mg of niacin has shown to significantly increase growth hormone levels only when taken on an empty stomach. ? Get sufficient vitamin D (which can be obtained through eating fish, alfalfa, or mushrooms, or spending enough time in the sun). Vitamin D promotes bone and muscle growth in children[, and a deficiency has been shown to stunt growth and cause weight gain in teenage girls. If you don't like fish, consider a purified fish oil supplement (purifying removes mercury). ? Take in lots of protein (from meat, eggs, tofu or legumes). Proteins provide an essential building block your body needs in order to grow. At least one (preferably two) of your meals each day should include a high quality protein. ? Up your zinc intake (oysters, chocolate, peanuts, eggs, peas, asparagus and supplements). A zinc deficiency can cause stunted growth in children . The best way to make sure you meet your body's daily need is by taking a vitamin or supplement that includes zinc. ? Eat on a regular schedule. You should be eating 3 meals a day, with small snacks between breakfast and lunch, and lunch and dinner. Try to schedule these events at roughly the same time each day. Exercise your body. Sadly, if your growth plates have closed as due to your age, exercising will not affect your growth rate.[11] But if you enjoy swimming, biking, running, or yoga, among other sports, and you haven't stopped growing, exercise combined with the right diet and proper sleep should help you grow. ? Doing stretches has some beneficial effects. There are tons of "grow taller" exercises on the Internet, which claim to help you grow. As mentioned above, after your growth plates have closed, you will not grow taller. Therefore, there's no scientific evidence to suggest you can grow taller through stretching. Stretching may improve your posture.for further assistance you can concern me privately.

I have already replied ur same query in which age of baby wasn't mentioned. Since baby is 1.5 years old and must be taking all nutritious diet, it may have not much impact on baby development. But it is advisable to consult doctor for ur own benefits.

MD Paediatrics, MBBS

Is this problem since begining or has started recently? I suggest you to stop liquids or beverages after 7 pm. Ask her to empty her bladder before she goes to bed. Consult your paediatrician for the dosage of medication you are using, some times you need to increase the dosage of the medicine till it works.

Lower abdominal pain in children even in the right lower quadrant does not necessarily mean appendicitis. Common causes of such pain are tonsilitis, roundworm infestation and constipation and rare cause is vasculitis (Henoch Schonlein Purpura) where there are also rashes all over the body with itching. So you should consult a Pediatric Surgeon before anyone else. Probably your kid will not need surgery!

My grand son is hyper active. He is 5 years old. All the time he does some thing without caring for its consequences. Please advice what do we do to change him.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Bangalore
The child should be shown to a child psychologist. Parents would need counselling on how to deal with the child.
