Hi sir. My son has 6 year old but still he is doing toilet in bed. Pls. Suggest what we do.

Pediatrician, Mumbai
Toilet meaning urine or stool? if urine then you can get a urine routine done to rule out infection. If reports normal then you can wait for some few months before starting therapy. If stool the you need to consult a pediatrician.

Is it safe to give pedicloryl syrup to 4 months old baby? if yes then in what quantity? the baby is all the time cranky and is not having proper sleep. Only sleep for an hour max and thn wakes up and cry. Please suggest what to do?

DNB (Pediatrics), Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Bhiwadi
No medication is advisable for a routine problem so I would not recommend you to give pedicloryl for it as it would only give a immediate relief but would not solve the root problem. It is important to identify the problem. Inadequate feeding, improper sleeping atmosphere or temperature (too warm or too cold) too much noise etc. Are some of the most common problems. A healthy baby feeds for 15-20 mins at one time which should be followed by burping for 10-15 mins for a comfortable stomach and sleep. Try to look for the root problem before turning to medicine.

A baby should be given breast milk exclusively for 6 months. No need of giving powder milk or cow's milk. A breast milk is sufficient energy wise and nutrition wise uptil 6 months. If your breast milk has reduced substantially and your baby is losing weight only then you can about top feeds like formula or cow's milk.

Can I give yogurt dahi to my 10 months old son? And where do I get wheat grass? What all food I can give to my son.

General Physician,
Can I give yogurt dahi to my 10 months old son? And where do I get wheat grass? What all food I can give to my son.
You can give Yoghurt and give all homemade foods. Wheatgrass is available in super markets and online Wheatgrass juice is a popular health drink. It is thought to benefit health only when fresh and taken on an empty stomach immediately after extraction. But there is no research to date that supports this.In foods and beverages, wheatgrass extracts are used as a flavoring component.

Even if I put her two spoons ...
Better avoid milk & give cereals, milk products. Keep changing foods offered. If vomitings are persistent any antiemetic drug will help. Solid food will provide condensed calories vital for growth.

Germs/bacteria are on our skin in millions - if we eliminate all germs from our body we would not survive more than a day.

Gas forms in every individual so in kids too. Don't give any medicine for normal happenings in life. Since gas formation is no disease so no medicine and its dose.

Is Your Baby Crying Too Much - 6 Homeopathic Remedies You Can Try!

Crying is often considered as a good sign for babies, especially when the baby is too small to talk about how he or she may be feeling. Crying is often an indicator that the baby is hungry or sleepy. But if your baby is crying a lot, it could also mean that he or she is in pain or distress. Blocked nasal passages, sudden shock, colic and indigestion problems are some of the most common problems that can cause frequent and constant crying. Homeopathy is a holistic approach that can help in treating persistent crying when it comes to babies. Read on to know more.

  1. Chamomilla: This medicine can be used when the child is whining relentlessly. It can also treat fretful behaviour, as well as irritability. Also, this medicine can be used when the child needs constant carrying around and petting. When the child is never still and suffering from earache or headache, this medicine can be used too.
  2. Cina: Screaming children and their discomfort can be treated with Cina. This medicine can also be used to treat symptoms like moaning and coughing along with anxious behaviour. Also, when children gasp for air and end up turning pale, this medicine can be prescribed. Further, the doctor may prescribe this medicine when the child is having nightmares and not getting enough sleep.
  3. Causticum: This medicine is ideal for children who are extremely sensitive and cry at the smallest instance. In such cases, the child will be cranky because of the threat of pain or idea of pain, rather than the actual pain. This child will usually cry persistently because of a low threshold of pain. In such cases, this medicine can help.
  4. Rheum: Impatience and vehemence can be treated with the help of this medicine. In many cases the child will be cranky throughout the night and toss all night as well. The child may even be cranky with his or her favourite items and toys. Unpleasantness is usually a part of a child’s behaviour in such cases. Rheum can help in tackling this problem with regular doses.
  5. Belladona: This medicine is helpful for children who begin to cry violently as if he or she is in severe pain. Teeth gritting and screams are common symptoms of children who will require this medicine. This is especially helpful when the child is crying without any apparent reason.
  6. Aconite: When the child cries constantly and becomes anxious, Aconite can be used to help soothe the child. This medicine can also help in cases where the child is scared of falling off to sleep and is anxious.

Appendicitis in Children

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
Appendicitis in Children

The appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine in the right belly area. It is a vestigial organ as it has no specific role to play in humans, but the organ is still seen, though in a very small size compared to the earlier living beings in the evolutionary chain. Acutely inflamed appendix is the most common cause leading to it removal, often seen in the ages of 10 to 19.

Causes: The appendix gets infected by two main reasons - general infection in the abdomen that reaches the appendix or blockage of the appendix leading to inflammation and swelling within it. The appendix is a blind pouch, and there is a good chance for its blockage from food particles, lymphatic tissue, or even sometimes feces. Some of the potential risk factors for appendicitis include a diet low in fiber, high in sugar, gut flora, and family history.

Symptoms/Diagnosis: In adults, the appendicitis has very characteristic symptoms including acute pain in the right upper part of the belly associated with fever and vomiting. However, in children, the pain may not be as tell-tale a sign but is still quite diagnostic of appendicitis. However, presence of the following symptoms together is surely indicative of appendicitis.

  1. Right abdominal pain, especially rebound tenderness, where pressure placed in the right upper part of the belly and released leads to excruciating pain.
  2. Fever, nausea, and vomiting
  3. Abdominal fullness or bloating
  4. Elevated white blood count (as with most infections)

Additionally, the younger the child, the symptoms are not very clear, but ultrasound will confirm the diagnosis. The inflamed, enlarged appendix will be visible on the images and could be surrounded by free fluid. CT scan also can be considered if required to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment: As noted above, children present with symptoms that do not pinpoint to appendicitis. Treatment usually takes two routes:

If diagnosed as appendicitis before rupture, then surgical removal is the best method to contain its symptoms. Other symptoms like fever and nausea and vomiting usually subside a couple of days after the surgery.
If the appendicitis goes unnoticed and ruptures, then the intestinal cavity can get infected, which is called peritonitis. Earlier, the preferred approach was to control the infection and then go for removal. However, lately, removing the appendix followed by antibiotics to control the infection is the preferred approach.
The prognosis and recovery from appendicitis is very good. Deaths have occurred only in very small infants, where they are not able to pinpoint the area and therefore it can go undiagnosed, leading to rupture and subsequent death.

Early identification is the key to proper identification, immediate treatment, and complete recovery from appendicitis.

Do not worry just relax. Your child will overcome it soon. Just avoid keeping him on bed all alone. Someone should be there to observe him so he might not get injured again.

I have an eight month old baby boy he has suddenlystopped taking bottle feed he starts crying wen I offer him bottle milk as in formula milk but he is properly taking breast milk and other food too What could be the reason behind it?

Please do not force your baby to take the bottle if he is taking breastmilk without any problems. You might want to include milk in his food preparations so you may give him milk, but if you are continuing breastfeeding, that's all he requires as far as milk is concerned. Some kids become averse to the smell of plastic, so do not worry too much for this.

My 8 year old son normally behave very well. But some times he gets too angry, specially at the time of study and eating. His angriness comes from his inner side which reflects in his face. After some time again he becomes normal. Is his behaviour normal? Does he require any counselling?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, Tank for your question. Teach your child about peaceful ways to express her anger. Most people feel anger and aggression sometimes -- including children. Adults tend to have better control over their behavior when these feelings arise. Children, however, may turn their energy toward violent behavior such as kicking, biting, or hitting. I suggest online consultation. Take care.
