My wife recently had a very bad breast infection in her left breast. At first we were very tensed thinking it might be breast cancer. She was in a lot of pain. The cancer was ruled out after doing sonography and mammography. But we are still worried. My question is what are the causes of such infections and how can these be avoided. Also what are the symptoms for breast cancer?

Was she feeding her baby ? Most common cause of breast infection is breast abcess due to collection of extra milk , reason women are told to extract extra milk and store it in fridge. Other reasons are Diabetes , Bad Hygiene. You have got tested for cancer , get it repeated after 1 year by ultrasound which is equally correct to look for swellings and like mammography does not carry radiation risk.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help for both your mother and elder sister. As regards elder sister's case, it is not possible to comment on the chances of a recurrence given the short description of the issue. Nevertheless, from a dietary standpoint, it is advisable to go for low glycemic foods that is rich in leafy greens and also appropriate seasonal fruits. Simultaneously, being on Tamoxifen, foods like soy, tangerine, grape fruit, genestein supplements etc all are best avoided. An integrative treatment with alternative medicines can improve clinical outcomes. Again, given the acute case of COPD in your mother's case, it is always advisable to take emergency medical help suitably first and do as recommended. You can connect with all relevant reports and treatment history for both, for further naturopathic/ integrative traction as would deem appropriate contextually.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking clarification. Well, as I understand, primary heart cancers are extremely rare the exact reason of which is not clearly known. However, metastatic heart cancers occur more frequently than the primary heart cancers, and the same is usually treated conventionally like other cancer types. Simultaneously, it is understood that an integrative treatment with alternative medicines helps improve clinical outcomes too. Hope this clarifies. Take care. Sincerely,

Survival Rates For Blood Cancer Patients

Survival Rates For Blood Cancer Patients

Blood cancer is a broad term. Firstly, there can be an attack of cancerous formation of any organic physiological system, which occurs in different aspects of the circulatory system, and is broadly termed as blood cancer. There are mainly three types of blood cancer, but each type may have numerous variations:

Leukaemia: In this case, the multiplying cancer cells attack either the red blood cells or the bone marrow. The circulatory system becomes severely impaired and the production of red blood cells decreases rapidly, thereby causing the count of red blood cells to decrease every day along with a higher white blood cell count.

Symptoms: Anaemia, extreme weakness and fatigue, shortness of breath in regular activities, and vulnerability to the slightest of infections. Certain kinds of leukaemia are associated with symptoms like coughing, fatigue, itching, nausea, and aversion towards food.

Lymphoma: In this case the cancerous cells affect the lymphocytes, commonly known as the white blood cells, thereby causing the white blood cell count to decrease and hence causing the body immune system to crash. Even the slightest of infections become the biggest dangers.

Symptoms: Swollen lymph nodes (usually painless), acute weight loss, appetite loss, fever, sudden chills and sweating at night.

Myeloma: In this case, the plasma is affected by the multiplying cancerous cells, again causing severe impairment to the body immune system.

Symptoms: Initially, there are no symptoms but gradual prognosis symptoms like fatigue, extreme back pain, vulnerability towards infections, chest pain, and kidney problems arise.

Cures and Survival Rates-

With enormous research and amazing medical breakthroughs, blood cancer has become treatable and has been overcome by many. In a recent research, a curative alternative has been found which tries to block the release of the enzymes causing metastasis, thereby causing the enlargement of the cancerous cells to get blocked. There are numerous more alternative treatments like herbal treatments using herbs like xanthones and Garcinia mangostana, which have proven to be effective in treating even second and third levels of blood cancer.

According to the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), 2011 had 1,012,533 people recover from various stages of blood cancer. In the 1960s, the five-year relative survival rates were only 14%. In the 1970s, the rate increased to 34.5% and from 2005–2011, the rates improved till 61.7%. This estimate includes both the population of cancer survivors in the following categories:

  1. Those who are totally cured of cancer.

  2. Those who have just recovered.

  3. Those who are still recovering.

Is there any cure of brest cancer if reports of sonomammography shows birads 6-known malignant.

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, Mammogram is just one investigation for breast cancer. If it says malignant, then we need to do a fnac /biopsy of the lump. We also need to do a xray mammogram, a xray chest and a sonography of the abdomen and bone scan to stage the disease. If the disease is localized only to the breast and/or the axilla (armpit), it can be completely removed.

DNB, MBBS

Prostate is a hormone dependent tumour, sometimes linked with smoking and other environment factors. You should screen psa levels annually after age of 40 yrs and if raised then biopsy must be done. It is not advisable to manipulate hormonal levels prophylactically.

Liver cancer

Cancers which starts from somewhere else and end up in the liver are not primary liver cancers. Liver cancer also known as hepatic cancer starts in the liver and not from another organ. Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) tends to occur in livers damaged by birth defects alcohol abuse or chronic infection with diseases such as hepatitis b and c hemochromatosis (a hereditary disease associated with too much iron in the liver) and cirrhosis

Hi I am 34 years old woman, I have 4 big and 4 small epidermal cyst (not sebaceous cyst) on my scalp, duration 3 to 4 years, no pain no other sufferings and movable, so what can I do now ?

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. I would advise you to try the following natural steps that may help reduce the inflammation and possibly prevent a recurrence as well - (a) streamline your diet. Include more of leafy greens and fresh fruits including red grapes. Minimize intake of spicy, oily, fatty, and high calorie foods including fast foods. (b) stay hydrated well. Take at least 8 to 10 glasses of filtered water daily (c) avoid constipation at all costs. Exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes. (d) take'sporlac' (probiotic) tablets once daily for the next 21 days. (e) take'haridra' (himalaya) capsules 250 mg, twice daily for next 1 month after food. (f) take 250 ml of fresh pineapple juice (unsweetened) daily. (g) do not squeeze the cyst for it may be painful and lead to infections/ inflammations. Nevertheless, you should consult an experienced dermatologist/ cosmetologist here and seek his/ her opinion on the way forward, as well. You may also decide to remove the bigger ones through surgery should you find them causing inconvenience. Now a days, laser surgery is known to minimize invasion and helps reduce the overall scar length to inconspicuously small, about a third of the cyst diameter. However, it does not guarantee a recurrence or permanent cure though. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely.

What is cancer? Is there any medicines for this disease? Is there any prevention methods. If yes please tell me doctor. Thank you in advance.:)

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer is caused by abnormal uncontrolled proliferation of cells, usually caused by some faulty signals in the body which lose check over few cells and they become autonomous. It can be lifestyle related like lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, fatty food, hormonal imbalance, viruses, pollution, smoking, tobacco, or may be genetic. One must be careful about what we eat and what kind of environmental factors effect us in our surrounding and avoid known carcinogens. Regular screening and health check up to rule out any early disease prior to producing symptoms. Turmeric, tulsi leaves, wheat grass etc have anticancer properties.
