Please see to it that you wear cotton socks. Trim your nails regularly wear sandal with straps comfortable sports shoes of reputed brands dry your feet after a wash or a bath. Take special care of areas in between the toes. (fungal infections are common) any cuts and wounds have to be attended by doctors. Most importantly keep sugars under control.

I am 40 years old and I weigh 95 kgs. I have just started gyming and going normal cardio for 1 hour. I am diabetic as well. Please suggest what should I do to reduce weight and maintain my sugar as well

Post Doctoral Fellowship in G I Surgery, MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Panchkula
Your bmi is 40. 9, and you are morbidly obese. You have to persist with a low carbohydrate and low fat high protein diet. Stop all cereals, sugar, bakery products and desserts. Take the white of 2 boiled eggs and lots of fruits and green vegetables and salads. If you don' t loose weight soon you will develop high bp also also. You need bariatric surgery as a permanent solution and it will treat your diabetes also. For more details read the health tips I have written on this website or send me a personal question.

Dear , Creatinine levels can be changed with proper water metabolism and does not necessarily need medicine support all the time. Neprosave is too strong a medicine. First of all, you need to reduce your weight by atleast 35 kgs to be able to reduce the burden on all you body organs. Any amount of medicine will help reduce the symptom, but a proper lifestyle, weight, proper regulated food are essential to maintain proper health. Regards.

I am 62 years old my fasting blood sugar 120 post lunch 180 I am using melmet s/r 1000mg half morning half ager noon and 1000mg night is it correct dose? I am cabg please reply.

General Physician,
You take 1000 mg both times and add glimi 1 mg in the morning and inform privately. Watch for hypoglycemia and carry some sugar /glucose in case of hypoglycemia. It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose? smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take.

General Physician,
Gestational hypertension leads to 57% increased risk of calcification

Gestational hypertension normally resolves following birth, and blood pressure returns to normal. But women with elevated blood pressure during pregnancy are at higher risk of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Sabour and colleagues evaluated 491 healthy postmenopausal women selected from participants enrolled in the PROSPECT (Predictors of Response to Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy) study from 1993?1997. Women with a history of gestational hypertension had an almost 60% increased risk of having coronary calcification several decades later compared with women who had normal blood pressure during pregnancy. The relationship held for women who had mild elevations in blood pressure during pregnancy as well as for those who developed preeclampsia ? a more serious complication of pregnancy characterized by very high blood pressure, edema, and risk of organ damage.

Thyroid dysfunction may cause hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or goiter. Diet has no effect on the above two types of thyroid however children living in goiter prone areas should eat iodised salt in their diet.

Hi, Is there any Permanent Cure for diabetes. In 49 years old suffering since June 2011.

MBBS, MRCGP ( UK), D Diab (UK)
Endocrinologist, Hyderabad
Hi, Is there any Permanent Cure for diabetes. In 49 years old suffering since June 2011.
Hello, There has been no permanent cure found yet for diabetes. But it can be adequately controlled by following a proper diet, exercise and taking your medicines as prescribed. Get your FBG and PPBG and HbA1C checked every 3 months. Get your retinal check, foot checks, kidney function tests, urine albuin creatinine ration and serum lipids checked atleast once a year. These tests will identify any complications of diabetes sooner and if found they can be managed earlier. Hope this helps you Thank you.

DNB (Pediatrics), MBBS
Pediatrician,
There is no cure for diabetes as of today in medical science. What we can do is control the disease so that the complications can be minimized. Drugs used for that are tailored to each patient's needs.

Is it good to use honey instead of sugar or does it have the same effects. I read the article about how quitting sugar is good for the body. I do consume honey and jaggery with tea and coffee often. Please advice.

sugar and jaggery both are absolutely same, only difference being one is white and the other is yellow/brown etc. Both are made from sugar cane juice. Sugar contains one molecule of glucose + one molecule of fructose. Similarly honey contains mainly fructose, this has a different metabolic route in the body, does not increase blood sugar directly, but it adds to building up of triglycerides. Fructose after absorption gose to liver and is converted to triglycerides. So excess fructose is not advisable.

My dad its RMD (gutkha) he had an diabetic (sugar) does it RMD harmful for him or not?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

My dad its RMD (gutkha) he had an diabetic (sugar) does it RMD harmful for him or not?
Mr. lybrate-user, Gutka is bad for everybody, more so for a person with diabetes. Even in normal person it is associated with conditions like fibroscitis, where cheek muscles harden and opening the mouth becomes difficult. Plus there are a large number of oral and tongue cancers reported in people consuming gutka. In a diabetic person generally immune system is a bit vulnerable, so gutka can cause serious damage. Thanks.
