I am 28 years old i am suffering from diabetes since from five years. People are telling that for diabetic sex is a question. Is it true but now I think i am ok in sex. But in future there will be any problem. If it true what I must do for avoding that?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
You can have sex, no problem, if your diabetes is not properly controlled you will have lot of problems along with sexual problems. It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose? smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance.

I like sweets wery much Please tell me How to maintain sugar level from the younger age?

Please tell me How to maintain sugar level from the younger age?
Mr. Lybrate-user, there is nothing wrong in liking sweets and even eating them. Diabetes does not coe because of eating sweets, but due to deficiency of insulin or resistance to its action or both, particularly in t2 diabetes. T1 diabetes occurs in those whose pancreas (beta cells) do not produce any insulin. One needs to be more careful if parent have t2 dm, as chances of getting diabetes increase very much. Few things need to be done to prevent getting t2 dm like: regular exercise daily for more than 1 hour, maintaining normal weight, consuming healthy diet, more green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Avoiding deep fried foods, junk foods, aerated sweetened drinks, fructose corn syrup containing products, highly processed foods, high fat milk products. Also refraining from alcohol and smoking. Basically maintaing a healthy lifestyle is necessary.

You cut down the blood sugar levels in many ways. The first method is with exercise. Make exercise your habit and do it for at least 30 minutes per day. Yoga meditation aerobics walking cycling jogging dancing etc all includes in the category of exercise. Now with the dietary requirements you need to have a good idea that what all foods are essential to you at your this condition. According to me, I suggest my patients a dietary plan. You can also follow the same. *have dinner as early as possible. *restrict intake of rice preparations for dinner. *include fruits into your diet especially pomegranate dates dry grapes juice. *strict stop smoking and alcohol intake. *follow a regular diet weekly. *restrict intake of non veg daily. *have oats with milk daily once. *have food prepared with millets and wheat. If possible you could also follow some natural remedies. Some of them are *intake of gooseberry juice with turmeric powder after your breakfast. *intake of water boiled with the stem of tinospora cordifolia. (instantly decreases the blood sugar levels) *have cucumber juice in empty stomach. Last not least make up your mind. Build confidence and trust in your own actions that you can completely overcome this diabetes. All the best.

Loose your extra weight this will not only lower your blood but also helps lowering your blood pressure, cholesterol too. Split your meals into 6 times per day and eating fair and consistent amount. No long gapes and skipping of meals. Never miss out breakfast. No overeating. Timely and balanced diet is as important as regular medicine intake to control diabetes. Complex carbohydrates and fibre should be included in diet. Do regular exercise atleast 15 minutes.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It would have been better if you had given details about blood glucose levels,(fasting & PP, after initiating the treatment) and HbA1c%,Plus BP readings, Lipid profile. Your BMI is 26.78 kgs/M2, showing overweight. It is necessary to reduce the weight for better blood glucose control. Weight reduction will also help in reducing the acidity. Taking a PPI if needed can be continued. Thanks.

He is suffering with diabetes and don't want to leave sweets. How can I manage the things? Please help me.
the reason sweets should be avoided in diabetes is intake will increase blood sugar straight away. High blood sugar causes multiple problems affecting eyes (retina), small and large blood vessels, kidneys, heart, legs and feet (ulcers not healing, leading to amputation), severe neuropathic pain etc. Plus sweets also contain high fat content, increases caloric intake and may lead to weight increase. So if one has diabetes then there is no option but has to stop eating sweets. You have to convince him and impress that sweets will cause serious problem in the course of the disease. Another possibility is to use sucralose in stead of sugar while making sweets. But still gheee will be plenty.

Hi when we have hypo thyrodism can we have spinach in our diet? As it is rich in protein?

Hi when we have hypo thyrodism can we have spinach in our diet? As it is rich in protein?
Lybrate-user, spinach is not very rich in protein, a small cup of spinach gives about 1 g of protein. Raw vegetables contain fiber, vitamins (b complex, vit c etc) and some protein and fat. Water content is very high. In hypothyroidism it can be consumed. Thanks.

Hi after thyroidectomy the reason for decreased calcium is mainly due to parathyroid dysfunction. After surgery due to handling of thyroid gland there can be dysfunction for some time but the function is regained after some months. Do keep doing serum calcium levels every now and then. Consult an endocrinologist if required. Regards.

Mr. Lybrate-user, according to your information he is on 100 mcg of thyroxine and now the tsh value is 129.4 is that correct? what are the symptoms he has related to hypothyroidism? because with such high tsh he may be having a lot discomfort. If the results (values) are correct, then there has to be a substantial increase in the dose.

I am diabetes type 1 patient since 2010 taking 8 to 10 units dose 3 times a day and also thyronorm 100. My age is 32....
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Diabetes particularly T1 occurs due to absolute absence of Insulin secretion form your Islets of Langerhans gland in Pancreas. Since there is no insulin production, it has to be supplied from outside for blood glucose control as well as for survival of the patient. This disease can only be controlled that too by taking Insulin regularly. THERE IS NO CURE. Similarly Hypothyroidism is also a hormone deficiency disease, hence that also can only be controlled, there is no cure in that too. Another important aspect to be free from all the symptoms of hypothyroidism you will have to maintain TSH levels between 3 to 4 mU/L. Thanks.
