Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You have mentioned your mri findings which is ok but actually it does not correspond to your thigh weakness because thigh nerves are at a higher level. In order to answer your question in a better manner, may I advise you to get: 1) a detailed neurological (motor, sensory, deep tendon reflexes) charting done by a trained physical therapist 2) your mri images and reports in an attachment also please tell me duration of your back pain and mode of onset. I would also like to ask you if it is associated with any leg pain or any other neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias (electrical shock like abnormal sensations) or any weakness in limbs. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Thanks for the query. For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - Have small frequent meals. Do not fast for long hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Stay active. Right now you can still do some exercises that doesn't need to pressure your knees. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

For leg pain try this. Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. This will relieve your problem. Identify the mid point between the ankle bone and tendons and give pressure with a blunt edge on either side of your foot for 2 minutes. Hi If you have localized back pain with - no neurological symptoms like numbness, paresthesia, weakness in limbs etc, my advice is: - intensive physical therapy initially under supervision of a physiotherapist and then at home. - avoid forward bending, lifting heavy weights etc - take an analgesic like diclofenac or something which suits your body for 5-7 days - take muscle relaxant for same time as analgesic to relieve muscle spasm - ice packs at the site of pain, muscle spasm - local analgesic spray can be used but no massage is required let me know how you are feeling. I will actually ask you to get x ray of involved region of spine ( ap & lateral) and send reports across to me so that I can advise further in a better manner. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance

What medicine is suitable for osteo arthritis?

DNB (Orthopedics), Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), MBBS
Orthopedic Surgeon,
You have to take pain medicines for reducing pain and swelling. But taking medicines continuously is not so good as well. Do regular walking and exercises to keep the joints supple and active. East fresh fruits and vegetables. Maintain your weight. If pain is severe consider joint replacement surgery.

Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Most of your conditions needs attention from a general physician/diabetologist but I can advise you regarding your knee pain. Even your foot swelling probably does not have a musculoskeletal cause, but still I can tell you that persistent swelling in foot region can be due to deranged kft, lft, thyroid profile and issues with heart. Sometimes even chronic protein deficiency can lead to persistent foot swelling. Looking at your age, I would think that if there are no external s/s of inflammation, then knee pain would be due to degenerative changes setting in the joint. Please catch hold of a good physical therapist and do intensive knee - quadriceps and hamstring ex, avoid sitting cross legged and squatting, use a western toilet etc - take adequate calcium and vitamin d as per your body's requirement - daily walks for 2-3 km per day in morning should help you. You can take a short course of a safe anti-inflammatory medication - hot fomentation at home 3-4 times in a day might also help in your knee pain but mainstay remains exercises please send me both knee ( ap & lateral) x rays so that I can see and advise you accordingly. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

I am a arthritis (RA) patient for last few years and tried all type of medicines. The pain reduces when I keep taking the medicines and restarts after few days if I stop them. Now I have the knee joint pains on both joints, and also pain in my hand fingers. I also have a pain in my lower back. I have consulted the doctor and he says it is a muscle pain only. But the pain is not reducing for last few months. Please suggest if there are any good medicines in the ayurveda which can help me in the above problems.

Ayurveda can help reduce the pain which will be reduced even after completing the course. You will have to take medicines for at least 6 months. Contact me privately for the same. Till then, use hot fomentation on all joints to relieve the pain. Have lighter, easy to digest meals. Stay away from cold foods & weather.
