My pulse is 84 since one month. Temperature is normal. What is the possible reason. I feel body pain.

Thyroid function (tsh) and an ecg should be checked. Sometimes worry alone may be the cause. Pain sensations may be more in both of these conditions.

Dear Doctor, From last few months I am feeling that I got addicted with alcohol, my daily consumption increase by 200 to 300 ML. Please suggest me.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Set a drinking goal. Choose a limit for how much you will drink. Make sure your limit is not more than one drink a day if you’re a woman, or two drinks a day if you’re a man. Now write your drinking goal on a piece of paper. Put it where you can see it, such as on your refrigerator or bathroom mirror. Keep a "diary" of your drinking. To help you reach your goal, keep a "diary" of your drinking. For example, write down every time you have a drink for 1 week. Try to keep your diary for 3 or 4 weeks. This will show you how much you drink and when. You may be surprised. How different is your goal from the amount you drink now? Watch it at home. Keep a small amount or no alcohol at home. Don't keep temptations around. Drink slowly. When you drink, sip your drink slowly. Take a break of one hour between drinks. Drink soda, water, or juice after a drink with alcohol. Do not drink on an empty stomach! Eat food when you are drinking. Take a break from alcohol. Pick a day or two each week when you will not drink at all. Then, try to stop drinking for one week. Think about how you feel physically and emotionally on these days. When you succeed and feel better, you may find it easier to cut down for good.

I sweat alot and it stinks very bad. I put deo also. I feel very depressed I am a girl I want to get rid of this problem.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
You haven't mentioned your age. Try grooming your body with body shampoo after bath, and get clean shaven. Use long lasting perfume rather than deo, as perfumes are more concentrated and stronger. Make sure you are not allergic to them by 1st spraying over a small part. Get hormonal tests like thyroid and other, to rule out medical reasons, if any. Enjoy your body smell, some males get attracted to them.

I am 21 years old male I am suffering from panic attack, stress and fear from last 3 year what should I do? I also have fear of heart attack.

PGDAP, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Gurgaon
The remedy for panick attack is not magical, it is a slow process. The slow exposure to the fearful thing followed by increased exposure is done to reduce the panic, but it can be done only by a trained professional. Or the other way is to take some mild medications.

My father is addicted to alcohol, what can I do for him to get rid from alcoholic ness of my father.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
There are no guarantees about stopping one?s addiction. But that does not mean we should not keep at it, over and over again until we succeed. Now it is difficult to give up all by himself because he has become addicted to alcohol and there is so much to do. Under such circumstances it is best that you admit him into a de-addiction center and let him stay there for at least 6 months and after that he can attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving and to act as an antabuse i.e. he will have a serious reaction, if he consumes even a small quantity of alcohol or alcohol based substances. It has to be carefully monitored to see that he not only consumes the medication but is also avoiding alcohol. Ultimately, it is his will power and the support that he receives from the medical fraternity and his close and dear ones. He must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course take a look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ?cross addictions? i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide him on several measures and precautions he will need to take to stay with his resolve. Even after the rehabilitation he must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. The family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. He cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to his drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. The children will also have to attend meetings to work out their issues because of the father?s habit. In fact, they are all suffering from the Adult Children Of Alcoholics Syndrome (ACOAs), which in effect means that they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or can have cross addiction problems, and that they will have similar traits of the abusing alcoholic but in a milder form. There are special support groups for them all over the world. Should they touch or indulge in alcohol or any addictive substances or behaviors, they could also become full-fledged addicts themselves. Make a serious plan with whoever else?s support he can get and act on it fast. If he is not cooperative, there are some centers that will come and pick him up, after he is completely drunk, and admit his by force. This will however, require the wife and family?s consent.

The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated. Masturbation is a very healthy form of sexual outlet, do not feel guilty about it. Nearly 99% of men and more than 60% of women masturbate. It starts from adolescence and goes on in some people even till death. The pleasure (orgasm) from masturbation is said to be unique from sexual intercourse. In men, most of the liquid contains only water and some fructose and hormones. Hence it does not drain your energy. Many equate masturbation/ seminal fluid loss to lack of energy, impotency and so on. Many quacks, religious heads and pseudo healers also propagate the idea that masturbation is a disorder/ and wrongful behavior and instil fear on the mind of innocent men and women (we can see posters in train and bus stand, offering help for this behavior). Consult a psychiatrist, if you have excessive masturbation guilt or compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation is when a person continues with frequent masturbation neglecting his/ her other work like education, job or social obligations. In fact masturbation reduces the sexual tension and helps focus on task at hand better.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

Dear, quitting porn addiction is not child play. De-addiction therapy is an option for you. But in my suggestion, the best option would be, quit it now (today) and sustain it with your will power. Motivation therapy and mind power building therapy should help you.

I am 26 years old male, and have been suffering from severe depression for the last 6 months. I am feeling low all the time and I am unable to focus on things that I care about. Is there any medication that could help in easing my depression, at least a bit?

M.S. Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Bangalore
Certainly, there are medicines to get relief from depressive mood. It would be better if you consult a counsellor/pscchologist/psychiatrist. You need proper assessment, to decide the intensity of your depression. Based on that medication is decided. Along with medication, you may try some therapy sessions with the counsellor. You need to find out what is causing this depressive/sad feeling and how you can control it buy modifying you thoughts, feelings and behavior. Once you are able to manage your feelings, you will be able to concentrate more on things which are important for you.
