How To Improve Lung Capacity?

MBBS, DNB - Respiratory Medicine
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
How To Improve Lung Capacity?

Lung capacity (or total lung capacity) refers to the total volume of air contained in the lungs after one complete inhalation and is a direct summation of your respiratory capacity and residual capacity (the amount you inhale and the amount your lungs can keep). A diminished lung capacity can stem from a number of conditions such as asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, or from bad habits such as excessive smokingThis, however, can be combated by a number of means.

1. Breathing exercises:

  • Deep breathing: Research has shown, that taking long deep breaths, which basically encompasses inhaling for as long as possible and holding your breath for about 15-20 seconds can work wonders in increasing lung capacity if it can be carried out several times a day.
  • Splashing water on your face: Splashing water on your face while holding breath lowers the heart rate, and prepares the body in the same way as if you were about to go swimming. This will automatically increase your lung's capacity to hold air.
  • Try meditation: Closing your eyes and meditating for long periods may also prove to be beneficial. The lesser the amount of energy that you expend, the more air the lungs can hold.

2. Physical exercises:

  • Engage in rigorous cardiovascular activities: Increased cardiovascular exercising, including aerobics, running, cycling is very useful, as it pushes your body to exhaustion, thus forcing your lungs to work harder - in turn, increasing its capacity.
  • Increase water-based exercises: Swimming or exercising in water is very beneficial for the body as it adds an element of resistance to your training regime and overworks your lungs to supply enough oxygen, making them work better.
  • Try exercising at higher elevations: This often works as a foolproof way of increasing lung capacity. Higher altitudes have lower oxygen supply. Thus, overworking your lungs by engaging in intense workouts can be very beneficial for your lungs.

3. Long-term training exercises:

  • Increase your resistance: Breathe in high quantities of air, and take time before releasing it completely and do it very slowly. This forces your lungs to hold air longer, thus stretching them out.
  • Overwork your brain: Try to breathe in extra - more than what you normally do. This forces your brain to work overtime to make sure that the lungs have the capacity to take in that excess air. This will greatly increase lung capacity in the long run.

It appears that probably you had post delivery depression after the birth of your 2nd child, which was not treated. You also might be having lots of sadness and grief which did not get any outlet, and hence, become more intese now. This is the reason you feel like crying all the time. I guess you have ptsd - post traumatic stress disorder. You might have experienced or heard about some traumatic events like, accidents, earthquakes, tsunami etc which were very devastating. As a child it affecred your mind and has left a strong impact on you. Probably you are very scared of losing someone close to you. You might be afraid of death. All this together is causing your anxiety and sadness. Please continue with the medication as the doctor's advice. Also take an appointment with a counsellor. Relieving your painful emotions which are suppressed till not will help you a lot.

Can you please suggest me how to quit cigrate. Due to cigrate am geetin problem in my chest.

MBBS
General Physician, Fatehabad
Hi lybrate-user, There are a variety of herbs and supplements that can help people stop smoking. Rhodiola extract in the mornings can increase dopamine receptors. Dopamine is a hormone associated with mood. Too little dopamine can lead to anxiety and depression. Increasing dopamine receptors and uptake can make people feel happier, more energetic and less like smoking a cigarette. People often feel nauseated when they are in withdrawal from nicotine. Ginger root may reduce nausea. Lobelia can be toxic so caution is needed when using. 1. Oats Oats are a heart healthy food that is high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, potassium, and folate. Eating oats can help lower levels of bad cholesterol and keep arteries clear, which helps to lower risk of heart disease. They also contain chemicals called avenathramides that can reduce stress, strengthen the nervous system, fight free radials, and combat high blood pressure. All of these benefits can be crucial for smokers who are at a higher risk for heart disease. Oats can also directly help smokers quit. An extract derived from green oats can ease withdrawal symptoms and help to decrease cigarette cravings. 2. Herbal Cigarettes: Herbal cigarettes can replace regular cigarettes and help break the addiction. Smokers become used to reaching for a cigarette in certain situations and at specific times during the day. Sometimes a cigarette is about familiarity or comfort more than nicotine. Herbal cigarettes contain fewer chemicals and carcinogens in regular cigarettes. People can substitute herbal cigarettes to meet their psychological need for a smoke without compromising their health. The main benefits of herbal cigarettes are that they are not additive. These cigarettes contain zero nicotine. They are made with herbs such as mint, cinnamon, clover, cornsilk, licorice or lemongrass. They also have some carcinogens so they should only be used as a short-term aide to break the nicotine habit and not long-term. 3. Garcinia Cambogia: This herb is very good for chain smokers. It suppresses the desire of smoking in the smokers. This herb also helps to lower the body weight as it contains hydroxycitric acid which has very good fat burning properties. 4. Mimosa - Mimosa is a non-addictive herb which gives relief from the anxiety and stress that comes after quitting smoking. Some of the people start smoking again after quitting it as they face lot of fatigue and anxiety afterwards. 5. Korean Ginseng is a natural herb to stop stress and anxiety. This herb can be taken in the form of capsule or tincture. It gives calming and soothing effect to the body and helps the people to fight with the depression that occurs after giving up smoking. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Your weight gain may be related to emotional eating. If so I suggest that you go for counseling to learn to handle your emotions appropriately. Apart from that you need to increase your metabolic rate through exercise: ideally the aerobic kind and at least half an hour of vigorous levels. Reduce your intake of fried foods and high carbohydrates. Eat a lot of high fiber in the form of vegetables and fruits. Cut down on sugar and sweets. Eat a good breakfast, a smaller lunch and a very small helping for dinner. Have your dinner before 8 pm every day. Before every meal have a cucumber and drink a glass of water. Drink a lot of water during the day anyway. There is a very good health supplement which helps you reduce your weight without any side-effects and is very nutritious. You will need to contact me for that food supplement.
