Hello Dr, What are all the health benefits in pomegranate especially pregnant ladies. Thank you.

MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
Hello Dr,
What are all the health benefits in pomegranate especially pregnant ladies.
Thank you.
Pomegranates contain a number of phytochemical compounds, which have been proven to be good for your heart. They may help lower blood pressure, which is great news if you’re in the later stages of pregnancy or suffering from pre-eclampsia when your blood pressure is likely to be elevated. Rich in vitamin C, pomegranates are excellent for the immune system and when your body is busy growing your baby, it needs all the extra immunity it can get. Studies have shown that eating pomegranate has a positive effect on bone health and density – perfect for giving your developing baby a boost. Pomegranates contain more antioxidants than cranberries and green tea, making them ideal for all-round health and nutrition. Many skincare products contain pomegranate juice. Its oils penetrate deeply into the skin so it helps to combat dryness, breakouts and promote healthy cell regeneration.

Aloe Vera: The Amazing Plant

MD- Ayurvedic Pathology

Aloe Vera: The Amazing Plant

Aloe vera is one of the most popular medicinal plants that have been in use for thousands of years. It is particularly famous for the treatment of skin injuries although it offers a host of health benefits. This short stemmed shiny plant stores moisture in its leaves and is widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. The gel within the aloe vera stem contains bioactive compounds found in plants such as vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids.

Some of the notable health benefits of aloe vera include the following:

  • It contains antibacterial and antioxidant properties: aloe vera is known to contain the most beneficial antioxidants called as polyphenols. These polyphenols, as well as other similar compounds found on aloe vera, can prevent the growth of bacterial infections in human beings.
  • Helps in healing cuts and burns: aloe vera can also be used as a topical medicine by applying the gel on the skin. It has been used since ancient times for the treatment of sores, cuts and burns which also includes sunburns. Aloe vera is the first fda approved ointment that got the status of an effective over-the-counter medication in the year 1959. It can, therefore, be used in first and even second degree burns.
  • Prevents dental plaque: tooth decay, as well as gum diseases, affect almost all individuals over the world. One of the best ways to steer clear of the oral infections is to prevent plaque buildup which is the bacterial biofilms on the teeth. The aloe vera mouthwash is as effective as chlorhexidine solutions in reducing the problems of dental plaque by killing the harmful yeast called candida albicans and bacterium named streptococcus mutans.
  • Aids in the treatment of canker sores: most people have experienced mouth ulcers or canker sores at least once in their lifetime. It mostly affects the area underneath the lip or inside the mouth and can be very painful at times. Several studies show that aloe vera gel helps in accelerating the healing process of canker sores.
  • Reduces constipation: the latex of aloe vera has been found beneficial in the treatment of constipation. The latex is the sticky yellow residue underneath the leaf skin and contains aloin and barbaloin which offers effective latex effect.
  • Prevent formation of wrinkles: topical aloe vera gel assists in slowing down the ageing process with regular usage. Using aloe vera gel regularly helps in boosting the production of collagen and improves skin elasticity within three months of regular usage.
  • Lowers down blood sugar levels: there was a time when aloe vera was used as a conventional remedy for diabetes. Aloe vera helps in enhancing insulin sensitivity as well as managing blood sugar levels. It has been used in numerous animals and humans affected with type 2 diabetes and the results are impressive enough to regard it as an alternative treatment option.

Along with these benefits, aloe vera juice is regarded as a sustainable way of weight management which has made it a well-favoured choice of overweight people all over the world.

Doctor me and my wife want normal delivery rather than caesarean delivery as caesarean delivery is so painful and it causes problems for future. So please guide us what should we follow. And the main question I want to ask is that should my wife take protein powder and all those related to this? Why I am asking this is if our child gets healthier inside her belly so at the time of delivery will any problem arise and will it leads to caesarean delivery, which we don't want. Should she take protein powder etc. Or not. Now she is continuing her 7th month of pregnancy. Kindly suggest us.

Doctor me and my wife want normal delivery rather than caesarean delivery as caesarean delivery is so painful and it ...
please allow her to take a nutritious diet so that mother and baby are both strong. it's a wrong concept that protein will make the baby heavy and normal delivery difficult. your doctor, I am sure will opt for the wait and watch policy. But there is not too much in your hands except for asking your doctor not to rush into CS. Other than that, you will have to keep faith in the doctor 's clinical judgement

Do some basic tests like hormonal tests for you to see the ovarian reserve and normal levels, tubal patency test, an a routine usg to rule out any pelvic structural problems. Your husband should have a semen analysis done. Subject to the reports you can try iui for some cycles or try ivf if the ovarian reserve is less.

Do a urine pregnancy test to confirm whether she is pregnant or not. If she is not pregnant then the menstrual irregularities can be a part of hormonal imbalance, peri menopausal symptoms or any other problem of the female reproductive tract. In that case consult a gynaecologist for examination and evaluation. Ongoing medications have in role in menstrual problem.

ARE YOU WALKING AROUND WITH FRAGILE BONES?

MBBS, MS, DNB, FNB (SPINE SURGERY)
Orthopedist, Chennai
ARE YOU WALKING AROUND WITH FRAGILE BONES?
ARE YOU AT HIGH RISK OF DEVELOPING A FRACTURE IN YOUR SPINE OR HIP? Read on to know more about OSTEOPOROSIS.
There is another silently progressing, common disease other than diabetes and hypertension that can cause potentially serious risk to your health in old age. Osteoporosis meaning “porous bones” indicates a condition where your bones become more porous, thinner and weaker due to accelerated loss of bone or reduced bone formation or both. It is most evident in the vertebrae of spine, hip bones and in the wrists.
Thin and porous vertebrae fracture easily. They crumble on their own or due to minor stresses during daily activities like coughing, sneezing, bending forwards. These fractures can be painless and go unnoticed in multiple levels till the spine develops a forward bend and a noticeable loss of height. Or it can cause significant pain and disability, limitation in daily activities and increased dependence on others. A simple slip and fall at home can cause a fracture in the hip bones that can make the patient completely bed ridden. These situations commonly cause depression and general deterioration of health and leads to other risky complications in old age.
Though it is most common women after menopause, it also happens in men above age of 65 years and in those with certain risk factors like liver or kidney disease, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, and certain tumours. Smoking has been proven to cause osteoporosis. Long term steroid intake given for various conditions and medications given for seizure disorders also can cause osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis can be detected easily by a screening test called the DEXA scan. Any one above the age of 50 years should consult an orthopaedic surgeon to know if they are at risk of osteoporosis and whether he/she needs a DEXA scan. If the DEXA scan reveals that you have osteoporosis, you must be evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon and an endocrinologist to look for other treatable conditions that can cause osteoporosis. There are medications that are prescribed to strengthen the bones and reduce the risk of fractures in future. Diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and supplementary calcium and vitamin D medications are also an essential part of treatment.
Although the vertebral osteoporotic fractures commonly heal in a few weeks with bed rest and medications, some of them may not heal in time or cause severe pain and disability. These patients might need surgical intervention. Vertebroplasty is a procedure that involves injection of bone cement into the broken vertebra and can give immediate pain relief. Kyphoplasty is a similar procedure that can restore the height of the fractured vertebral body and reduce the forward stoop in the spine. Open surgery might be required sometimes if the collapsed vertebra causes a compression of the spinal cord or nerves in the spine. Osteoporotic hip fractures and wrist fractures often need surgical treatment for fixation.
Prevention of osteoporosis should begin in childhood. Growing bones accumulate calcium and the calcium in bones reaches a peak at around age of 26 to 30 years. After that age, there is a slow decline in the bone calcium, which accelerates in old age especially in women after menopause. So those who reach a lower peak of calcium in bones by the age of 30 are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis in old age. This means that adequate intake of dietary calcium, vitamin D and adequate exercise from young age is very important to prevent osteoporosis.
Prevention of falls and resultant fractures in those who are osteoporotic is an important aspect of treatment. This needs modification of their living spaces to remove the risks of a slip and fall. Routine exercises and an active lifestyle load the bones and make them stronger and it is a must for all those with osteoporosis and those at risk of developing osteoporosis.

Tampons Vs. Sanitary Pads: How Does It Impact Your Vaginal Health?

Tampons Vs. Sanitary Pads: How Does It Impact Your Vaginal Health?

Menstruation is a reality of life for women. There are several options like pads, tampons, menstrual cups and panty liners to deal with menstruation. However, there is often a comparison between pads and tampons - as to which one is a better option. Here is an insight to guide you to what's better for you that also ensures your good vaginal health.

Comfort

Pads have been occupying the most favorite position among women since a long time and it's the best option if you have just started your period. Tampons are discreet and are the best option for swimmers and athletes as it allows greater freedom of movement. Both have been proven to provide efficient period protection but it really depends on your preference and comfort with a particular product.

Size and fragrance

Both pads and tampons come in various shapes and sizes suiting everyone's preferences. There are large, extra large and even pads with wings to cope with the intensity of flow. Both the products have fragrant variations to combat the pungent period smell.

Impact on vaginal health

The vaginal area harbors microorganisms which are needed to maintain its PH balance. Pads do not affect the PH level but the fragrance can cause irritation which is present in both the products. Pads and Tampons should be changed at regular intervals to avoid leakage or
infection. Pads do not have harmful effects on your vaginal health generally if you are not
allergic to the material which can cause skin rash. The impact of tampons on the vaginal health is a controversial topic.

Many studies show that tampons contain many chemicals to make them super absorbent, which are harmful. Small traces of dioxin are found which influences the reproductive tissue and immune system. Tampons have a tendency of absorbing everything including the microorganisms needed in the vagina to maintain its PH level.

Both tampons and pads have some impact on the vaginal health, but which one you choose really depends on your preference. It is advised to oversee their compatibility with the vaginal area before committing to any of them.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

Day 1 to day 7 and day 21 to rest of the cycle are known to be “safe days” or your “safe period”. The method is perfect only for women whose menstrual cycles are regular, i.e., 25 to 32 days cycles. This method is not completely reliable.
