Ovarian Cancer - Prevention is Better Than Cure

MBBS, M.S( Gynaecology)

Ovarian Cancer - Prevention is Better Than Cure

Ovarian cancer is the most common cancer to affect the female reproductive system. The exact cause of ovarian cancer is not yet known and the risk factors involved are numerous, the most prevalent of which are genetic defects and hereditary problems.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are not always clear and range from pelvic and abdominal pains to irregularities in the menstrual cycle. Women beyond the age of 50 are most at risk of developing this type of cancer and the risk factor increases in case of family history.

Prevention of  Ovarian Cancer

There is no sure shot way of preventing ovarian cancer. Some factors such as genetics cannot be controlled at all. There are, however, ways to take precaution against it through some simple lifestyle choices. A few of those ways are as follows:

Eat a healthy balanced diet which is rich in all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that the body requires for boosting and maintaining immunity.

Exercise regularly and stay active. Maintaining fitness is an important aspect of preventing the onset of all sorts of diseases and disorders.

Go for frequent health checkups and make regular consultations with your gynaecologist so as to ensure early detection of the problem.

Another notable way of avoiding ovarian cancer is taking birth control pills which are known to reduce the risk levels. However, studies have shown that there are other health risks associated with taking birth control pills and hence you should always consult a gynaecologist for a proper prescription.

I have a 2 year old baby I have stopped breast feeding her, but my nipples irritate me while we have sex or baby plays with it.

Dear lybrate-user. Thanks for the question. Your nipples can become irritated, sore, or even cracked due to friction. Running and sexual activity are sometimes causes of temporary nipple problems due to vigorous rubbing. A severe blow to your breast or unusual pressure on the chest can also cause nipple discharge. These are normal. Yet you could consult your gynecologist. Take care.

Feet Pain During Pregnancy - Tips to Deal With It!

Feet Pain During Pregnancy - Tips to Deal With It!

Pregnancy is a joyful time in a woman’s life. Yet, this is also a challenging time for the pregnant lady as it brings a lot aches and pains as well as swelling in various parts of the body. Back pain and foot pain are common occurrences during pregnancy. Leg cramps and pain in the feet are often experienced at night. This may be caused primarily due to lack of proper blood circulation in the feet and also due to the swelling that one experiences in this region.

Also, not getting enough rest is one of the main culprits of this condition. Let us find out how to deal with the same.

  1. Nutrition: This is one of the biggest factors that can go a long way in ensuring that you have a healthy pregnancy in general. But nutrition is also a major factor when it comes to preventing foot pain during pregnancy. When you indulge in proper nutrition with healthy ingredients, the various vitamins and minerals get absorbed in a proper manner within the body. Not only does this help in reducing the swelling and keeping it at bay, but it also helps in alleviating various aches and pains felt in various parts of the body, especially the feet. Magnesium supplements can also be prescribed in order to reduce the leg and foot pain during this time. You can also have magnesium-rich food like nuts, dry fruits, and seeds so that you get plenty of magnesium during your pregnancy.
  2. Rest: It is important to put your feet up, literally, more often that you would when you are not pregnant. Pregnancy can be an exhausting time, and it is important to give your body ample rest so that you do not suffer from stress responses that can give rise to spasms in various parts of the body – most notably, the feet and legs.
  3. Exercise: You must also exercise a little during this time, especially in the last trimester when foot pain becomes quite severe. This will help in reducing the cramping in the muscles, which can arise due to too much of inactivity. One of the best exercises involves pushing against the wall with one leg, and maintaining the position for about five seconds. While you are doing this, you will also need to lean forward and place your hands on the walls. You can try this a few times for each leg before taking a break.
  4. Weight: Your average pregnancy weight gain should not be more than 15 to 20 kilograms. Anything more than this will lead to severe pain in the back and legs. So monitor your weight to reduce foot pain significantly.

Pregnancy can occur only one day of cycle that is ovulation day so unprotected sex around that day only important. As only one day in month nature should be given 12-24 trials (12 to 24 months) before couple need any active management by Gynecologist or infertility specialist. However as she has delayed period so meet now.

Feeling Sleepy During The Day - Tips To Help You Deal With It!

MBBS, DCP
General Physician, Faridabad
Feeling Sleepy During The Day - Tips To Help You Deal With It!

You know how it feels when you are in the middle of an important presentation or a meeting and just can't keep your eyes open. You will often come across people who feel sleepy and drowsy throughout the day. Have you ever wondered why do you feel sleepy all the time? There must be some factors or health conditions that trigger this drowsiness. The condition is a serious matter that requires a thorough investigation.

What causes the drowsiness throughout the day?

  1. Sleep deprivation: One of the major and obvious reasons for feeling sleepy throughout the day can be a lack of sound sleep at night. The trigger could be insomnia or sleep apnea. You wake up feeling tired, sleepy and exhausted throughout the day.
  2. Depression: Depression, stress (personal as well as professional), anxiety can leave you physically as well as mentally exhausted. As a result, throughout the day you will feel tired and sleepy.
  3. Chronic Fatigue: This is a condition that can affect people even without them realizing it. A person with chronic fatigue will feel lethargic all the time. In addition to this, there will be muscular and joint ache, headache, lack of concentration. What is even worse, the exact trigger for this condition is not known.

You can also feel sleepy all the time due to certain disorders and medical conditions such as

  1. Anemia: Anemia, often resulting from an iron or vitamin deficiency can leave you feeling tired. In anemia, the RBCs will be present in reduced amount. The RBC's are responsible for the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the cells and tissues of the body. In the case of anemia, your hemoglobin level will be low causing weakness and drowsiness.
  2. Diabetes: The harmful effects of diabetes are not new. In diabetes, especially type-2, the body is unable to use the glucose (the concentration shoots up in the blood). In the absence of glucose which is the major source of energy, you will feel sleepy and exhausted.
  3. Thyroid problems: For your body to function properly, the thyroid hormones should be present in the recommended amount. Any deviation from the normal range can wreak havoc. In the case of the thyroid hormones produced below the normal range, medically termed as Hypothyroidism, the overall metabolic processes in the body slow down. As a result, you end up feeling drowsy and fatigued.

In some cases, dehydration and lack of physical activities can also make you sleepy all day.

How to deal with the situation?

  1. Lethargy and drowsiness can be effectively managed if you know the underlying factors responsible for the condition. In addition to the medical assistance and treatments,
  2. Follow a healthy sleep routine (Sleep early and wake up early). Make sure you sleep for 6-8 hours daily.
  3. Keep your body well hydrated. Drink water and fluids at short intervals.
  4. Maintain a healthy body weight.
  5. Avoid getting over stressed. Meditate and exercise regularly without fail.
  6. Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Physician.

Is there any hygienic issue for putting penies in mouth? Is it leads to pregnancy?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology

Dear user. Oral sex is not conventional. Penis skin and beneath foreskin could contain many germs which could cause many diseases to the other person who takes your penis inside his / her mouth. If you can clean your penis 100% then you can opt for oral sex. Otherwise please avoid it. Oral sex cannot cause pregnancy. Take care.

General Physician,
Women's health: Prevent the top threats

The biggest threats to women's health are often preventable. Here's what you need to know to live a longer, healthier life.
Many of the leading threats to women's health can be prevented ? if you know how. The top causes of death among adult women in the U.S. Include heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Take the first step to protect yourself by talking with your doctor about your risk factors for these conditions. Then get serious about reducing your risk.

Manage chronic conditions and get recommended screenings

If you have health problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes, that increase your risk of heart disease and stroke, follow your doctor's treatment recommendations. Also be sure to consult your doctor about when you should have mammograms and other cancer screenings.

Adopt a healthier lifestyle

While you can't eliminate risk factors such as family history, you can control many other risk factors for heart disease, stroke and cancer. For example:

Don't smoke. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, ask your doctor to help you quit. It's also important to avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
Eat a healthy diet. Choose vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fiber foods and lean sources of protein, such as fish. Limit foods high in saturated fat, added sugar and sodium.
Maintain a healthy weight. Losing excess pounds ? and keeping them off ? can lower your risk of heart disease as well as various types of cancer.
Get moving. Include physical activity in your daily routine. You know exercise can help you control your weight and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. But did you know that it may also lower your risk of certain types of cancer? Choose activities you enjoy, from brisk walking to ballroom dancing.
Limit alcohol. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. For women that means no more than one drink a day. The risk of various types of cancer ? including breast and liver ? appears to increase with the amount of alcohol you drink and the length of time you've been drinking regularly.
Manage stress. If you feel constantly on edge or under assault, your lifestyle habits may suffer ? and so might your immune system. Take steps to reduce stress ? or learn to deal with stress in healthy ways.
Prevent chronic lower respiratory diseases

Many women don't realize that they're at risk of illness and even death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ? which includes bronchitis and emphysema. Don't be caught off guard. To protect your respiratory health:

Don't smoke. If you smoke, ask your doctor to help you quit. Also avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
Steer clear of pollutants. Minimize exposure to chemicals and outdoor air pollution.
Prevent respiratory infections. Wash your hands often and get a yearly flu vaccine. Ask your doctor whether you need a pneumonia vaccine as well.
The bottom line

It's important to understand the common health risks that women face, but don't feel intimidated. Instead, do whatever you can to lead a healthy lifestyle ? including eating a healthy diet, staying physically active, quitting smoking and getting regular checkups. Simple preventive measures can go a long way toward reducing your health risks.
