Dear lybrate-user, time to visit your doctor. Your sugar and bp both are uncontrolled. If they remain so, it's going to have long term consequences. You need to up your medication. After examining you your doctor may make a proper plan. Besides rigorous diet and exercise program should complement your medication.

One of the complications of imbalance in thyroid hormones is hair loss. Once you get your treatment to regulate thyroid hormone levels, the hair loss problem should resolve by itself. Besides, you can also do a few things to deal with thyroid induced hair loss.

Sir/madam, I am the diabetic patient can I use lemon with, watermelon, cheese and patica bellam (like a sweet item).

B.Sc.- Food & Nutrition, M.Sc- Food Science & Nutrition, NET (LS)
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Kolkata
Sir/madam, I am the diabetic patient can I use lemon with, watermelon, cheese and patica bellam (like a sweet item).
Lemon can be used with all these items. Since you are diabetic, restrict the watermelon intake to 2-3 pcs only in between main meals. Avoid fruit consumption with main meals. Cheese consumption should be occasional as its fat content is very high. Home made channa/ paneer is a better alternative to cheese. Sweets/sugar/honey/jaggery/sago should be avoided. Sweet fruits like dates/banana/watermelon/jackfruit are a better alternative in small portions.

What are the precautions for a pregnant lady having diabetes.?

CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology, MBBS
Endocrinologist,
What are the precautions for a pregnant lady having diabetes.?
Please let me know if the person is already a diabetic and then has become pregnant or during the course of pregnancy she has developed it. Whatever may be the situation, it is important to maintain blood glucose level between 90 - 120 mg / 100ml at any time. So patient has to be on insulin injection. Strict sugar control is a must to avoid all the complications of diabetes in pregnancy. Proper diet and to meet increased needs of the mother and baby plus correct dose of insulin are the major things to be concentrated.

For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in fat and high in fibre. Avoid bakery products. Avoid too much rice and potato. Avoid fried stuff. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. Medicine and insulin will work better if you follow diet and exercise. Check your blood sugar both in fasting and 2 hours after meal.

My blood glucose
is 118. Do I need medication? last month it was 132.
The value you have mentioned is of fasting or after eating? You can control your blood sugar through light exercises (sp. brisk walking), proper intake of diet and don't take much stress/ tension/ anxiety, etc. No need to go for medication.

How often should I visit you for checkups in order to stay as healthy as possible and avoid diabetic complications?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

How often should I visit you for checkups in order to stay as healthy as possible and avoid diabetic complications?
Mr. Lybrate-user, visiting a doctor often is not required, what is needed is to follow instructions and treatment advised by him. For a diabetes patient following few things are important: 1) take all the prescribed drugs reguarly as advised, do not stop or change on your own or listening to unprofessional advise. 2) take restricted diet again as advised by the physician, in diabetes the dictum is" no feasting or no fasting" 3) consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (100 ga day). 4) always use whole grain products, do not use refined flours, highly processed foods, junk foods, sweets, sweetened aerated drinks and pastries. 5) avoid alcohol and smoking 6) exercise daily for at least 1 hour, brisk walk is a good option. Joining a gym also is good. Plus a periodic check up of blood sugar is necessary. If you have t1 diabetes then insulin is the only option in such a situation blood glucose testing is to be done more often. Initially vists to doctor may be more often.
