Hi, I am a regular runner and I make sure 1 hour of my day is spend outdoor and active. I jo 3 km daily, toe jogging. In July I got a sprain and since then I am staying away from jog or any physical activity that pressure my sprained ankle, rigt leg. Can I do household chores, will it cause more pressure on my ankle. How long will it take to heal. My doctor examined and said it might be a muscle tear. What could I do to recover faster. Please advice. Female, 27.

Good to know that you have an active routine. I wonder why you are doing 'Toe jogging' It does not help at all. Just run naturally. Your injury will heal in 3-4 weeks. Give it rest. Don't worry about labels like 'muscle tear' etc. Everything will heal. You don't have to stop completely, but your pain will indicate where to stop. Take extra Calcium and Vit D. Take more milk and milk products. Women are prone to Osteoporosis, though you are still young for that. However its better to take precautions. You can consult a Homeopath. They have good meds for such injuries. Take care and you will be back on the track soon.

Hello Do proper rest & do hot fomentation for 15-20 min thrice in a day .Take UST followed by IFT for 15 days. Learn strengthening & stretching exercises from physiotherapist. This will help in reducing the pain. Thanks.

Hello lybrate user, if you are still on medications for problems you have mentioned better go through only external care for your lower back like - apply ksheerabala taila/ dhanwantara taila and keep hot water bag over there for 15min which will relive you from back pain and strengthen your back bones as such. There might be a muscle tear. Can happen due to faulty warmup stretching exercises or due to over exertion. For the relief apply ice packs. Bhujang Asana – Lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily.

I am suffering from spondylitis for the last 3 years. During this period on three occasions, I suffered giddiness and was not able to move from bed. I was treated with betavert 16. Now I am ok to some extend. My doctor advised me to have traction. Is it safe? any relationship between giddiness and spondylitis. Kindly help and advise.

Traction is absolutely safe. Its to maintain inter vertebral space to keep the nerves from undue pressure which is caused by reduction in spaces or development of osteophytes etc. Vessels are also compressed. Because of compression in vertebral column, the blood supply to brain is also lowered sometimes thereby causing giddiness. When you lie down blood supply to brain is restored. Similarly pressure on nerves makes life tough.

Avoid sitting Cross legged. Avoid Squatting- Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports Taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area Contrast Fomentation (Hot and Cold).

surgery is not the first choice, if presently if pain is acute. just take rest laying on hard surface Even floor etc.. Doing yoga esp bhujangasana regularly at lest for 5 mints will help you to reduce the pain as well as the disc bulge. Along with bhujangasana, if you do ardha shalabhasana with each leg for 5 mints & shalabhasana for 5 minits. There will be complete recovery. Along with yogaasan stat using homeopathy medicine to prevent the backache in future.
