If your wife is having regular periods previously then there are less chances of periods being delayed but it can happen sometimes due to hormonal changes in body. I will suggest you to go for a home urine pregnancy test immediately to relax yourself.

Benefits of Vitamin D Supplement During Pregnancy for Mother and the Baby

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS, DGO
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Benefits of Vitamin D Supplement During Pregnancy for Mother and the Baby

Vitamin D and pregnancy go hand in hand. Expecting mothers need to ensure they get the recommended amounts of vitamin D during pregnancy for the healthy development of the baby as well as their own well-being.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin obtained mostly from consuming fortified milk or juice, fish oils and dietary supplements. It also is produced in the skin by exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D, which is ingested or produced in the skin must undergo hydroxylation in the liver and kidney to promote absorption of calcium from the gut to enable normal bone mineralization and growth. Severe maternal vitamin D deficiency has been associated with congenital rickets and disordered skeletal homeostasis coupled with fractures in the newborn during pregnancy.  Vitamin D is necessary for the metabolism and absorption of phosphorus and calcium. Many studies are finding a connection between low serum vitamin D levels and an increased risk of certain types of autoimmune disease, cancers, insulin resistance, neurological disease and cardiovascular disease.

Latest studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is common during pregnancy especially among women residing in northern latitudes, living in cold climates or wear sun and winter protective clothing and ethnic minorities, especially those with darker skin. As the vitamin D level of newborn is largely dependent on maternal vitamin D status, the infants of mothers with vitamin D deficiency are also at risk of vitamin D deficiency. Inadequate level of vitamin D can lead to abnormal bone growth, fractures, or rickets in newborns. Deficiency of vitamin D leads to a higher risk of pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes, premature birth and low birth weight.

The symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency include aching muscles, bone pain, and softened bones leading to fractures. Fish liver oil, fatty fish, and eggs are excellent food source for Vitamin D. It is difficult to get sufficient vitamin D from food, which makes it necessary to have vitamin D supplements. Since the skin uses the sun's rays to produce vitamin D, limited sun exposure is recommended. Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays intensifies the pigment changes causing skin darkening in pregnant women. Thus, most doctors endorse that pregnant women protect themselves from the sun and get their vitamin D from supplements. The average prenatal vitamin contains 400 IU of vitamin D, which makes it imperative that additional supplements should be taken. The significant compounds for human development are D2 and D3. The best way to really ensure adequate vitamin D is through simple supplementation. Ergocalciferol is the vegetarian form of vitamin D, whereas cholecalciferol is the animal-sourced form, derived from fish liver oil or lanolin from sheep.

I have strong unbearable pain in my portion below stomach during masturbation. Please suggest.

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery (BAMS)

Hello- this pain is due to contraction of your uterine muscles during masturbation. >this shows that the muscle tone of your uterus is not proper and you might be facing menstrual disturbances also along with this. >try these tips- 1) masturbation is not advisable at it reduces the viatlity and immunity of the body, so stop asap. 2) intake of dairy products will help your problem. 3) avoid fast food and spicy diet. 4) massage your lower abdomen with warm sesame oil daily for 15 minutes in a circular manner.

Me and my wife r planning to hva a bady from last three month. But she is nt able to conceive. What is the reason.
Hi dear. Infertility or inability to have children is a complex problem and can be due to many reasons. We normally suggest couples to try for atleast 6 months before trying to investigate for infertility. Both the woman and man are responsible for conception and to know the cause of infertility we need to test both. Basic ultrasound and hormone tests for woman as well as semen analysis for the male is needed to know the cause as there are multiple reasons for not conceiving, ranging from hormonal problems, stress, infections etc. So its necessary you visit a infertility specialist in your area for evaluation and treatment. All the best

4 Rare Complications Of IVF Treatment!

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an Assistive Reproductive Technology (ART) which involves extracting eggs from the ovary of a woman, and fertilizing them with sperm in the laboratory. The fertilized egg, known as the embryo, can be frozen for storage or be transferred to the uterus. This method is usually used as a method to circumnavigate infertility. People who are unable to conceive opt for IVF treatment. Like any other medical procedure, IVF involves quite a few rare complications -

Complications during egg-retrieval pro
cedure
Although this procedure is essentially painless and quick, in certain cases people may experience excessive bleeding from the ovaries or suffer an injury to other organs surrounding the ovary like the blood vessels, bladder or the bowel. People who’ve had a pelvic infection previously, are prone to having a severe infection after the treatment.

Multiple pregnancy
IVF increases your possibility of multiple pregnancy if multiple embryos are implanted in the uterus. This results in additional concerns and risks associated with low-weight birth, early labor or premature delivery.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
This is probably one of the most critical complications of IVF treatment. Use of fertility drugs like Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) which is used to induce ovulation, can cause swelling and pain in the ovaries, leading to ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome. This particular condition may come with severe or mild symptoms - abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. In rare cases, ovarian cysts or accumulation of fluid may occur in the abdominal cavity.

Ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage
IVF treatment can lead to ectopic pregnancy among 2-5% of women. This occurs when the eggs are implanted anywhere outside your uterus, usually in the fallopian tube. Since the fertilized eggs fail to survive outside your uterus, the pregnancy is discontinued. Also, chances of a miscarriage are slightly increased due to the use of frozen embryos.

The rate of success of IVF treatment largely depends on various factors such as maternal age, reproductive history, lifestyle factors and causes behind infertility. It is advisable that you get yourself diagnosed and tested before undergoing an IVF treatment.
