Dental Decay and Bleeding Gums

Dental Decay and Bleeding Gums

Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases affecting the oral cavity. Dental cavities is a highly prevalent condition, especially among children. In most cases, improper hygiene leads to deposition of food on the tooth. This in turn is acted upon by harmful bacteria, thus releasing acid that dissolves the tooth structure. In most cases, the decay starts on the outside of the tooth and gradually reaches the inner layers.

Gum diseases and bad breath:

One would think that if you are decay free, you have a healthy mouth. However, overall oral health requires healthy gums as well. They cover the teeth and provide anchoring support to the jawbones. Minor infection (gingivitis) can progress to a severe condition (periodontitis), which causes teeth to shake and even fall out! It is one of the main causes of bad breath or halitosis too. Swelling of the gums gradually, leads to spontaneous bleeding, which is the first sign of trouble. This can be managed by simply improving oral hygiene. It is advisable to see the dentist.

Treat cavities and bleeding gums:

Listed below are some common methods to manage bleeding gums and bad breath:

  1. Brushing: Advisable at least twice a day using a soft bristled toothbrush.
  2. Flossing: Flossing removes plaque from between the teeth and reduces chances of decay and gum problems
  3. Eating Healthy: Bad food habits are one of the main reasons of bad breath. A bad digestive system manifests as bad breath and so eating healthy is very important for healthy gums. Adequate water, fiber, calcium and Vitamin C are essential for gum health, so ensure they find a place in your diet.
  4. Annual Dental Visits: Visit your dentist once in 6 months. Simple procedures that do not require time or money like regular scaling will help improve the teeth and gum health while reduce bad breath issues.

For your ulcers apply local anesthetic gel like ora sore or Dologel etc. Drink plenty of liquid, start taking multivitamins and try to remain stress free as stress is a key factor for ulcers in todays lifestyle.

Hello, thank you for your query. I understand you have a condition called halitosis (bad mouth odour). Causes: 1. Foods: sulfur containing foods such as garlic, onions, some kinds of fish, coffee etc can leave bad odours in the mouth 2. Poor oral hygiene 3. Tobacco habits: smoking and/or chewing tobacco 4. Mouth dryness or lack of adequate saliva 5. Mouth infections 6. Health problems: gastric problems, acidity, cadidiasis, diabetes, acid reflux, lactose intolerance etc 7. Wearing braces or having removable appliances (increase food retention and if oral hygiene is poor, can lead to halitosis. 8. Pregnancy 9. Other causes. Please see a specialist to diagnose the cause and give you appropriate advice.

I have lost two teeth. Is it necessary to go for denture? Is there any alternative? If I do not do anything will it affect my digesting system? Please advice. Thanks.

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Hi! any lost teeth requires replacement either by way of denture, fixed brigde or implants.Loosing teeth n not replacing them can result in the movement of ur other teeth and can change the overall bitting pattern of ur mouth as well as causes changes in the musculature of ur jaw joint. It is highly recommended that u replace them .

Hi doctor. I have gum pain from last 3 weeks. it bleed sometimes as well, please give advise?
We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with surgical, gum strengthening procedure. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Dentist, Bangalore
Superficial cavities can be filled, and deeper ones can be root canal treated. You should visit a dentist and for sure it can be corrected at this stage. Thank you.

Dear Doctor I'm writing this on behalf of my daughter, she is 8.5years old. Most of her milk teeth are decayed and few of them are flowing off and came new teeth in that location. My doubt is that, is it safe to bump off the almost decayed molar teeth by a dentist?

As far her molars (milk teeth) are concerned. Ideally they fall at the age of 11-13 years. Followed by eruption of permanent. They play important role in guiding eruption of permanent teeth apart from chewing. I would suggest to take the x rays of her decayed tooth and depending on the status of infection. Filling or a root canal is advisable. Early loss of milk tooth affects chewing ability of child and also leads to delayed eruption of permanent teeth.

Usually dentists give plain water to wash your mouth to rinse after drilling cavities. But my dentist gives me green or blue coloured water to rinse. Can you tell me what is that blue or green coloured water and why is that used instead of plain water.

Dear Lybrate user, Mouthrinses are used in dentistry for a number of reasons: to freshen breath, to prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque formation on teeth and gums, to prevent or reduce gingivitis, or to deliver a combination of these effects. It is quite common for your dentist to give you blue or green colored water to rinse your mouth before the treatment procedure is started. A pre-procedural mouthwash serves an important function in infection control as numerous studies have demonstrated that mouthrinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash can greatly reduce the number of viable microorganisms in the dental office which are usually spread during drilling cavities and scaling with ultrasonic scalars.
