Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Back stretching- lie flat, pull one of the knee forward to chest, hold for 3 seconds, then bring the other knee forward to the chest and again hold for 3 seconds. Then pull both knees towards the chest and hold for 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times each exercise twice a day.

MSG enhances the natural flavours of meats, poultry, seafood and many vegetables. It is also used in low fat foods to make up for flavor lost when fat is reduced or eliminated.Thats why most of the restaurants especially Chinese restaurants use this MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE in their recipies. But certain studies have found link between MSG and Fibromyalgia(Symptoms include chronic muscle pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and painful tender points or trigger points). So in your case we can consider that consumption of KFC chicken containing MSG causes pain in your left hand. It is found out that consumption of Dietery supplements containing VITAMIN-B6 or food rich in Vit-B6 reduces the effects of MSG in our body thus relieving the pain in your case. Some of the best sources of B6 include beans, poultry, fish, fortified cereals, dark leafy greens, papayas, orangesThe recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adult men and women up to the age of 50 is 1.3 milligrams daily. Men over 50 have an RDA of 1.7 mg, while women over 50 have an RDA of 1.5 mg, according to NLM. One cup of cooked kidney beans contains 0.2 mg of vitamin B6, while a large orange has about 0.1 mg.

Pain in the joint is an eventuality that only few can escape. It is an ailment that comes with age and promises to stay despite continued attempts at eradicating it. Being a problem that many are battling, it has provoked attempts at treating it. Various disciplines of medicines have tried in their own ways in dealing with this problem, but ayurveda with its strict reliance on natural products and aversion to chemicals has been most preferred. The various ways by which ayurveda treats joint pains are:
1. Massage: ayurveda focuses on massages as a remedial measure. Using few herbal oils and using them to massage regularly on the affected joints has been an accepted remedy for joint pains. A massage promotes blood circulation and creates a calming effect.

2. Hot and cold compresses: the effectiveness of this form of treatment has remained prevalent through generations. Extremely convenient and easy to use, you can use hot and cold compresses alternatively to ease the pain.

3. Fenugreek: fenugreek seeds have a long standing reputation of relieving you of pain. Boasting of antioxidant properties and the ability to reduce swelling, they must be finely grounded and swallowed with lukewarm water to enjoy best results.

4. Turmeric: in the hierarchy of ayurvedic medications, turmeric probably ranks the highest. It is packed with multiple benefits. Not only does it take care of the skin, it also helps in reducing joint pains. The most common way of having it is by mixing turmeric in a glass of warm milk and honey.

5. Apple cider vinegar: apple cider vinegar reduces joint pains by effectively eliminating the accumulated toxins. It is rich in magnesium and phosphorus and owing to its alkalizing effect, it has the ability to cure rheumatism.

In a free diagnosis camp, I got to know that I have osteoporosis (T score -3.5). Post this I got my full checkup done, all other tests are good except (Vit D 11.98) & B12 88) which are towards insufficiency end. Though my lifestyle was sedentary but I have picked up running in last 5 years and have run quite a few half marathons. I have left all this as I have developed foot pain and weight again increased post quitting running. After a gap of a year, I have again started workouts and I run 2 km 3-4 times a week and do 30 min walks daily, followed by workout. I do these exercises in park so get some sun exposure as well. I am 39 year old (Wt 85 kgs), my legs pains whenever I run fast now. Pls advise what should be done so that I can continue running long.

Dear lybrate-user, namaskar, you seem to do very well with your workout. Keep it up. Avoid running fast continuously. You can do that intermittently and increase the speed gradually. Secondly. Bmd test done in a free camp is a very crude sort of screening. If you wish, get bone densitometry done at a reputed radiology centre for exact assessment. You may take dv k-60 once a week and becosule twice a day for 3 months to compensate the deficiency reported. Take care.

My grandmother (83 years) is having pain around the knee area which is moving downwards. Because of this she is feeling the pain in her entire leg. This is happening in the left leg. The severity of pain increases when she lies down, but reduces when she walks or sits. Is this because of some nerve problem? Have tried cold and water water massage too but there is no improvement. She has been operated on right leg for the hip fracture and her movement is with the help of stick support. This pain has started since last 3-4 days. Due to this she is unable to sleep and is impacting her overall health.

Pain in the knee area in a 83 year old lady is mostly due to osteoarthritis or as we commonly call it as old age joints. Moreover she is bearing less weight on the right leg and more on the left, which further aggravates her condition. It is not something major to worry at this moment. Get a xray done and we can reach a definite diagnosis.

You can follow these advice- 1. Rest on bed which is not too hard and not too soft, 2. When you are lying on your back, keep pillow under your knees. 3. When you are side lying, keep pillow between the knees. 4. Take rest as much as you can 5. Add dairy products and calcium components in your meal. Here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -Apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --While sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -Find a mattress with back support. A good mattress should provide support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. Medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses. -Do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -Avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -Good posture plays a key role in your spine health, helping to prevent additional back and neck pain and even injuries to spinal structures. Try to be aware of your posture and make good posture part of your normal routine. -head up, shoulders back, rear tucked under -Stand and walk with correct posture -Sit with support -Lift and carry carefully -And finally, keep moving:-Maintaining a static position for too long—more than twenty or thirty minutes at a time—is hard on the back. Prolonged static posture can slowly deplete elasticity from the tissues. By simply moving—be it a change of position, a stretch, or a short walk—the tissue elasticity needed to protect your joints can be restored and the associated discomfort reduced. -Stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -Some Physiotherapy treatment like IFT current can give you relief. -Consult a Physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your back pain. Best wishes.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Slip disc is a condition in which the intervertebral disc goes posteriorly and presses on the nerves. The actual management will depend upon the correlation between clinical findings and the mri films and report. So if I can know your neurological status (motor, sensory and evaluation of deep tendon reflexes) the I can correlate and tell you the correct management. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Most probably you are suffering from oa of knee. Knee surgery-total knee replacement (tkr) is quite safe & gives uniformly good results, Surgery should be done when patient is still active & will be able to take benefit of surgery. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem. Kindly show me x- rays before a final decision can be taken. You will be thoroughly investigated before surgery is under taken. Risk in surgery is less than the risk in crossing road. Why not discuss with me in a video conferee? (facility provided by lybrate. Com)

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You are very young to actually have persistent back pains. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.
