My Dog is active and smart. He is a cross breed of Gradient and Rajapalyamam but he still not grown big neither fat. He is always thin and hyper. Anything to worry or concern?

MVSC
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Hi, what is the age of your dog? if it is active you dont worry about weight of the dog. Give good food which he likes and deworm regularly.

I have a dog. Who is 2 month old. So I want to know about her food & diet? As she vomits vry frequently aftr eating anything.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Just give soft gruel kind of food n check. Like cerelac etc. If vilomiting immediately without squeezing the stomach, that means your puppy has megaesophagus. Which is not good.

My german shepherd is 8 months old and is a very happy and energetic dog. From last 2-3 days (21/12/2015) he is foaming too much. We give him roti and meat two times daily and drools. He is eating well but I am worried for his excess salivation. I just want to know whether it is normal or not?

MVSc
Veterinarian, Darjeeling
Excessive salivation is not at all a normal thing. You did not mention the deworming and vaccination status. I think your pet needs deworming and you have to repeat it in every 3 months interval. Along with that, give him liver tonic and a syrup with digestive enzymezes. If this condition persists even after that, go for feeding ors along with antacids and antivomitic medicines. I am sure that it will be alright then.

My pup is 1 year old. let me know the vaccination schedule for him. He is a pug . Also let me know deworming schedule too.

M.V.Sc, B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian,
What we are doing in kolkata -- fecal sample examination routinely to get an idea about the worms present within body/ intestine and selection of dewormers inaccordance with. For vaccination, it's best to have a prior health check up for fitness and high end immune status so that after innoculation antibody could be produced at desired level. Schedule we are following at par indian standard, a qualified vet will guide you as per your pet's requirement, individual dog differs with its schedule. Rabies, an endemic disease in india at different parts, needs no excuse to execute while planning for immunization against it. Consult further with your dog's previous records of immunizations and deworming. Thanks.

I want to ask you one question. My pet dog has bitten my mom around 50 days before. My dog is healthy now. She has not taken any vaccines till now. I am quite sure that my dog is totally healthy. But I have fear about carrier state of the dog. Can a Asymptotic (just a carrier without showing any symptoms) dog cause rabies in human. Was there any case you have noticed before in which owner dies but not the dog? Is it possible. I am very frightened about this. Please reply me as soon as possible.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Good morning. The first thing to be assured is that the dog which has bitten should be regularly vaccinated for anti rabies vaccine. If the recent vaccination dose is overdue then Ill personally recommend not to waste anytime in doing further research and get your mother vaccinated for the 7 days schedule as per routine. Starts from the day of bite. In case you have missed initial doses then please let me know.

I am having a female dog and it is 4 years old. It was having her menstrual cycle. Its been 22 days as of today and I don't think there is much bleeding. I am not sure of it tho. Today it ran out of the house and got mated with an another street male dog. Now is there a chance of possible pregnancy ? Is there any medicine apart from surgery to use as a contraceptive to drop the pregnancy ?

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)

I am having a female dog and it is 4 years old. It was having her menstrual cycle. Its been 22 days as of today and I...
Nothing should be done till 35 days from today. On 35 th day meet a proper veterinarian, get an ultrasound done. If your dog is getting pregnant, there are safer medicines available, but should be started only after the the ultrasound examination confirms this.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
WHAT IS CANINE HIP DYSPLASIA?
Canine hip dysplasia is the abnormal development and growth of a dog's hip joint. It occurs commonly in large breed dogs such as Labrador retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Saint Bernards, but it can occur in dogs of any breed and size, and even in cats. There is no single cause of hip dysplasia; rather it is caused by multiple factors, some of which include genetics and nutrition. The abnormal development of the hip joint that occurs in young dogs with dysplasia leads to excessive hip joint laxity (looseness). This laxity causes stretching of the supporting ligaments, joint capsule, and muscles around the hip joint, leading to joint instability, pain, and permanent damage to the anatomy of the affected hip joint. If left untreated, dogs with hip dysplasia usually develop osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease).
Dogs with hip dysplasia commonly show clinical signs of hind limb lameness, pain, and muscle wasting (atrophy). Owners report that their dogs are lame after exercise, run with a "bunny-hopping" gait, are reluctant to rise or jump, or aren't as active as other puppies. Many dysplastic dogs will show these signs early in life (6-12 months of age), but some dogs do not show signs of pain until they are older.
Diagnosis: Examination by touch and confirmation by radiographs.
Treatment and care: Conservative treatment benefits many patients when they experience signs of hip dysplasia. This treatment includes enforced rest, anti-inflammatory drugs and pain medication. Once the clinical signs are controlled, the therapy includes weight reduction if needed and an exercise program designed to improve the strength of your pet’s rear legs. Such an exercise program might include swimming and walking uphill. Surgical treatment being more invasive, is not practiced regularly, and does not preclude the need of conservative therapy.
The signs may aggravate during the season transition and patients may need support of pain medications during such period.
Nutrition: For younger patients – food that supports development and tissue repair may be offered. Optimal nutrition is also targeted to reduce health risks associated with excessive calcium and phosphorus (which may cause skeletal problems), and excess calories (which may cause obesity). Dietary therapy for dogs with hip dysplasia includes a diet that will help dogs run better, play better and rise more easily while maintaining optimal body weight. A joint diet should have added EPA (eicosapentanoic acid) an omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to help maintain joint function, enhanced levels of glucosamine and chondroitin to provide the building blocks of healthy cartilage
and L-carnitine to maintain optimal weight.
Pets with hip dysplasia should not be mated/bred, as they can potentially transmit the “Defective Gene” to their progeny!

There is no medicine available for mammsry tumor. You can try homeopathy, but it better if you get this operated.

What diet should be given to German shepherd (4-5 months old)? I' m currently giving 250gms of chicken with boiled rice, chapati with curd or milk and sometimes pedigree.

Master of sciences, B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Salem
My advice would be going for the dog food as a whole as u r dog is grown up to 4 months try fidele or pedigree all the three times daily as you know dog requirement it 20 times more than what we need and also they require more fat. they grow very fast compare to the human so they need a carnivorous food not a food of omnivorous.

MVSc, BVSc

Better to allow her to breathe steam vapours from a little distance, add eukalyptus oil to cotton and put near her in the room. Also you can apply vicks vapourub near her nose. Wipe any secretions near nose with warm salt water.

I have cone to know that tiles are not good for dogs? Is that true My dog can't grip on tiles or marble he slips also there is change in his way of walking So I make him walk on tough floor for 1.5 hours a day is that okay? He is just 40 days.

MVSC
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Hi lybrate-user, Yes, puppies may loose grip on too much smoothen tiles. Allow him to walk occasionally on non slippery floor to develop strength in the bones. At a time 1.5 hrs not required for your pup, give him a complete balanced diet.
