The Connection Between Erectile Dysfunction And Depression

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Jodhpur
The Connection Between Erectile Dysfunction And Depression

Being unable to deal with erectile dysfunction can cause men to lose their self-esteem, feel angry, anxious and frustrated, or even lose interest in sex altogether. This can threaten their relationships and may even result in depression.

Erectile dysfunction is treatable, but the time before and during treatment may be difficult. Here is some advice to assist you and your partner in getting your sex life back on track.

The Connection Between Erectile Dysfunction and Depression

Think of the brain as a highly sensitive sex organ. Sexual desire starts in the brain and works its way down. That's because of special brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters. These chemicals increase communication between brain cells and trigger more blood flow to the sex organs. The problem is, with depression and other mood disorders, the brain circuits that communicate using these chemicals don't function properly.

Many men and women with depression tell of having low or no sexual desire. And that puts a tremendous strain on intimate relationships.

Diagnosing Erectile Dysfunction and Depression:

Erectile dysfunction is a very common problem as about 50% of men above 50 years of age suffer from it. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize depression when it is part of the problem. Here is how depression is diagnosed when it is known you have erectile dysfunction:

  1. Loss of Sexual Desire
  2. Erectile dysfunction starts happening after a traumatic event like loss of a job or of a loved one
  3. Feelings of stress, anxiety or frustration
  4. Pessimistic outlook to life

Coping with Erectile Dysfunction and Depression:

  1. Antidepressants: Antidepressants are used to treat depression, however some antidepressants worsen erectile dysfunction, therefore it is crucial that you explicitly explain your condition to your doctor.
  2. 2. Therapy: Therapy is performed by a licensed mental health expert who will identify and help you overcome all the issues which are depressing you.

If you wish to discuss on any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist and ask a free question.

A friend of mine suffers from depression but refuses to meet a psychiatrist what should be done?

A friend of mine suffers from depression but refuses to meet a psychiatrist what should be done?
You can try talking to her about what is bothering her. Make her feel good about herself- encourage her to do things that she is good at. Help her be distracted from her negative thoughts, by keeping her busy in positive activities. At times she may find herself incapable of doing something, help her learn those skills. As a friend this is the support you can provide , rest she will have to work on her own thoughts and want & try to come out of her sad state.

Losing a loved one is never easy and what you are going through is a natural process of grieving. It would be advisable to engage yourself in physical activity, be around your loved ones, and rather than feeling it, counteract- express your feelings and talk about it to people who you consider are close to you.

I am having depression. Can't concentrate on anything. Mind gets diverted. What should I do.

Masters in Clinical Psychology
Psychologist, Lucknow
I am having depression. Can't concentrate on anything. Mind gets diverted. What should I do.
Practice yoga and meditation. Although you could technically consider yoga your daily exercise, practicing the deep stretches and slow body movements will help you to clear your mind. Meditating - clearing your mind - while practicing gentle yoga will give double the relaxation effect to ease your stress. Use guided imagery to imagine a place that makes you feel at peace. Imagine somewhere that you feel happy; focus on the details to fully remove your mind from the present. Do yoga alone or in a group setting to help you learn new poses. As you advance in your yoga, you will be able to form complex stretches that force you to focus and take your mind off your stress. Practice deep relaxation by doing progressive muscle relaxation. This is when you work through your body by tensing your muscles, holding the tension for ten seconds, and then releasing it. This will soften and relieve all the muscles in your body. Learn to relax. Relaxing your body, by whatever natural means, is a great way to reduce stress. Don't expect your stress to immediately dissipate; it can take time. In most cases, try not to fixate on the stress itself while you're relaxing. Think of something placid and tranquil, or think of nothing in particular. Let your body tell your mind that everything is okay. Listen to calm and soft music. Music really gets you relaxed and happy. Try listening to music with no vocals and pick music with instruments like the flute, piano, or violin. Classical, jazz, or folk tunes generally work well, but if that's not your cup of tea, choose music that puts you in a good place. Eat properly. Your body needs to be healthy, strong, happy and properly fueled to help you tackle stress. Like it or not, stress is a bodily reaction to anything that disturbs its natural state, meaning that your body can have a profound effect on producing and relieving stress. Water has been shown to relieve stress. That's because a dehydrated body creates cortisol, a stress hormone. An under-hydrated body creates stress to motivate the owner of the body to properly care for him/herself. Start decreasing caffeine and alcohol intake. In some cases, alcohol intake increases stress response in humans while being linked to substance dependency, a stressful condition itself. Caffeine is also responsible for raising stress levels, especially at work, so try to stick to water as a general rule. Eat a healthy breakfast and healthy snacks during the day. It is better to eat several smaller meals throughout the day than to consume three large meals. For a healthy stress-free diet, consume more complex carbohydrates such as whole-grain breads and pasta, foods high in vitamin a such as oranges, foods high in magnesium like spinach, soybeans or salmon, and black and green tea, which contain antioxidants.

Hi I am suffering anxiety panic attacks from the last 2 yrs. My weight is also increasing .i am on ashwagandha rt now.
Dear Lybrate user Panic attacks have become very common these days. During an attack try to think logically (that this is just an anxiety attack and there is nothing dangerous in this) because panic attack blocks our thinking. Also do deep breathing (belly breathing) so that you get more oxygen. Also eat healthy and sleep well. Sleep is very important and make sure that you get a good quality of sleep and that too on time. Exercise or do anything or do yoga or meditation. Find the triggers or situations or places or people which give you anxiety and panic attacks and try to avoid them or deal in a healthier way. Psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy together give best results in this. Many people have got rid of their panic attacks in Bhati Mind Care. Weight has psychological factors and weight loss is more of a mental process. Its due to the stress anxiety emotional eating faulty habits and patters poor lifestyle etc. So this can also be cured by psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy. You can contact me for more information.

Hello sir/madam I am student.
Please give me a suggestion how to increase my concentration and sharp my brain. If I s...
I think that your high expectations on yourself and the possibility of not attaining them is causing a lot of frustration and therefore the headaches. I suggest that you implement the following seriously and you will see success: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

10 Reasons Why You Should Quit Smoking Right Now!

10 Reasons Why You Should Quit Smoking Right Now!
Smoking is less socially acceptable these days. Most workplaces, shopping malls, theaters and stores prohibit smoking.

Many government entities are enacting laws to ban smoking from all indoor public places, including bars and restaurants. However, despite all these steps, this very expensive habit is still prevalent in society.

Mostly people start smoking as teens, and they are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. There are many different reasons why people smoke. They can start out of curiosity, peer pressure, a desire to fit in with a group or look older and mature, or even to rebel.

It can also be influenced by parental example or used as a means to reduce stress and feel more relaxed. In some countries like the united states, the impact of advertising and media is waning as governments have restricted such practices, but it continues in many parts of the world.

According to the centers for disease control and prevention, an estimated 43.8 million americans smoke. It is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the u. S.

Smoking kills more people than obesity, substance abuse, infectious diseases, firearms and traffic accidents.

There are about 600 ingredients in cigarettes that when burned create more than 7, 000 chemicals. Some of the most harmful chemicals released in cigarette smoke are nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde, arsenic, ammonia, lead, benzene, butane, cadmium, hexamine, toluene and lots more.

These chemicals are harmful to the smoker as well as those exposed to secondhand smoke.

This habit is very difficult to break. Even when cutting down on cigarettes, you begin to go into a withdrawal phase and experience a variety of symptoms like headaches, fatigue, irritability and nicotine cravings.

But there are many reasons to quit, not the least of which are improving your health and saving your hard-earned money.

Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Tension means anxiety. Anxiety is fear about unknown happening or fear about future. Anxiety about things which we do not know or anxiety about things we are not experienced are common. Please tell me what makes you anxious? past? present? future? career? economic status? health matters? anything else? let me know. Take care.

I want to write a book.
I want to lose weight.
I want to make more money.
I want to change the world.
I want to….

Most of us have a list of “I want to’s” but far fewer of us go any further than that.

Why?

It’s not because we can't, although sometimes we like to tell ourselves that.

It’s really because we don't want to bad enough.

“If it’s important you’ll find a way. If it’s not, you’ll find an excuse.”

It’s time to take inventory and decide.

Who do you want to become? What do you want to achieve?

There’s no better day than today to start turning those “I want to’s” into “to do’s.”

It might not be easy and it probably won't happen overnight but your life, your mission, whatever it is you were called to do is too important for you to settle. Don't keep putting it off. Don't keep wishing and dreaming. Start doing.

And, when you want to give up… read this again and keep going.

Every success comes at a price (time, effort, attention). You just need to be willing to pay it.

7 Foods That Fight Stress

In the modern day lifestyle, it is extremely difficult to be stress free. Even a tiny situation like losing your pen to a something like meeting a deadline at work can cause stress. Stress acts like a catalyst to different diseases like high cholesterol, hypertension, cardiac diseases, etc. You cannot avoid stress, but what you can do is help yourself fight it; and you can actually fight stress with the help of food as well. Here are a few food items which will help you with your fight against stress:

  1. Chocolate: Chocolate is one of the best stress busters. It contains magnesium, phenyl ethyl amine and carbohydrates, all of which help lift your spirits. Chocolate helps in the reduction of stress hormones, helping you to relax.
  2. Coffee: Coffee helps your brain signal the production of BDNF (a brain derived protein), which helps to keep your brain cells healthy. A low level of BDNF can cause a lot of stress and depression. Coffee triggers many neurotransmitters, which control your mood changes; so may be a cup or two of coffee will help your to be chirpier.
  3. Green leafy vegetables: All green leafy vegetables like spinach contain a high quantity of magnesium. Magnesium prevents headaches and fatigue, which in turn reduces stress.
  4. Black Tea: Black tea can relieve you of stress, quicker than any other food item. Black tea reduces the amount of cortisol, a hormone which causes stress, and gives you a feeling of calmness.
  5. Milk: Milk contains calcium, which is known to ease anxiety and control sudden mood swings related to PMS or post menstrual stress.
  6. Bananas: Bananas have a huge content of dopamine, which is a natural chemical that works towards boosting your mood. This is the same chemical released in your body after a session of working out. Bananas also have a lot of potassium and B group vitamins which work towards soothing your nervous system and a lot of magnesium which brings in positivity to your mood.
  7. Almonds: Almonds are rich in vitamin E and group B vitamins, which will help you to be more resilient when you are depressed or anxious.

So if you are stressed out, pop in a few almonds or have a cup of tea, and release your stress.
