I am 22 yrs old female. I had a love who was already married when I was 16 yrs old. The man even loved me & shared the same kind of emotion with me one night, but then he went out of it. I still love him & recently contacted him to inform about my success. I am once again shattered in those old feelings. What should I do?

I have a girlfriend and I m madly in love with her. I m an 18 year old guy and my friend told me that it is not love. It's infatuation. He told me that one cannot be in love with someone before 23 years or around till the brain gets fully developed. I know it is love and not infatuation but I wanna ask you whether my friend is wrong or I? Is it related with hormonal or brain development or something?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I have never known the brain to get fully developed by 23 years! And yes, you are all of 18 years and can never say that this is your true love because you are still very young to realize, what true love is. So in all probability you are infatuated, however real this feeling of yours is. Now is there something wrong with infatuation? Don’t you feel great for being in your infatuation? Of course it does and that is all that matters. You just enjoy this feeling and the relationship as long as it lasts. I am also sure that this girl is either the same age or younger than you and so her feelings are also subject to hormones and she is still quite immature. This is a phase all youngsters go through and you need not feel bad about it or feel the need to defend yourself. Just enjoy yourself and let people call it what they want.

My daughter sometime laughs a lot without any reason and starts talking irrelevant. She is doing her post graduation and staying away from home with her younger sister who is doing her graduation. Is it due to some stress, should I call her back or let her complete her studies?

Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user. Laughing a lot unnecessarily and starts talking irrelevant. You have to observe her more. What you think irrelevant may be relevant for her. Talk to her friends and get their opinion, and feedback. Then we will decide. For the time being, let her complete the studies. Take care.

I really want to stop smoking but just couldn't.Tried atleast 90% of the tips given on internet but it just stops for awhile than starts off again.Help!

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Congratulations that you want to quit smoking. Tobacco consumption, either through smoke or other edible forms, is always harmful. The desire to quit is a good starting point. The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. Smoking uses the respiratory system and gives you a faster kick. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lungs with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke! You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke and chew tobacco: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga) or chewing, and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.E. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking tobacco. Here?s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world ? you can start the cessation all over again. Don?t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, ?giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

Hi Ms. Lybrate-user, you are going through a tough time indeed. However, first and foremost you need to de-stress yourself and relax so that you can think well and act prudently on the steps next. I would advise you to remain mentally strong as you already are, believe in yourself, and have faith and hope that there always is light at the end of the tunnel, however dark the tunnel may appear to be at present. Practicing mindfulness meditation can also help you relax, de-stress and keep you focused even during these tough times. You may have a flight of disturbing thoughts initially but slowly you will get to do better and be able to control your mind/ thought pattern well. A trip to some hill station or some scenic natural place can possibly help you relax, rejuvenate, think clearly and have a fresh perspective. Simultaneously, do keep up your dietary habits, lifestyle & hobbies and try enjoying every moment of your life irrespective. Its indeed important that you stay psycho-socially active too. Should you still have issues keeping calm and focus, you can always seek help from a psychologist who can clinically evaluate and put you on anxiolytics suitably, should it require so. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best.

I am 17 year old male. I can't sleep at night. There is some strange kind of pain in my body while sleeping which doesn't let me sleep.

BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
1>do some leg exercises - apparently some easy leg lifts, squats, or your leg exercise of choice can help divert blood flow to the legs and away from the brain. This can help quiet the mind, making it easier to sleep. Exercise at least three hours before bedtime so the body has sufficient time to wind down before hitting the sack. 2> eat for sleep - eat foods high in magnesium, like almonds and spinach, and foods high in vitamin b complex, like leafy green vegetables, nuts, and legumes. 3> try a hot bath or shower -stepping from warm water into that pre-cooled bedroom will cause body temperatures to drop slightly, which can trigger sleepy feelings by slowing down metabolic activity. Hope the above tips will help you to have a sound sleep! regards.

Steps to Keeping Your Cool and Saving Your Relationships - Tips by Relationship Counselor Shivani Misri Sadhoo

Post graduate in counselling psychology
Psychologist,
Steps to Keeping Your Cool and Saving Your Relationships - Tips by Relationship Counselor Shivani Misri Sadhoo
You may image or you might already have experienced this situation - one unfortunate day your best friend or co-worker or your partner tell you something insulting, hurts you, screams at you and you forget that moment that they might be suffering from a momentary mood swing or they might have miss-understood you and YOU DON’T WAIT and insult them back, scream back at them – risking, weakening or even destroying your relationships.

Relationship counsellor Shivani Sadhoo suggests that when we are under anger attack from our loved ones, the first instinct that works for us is – either to fight back immediately or getting shocked or surprised how to react – these two reactions generally make the situation worse.

The right thing one should practice is MINDFULNESS. That is building the ability to judge and understand the crisis situation first and then react accordingly. Here are some simple steps to improve your interpersonal skills and to save your valuable relationships in the time of a fight.

Identify your impulse that precedes your anger response.

When you get angry the moment prior reacting to our anger our body shows some impulse, i.e. sensation that rises up through our body prior launching anger reaction—these impulses are like - rapid heartbeat, feeling heat in your ears , raising your voice, clenching your jaw (different people have different kind of impulses). When you can pick up on these warning signs, you can give yourself time to make a deliberate choice. At that moment, you are practicing anger management.

Control the impulse.

The goal is to keep your body and mind in control if you're quick to fight, give yourself a time-out: shift your focus on your body instead. Concentrate on feeling the heat beneath you, then take long deep breaths from your diaphragm; try inhaling through your nose on a count of two, holding till six and exhaling through your mouth on seven.

Accept extreme anger is wrong

Many of us believe the expression of anger is a sign of strength or an instrument of self-defence. It is true to some extent BUT when anger gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to all kind of problems —problems at work, in our personal relationships, worsens our BP & heart condition and in the overall quality of your life. It can make you feel as though you are at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. Remember that unless we accept extreme anger is BAD no matter what we practice or think, we cannot improve ourselves and lead a healthy and happy life.
