I am 24 years old, I smoke cigarettes, I want to quit it but can't, what should I do to quit it?

Dear user, Welcome to lybrate-user. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. I suggest you to consult a psychologist or de addiction therapist. Take care.

Dear sir/ madam I am 46 years old guy not established both personally and professionally. I have ocd and I get feelings of irritation, anger, some sort of disturbance in my head (heaviness I would say ), depression. After I put on my shoe lace I avoid touching my face body. It bothers me. I feel dirtied. Even when dust flies all over my body on moving out it makes me feel dirty, angry, depressed. I avoid touching door handles, door locks as I feel I will dirty my hands. I don't like to touch my books after I touch my shoes. I feel I will dirty the books. I wash hand after every activity with soap. I apply soap on taps and my hand after brushing, after making tea I wash hands with soap. I cannot stand the stickiness of my hands nor dirtying my hands. I want to overcome all that is wrong with me. I am giving more importance to cleanliness than my life, my career, I am not sound financially. I request someone to offer me free psychotherapy as my situation is bad. Thanks

Repeated thoughts coming to the mind, acting to the thoughts to calm the mind & increased uneasiness when try to resist these thoughts, are symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The repeated thought of dirt & your acting to the thoughts by repeated washing & cleaning indicate that you are suffering from OCD. Treatment is available for OCD in the form of medicines & psychotherapy. If you get treated you can be relieved of the OCD. So get yourself evaluated by a Psychiatrist to assess the extent & severity of OCD in you, who will prescribe you treatment accordingly. Your feeling that you are not established professionally & personally indicate you may have pessimistic thoughts. The feelings of irritation, anger, heaviness in head, all these say that you may have Depression within. Take help of a Psychiatrist & get yourself evaluated & treated accordingly. And most important try to imbibe positive thoughts within. It is never late to start anything. Put your maximum efforts to solve the problems in your life. If after trying also no solution is coming, discuss your problem with a well wisher with whom you feel comfortable, take help if necessary & try to solve it. Read motivational books & quotes to build in optimism. For any problem coming in life, one should not loose patience & hope nor get frustrated & pessimistic about it. Problems come to everyone's life in different forms & maximum effort should be put to overcome them. With a calm mind, one should work on the problem. Try to analyze the problem & work on all possible ways to solve it, putting maximum effort. If one way is not working, try the other alternative to solve it. If still it is not solved, take help from outside & try to solve it. Good results definitely come if one proceeds with a calm, positive & confident mind.

How Neglect from Parents Affects Your Child?

Post Graduate Diploma in Pyschology
Psychologist, Noida
How Neglect from Parents Affects Your Child?

Parents sometimes tend to neglect their children due to various reasons. However, this negligence influences the children severely. It can affect the development, personality, relationship traits of the children. Every child needs care and love. Parents are naturally the closest people in a child’s world. Negligence from the closest people can lead to destructive character traits in their personality.

1. Attachment problems: One of the primary and direct effects of parental negligence towards children can lead children to be less attached with family. If a child does not get the warmth and care from parents, he automatically detaches from the family bonding and even does not develop the love and compassionate feelings for the family. This pattern hardly changes over time, and it can even lead to problematic relationship of the child in the future. The child may not be able to be close to his own children later.

2. Brain development: Children are tender and sensitive, just like floral buds. Every stimulus has an action. For instance, a child who is affected by malnutrition suffers from weak neural cells. This can be a reason behind weak brain functions. The basic pillars of brain processes, that is, thinking and logical thinking, everything is affected due to parental negligence. It may lead to low level of self-confidence, depression, frustration, anxiety and stress, troubled thoughts and emotional distortions.

Signs of parental negligence in children

1. Eating Disorders

2. Disrupted Sleep

3. Withdrawal from family bonding

4. Aggressive attitude

5. Bed wetting

6. Missing out school

7. Obsessive traits in behavioural patterns

8. Nightmares

9. Sudden change in attitude and behaviours

10. Depression

11. Violence

Every child seeks complete attention and love of his or her parents. However, parents may neglect them due to work stress, social obligations, personal problems and other such reasons. But parents should be considerate about the developmental barriers that could be posed due to this type of negligence. Some children also show eating habit changes, abusive attitude, violence or sometimes even plunge into complete isolation. While children require free scope to let their emotional and mental development boost with social activities, neglected children can withdraw themselves from social activities.

This means no friends, no social activity in life. This is a major reason for depression, suicidal attempts, deformed thought processes and misled lifestyle. As a parent, you can offer your optimum care and affection to your child to avoid such mental distortions, which can be avoided with love and warmth. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult the doctor and ask a free question.

He is very weak in studies language learning disability Weak in counting money but his brain is normal how he should improve his knowledge.

BHMS

Hi, Give him homoeopathic medicine for increasing memory and making the mind sharper - Anacardium 200/ once daily. Management: -Meditation for at least 15 to 30 minutes each day physically changes brain, making you less anxious, and more rational and empathetic. -Besides increasing physical strength and flexibility, yoga changes brain. Research suggests that in addition to reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, yoga protects the brain from shrinking with age. -Exercise daily as it would can help offset the cognitive decline brought on by aging and increasingly sedentary lifestyles. -Get enough sleep. On average, adults need between 7.5 and 9 hours of sleep each night. When you aren’t getting enough sleep, it affects your brain’s ability to do this, and your memory suffers. -Spend time with people whose company you enjoy, and who make you feel like the best version of you. -laughter can improve short-term memory in older adults. -Cutting down on your use of technology (i.e. Sitting in front of your computer, phone, or tablet) for even 30 minutes can improve your brain health and help you think more deeply.

My brother is 25 years old. He is a sardar. My father had a transferable job. So people in other cities do not know much about them. Often, fun used to be made of his' jooda' (head bun). Also, sometimes my father used to humilate him or tell him to get out of the house. He still remembers what my father used to do. My father loves both of us a lot but when angry he used to behave like this. He was an extreme, when he used to love, he went of the way and when he was angry, he would go crazy. Over the years, he has mellowed down. My mother is a typical mother, very soft and lovable. My brother dominates over her. He used to hit her often (when no one was around). Once my brother crossed the limit(he was around 18 years), my mother went to her brother' s place. After that he stopped hitting but now he has stopped going to any of the relatives(maybe due to embarrasment). He didn' t go to college. He completed his course via correspondence. Earlier, he used to go for a walk to a nearby park. Now he has stopped it ( he fears something will fall on him or someone will hit him). Once he fell ill due to a stomach infection. Now he feels that something is entering his mouth and he keeps spitting every now and then. He keeps washing his hands and keeps rinsing his mouth. He doesn' t go out to open the door for fear of infection. He doesn' t eat food with his hands (my mother breaks the roti and he eats it with his spoon). My parents had gone to a psychiatrist befor. The doctor said that he is suffering from ocd and a lot of negativity. He even said that my brother is too sharp and for once even the doctor was confused. My father used to earlier think that he was lazy but now he he has accepted that he needs treatment. The problem is till my brother does not willingly get himself treated, it is of no use. My mother continues to do his work thinking that he is ill. He literally keeps her on her toes. Of late, my brother hardly takes bath and keeps sleeping for 16-18 hours. Whenever I try to ask him about what he wants to do with his future, he gets angry and tries to avoid the question. I would also like to mention that he had suffered from tb when he was 17 years. Kindly help/suggest/advice.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Your mother need to be counselled that your brother is suffering from ocd and she can not help him throughout his life and if ocd is not treated on time it will be difficult to treat and can turn into psychosis.

Dear doctor please give me suggestion for how to stop smoking I need your help please sir.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
First of all you have made an excellent decision. Now stick to it and follow these recommendations: When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.
