Dear lybrate user. It is pathetic to state that you are unable to come out of your past thoughts. You forgot many things and you can forget these to. Only problem is, psychology says, if you try hard to forget something, it will continue haunting you. Therefore, I suggest not to try forget the past. Instead, learn to relish the past. I suggest online counseling and cognitive therapy. Take care.

I am having problems in studies. It can't goes properly to my brain. Specially in Maths. Then what should I do or have food.

All that you require is in this response: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Dear, Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you?re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse?no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn?t easy. But it?s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Take care.

Dear, distraction of mind is a routine affair. To help you control your thoughts and to divert them, we have many creative ideas under psychotherapy. You must be able to distinguish between mental disease and mental disorder. Your problem is a mental disorder. Not a mental disease. These mental disorders are usually treated with a combination of medicines and other means like awareness, meditation, psychotherapy techniques, life style changes etc. I think two or three counseling sessions and psycho therapy techniques should solve your problem. Let me know if you are willing to undergo counseling sessions and tailor made psycho therapy through mobile. Take care.

Hello Doctor, recently two of my relatives have gone through divorce due to which even my elder sister is sceptical to get married. What are the possible reasons behind failure of marriages in recent times and how to work on them? Please suggest in detail. Thanks, in advance.

M.S. Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate user, I understand your concern. A couple has the most intimate relationship. When two people get married, they are not aware that the other person is coming from a completely different background and a different family and hence is likely to have a different perception about everything in life. Unfortunately, both - the husband and the wife, think that their own perceptions, values and beliefs is" the correct" way and the other person is having wrong perception and values etc. They both need to understand each other's perceptions and also should be able to communicate to each other. Unfortunately, again, none of our academic courses teach us effective communication. Because of this, both the partners fail to communicate their needs, expectations, likes-dislikes, views etc to their spouse in assertive way. Many times both think that the spouse should" understand" their feelings, which does not happen. Now a days most of girls are working and they don't want shoulder the additional responsibility of being a mother and a cook, sweeper, cleaner etc at home. The times have changed but our society's outlook towards women has not changed. Our society still expects a wife to be very submissive and not to have her own rights or likes. Unless our society changes its views towards women, we will have problems in keeping the marriages intact. One more major reason for failed marriages in our country, is, undue interference by the parents (both sides). The parents need to respect the couple's privacy and they need to be within their boundaries. Because of our traditional upbringing even the husband/wife think that they still need to listen to their parents in every respect, which aggrivates the matter. To solve this problem" pre-marital" counselling is the best solution. A counsellor can help both (husband-wife), to understand their own personalities, their respective needs, values and expectations. Even the in-laws should have pre=marital counselling so that they also know their respective roles and responsibilities. Actually every boy and girl in our country needs to have pre-marital counselling even before they decide to marry a particular person. This will help them to find a suitable match for themselves and thus reducing future problems.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, (MRCPSYCH-UK)
Psychiatrist,
If you are an occasional chewer - with public messages, health awareness programs and your own doctors advice, you can quit. If you are a regular chewer, motivational therapy with a trained psychotherapist or a psychiatrist and enormous will power will help you quit. If you are a diseased smoker, consult a de addiction psychiatrist at the earliest. He may give you anti-craving medications and de addiction treatment.

Dear doctor
Stress or chronic anxiety does not have any health benefits? Due to chronic anxiety my weight is reduced....
You need to examine if your work is too stressful for various reasons. It is the one place you will be spending the greatest part of your awake life, more than even with your family! This being the case any stress there can take a severe toll: the stress in the work is mostly related to relationships. We are always into relationships and you need to find a very amicable way to interact with people. If it is people related, you will need to examine whether you are the cause or others the cause. If it has to do with workload, then you will need to discuss that with your colleagues first and if they think you are justified, then you will have to take it to the immediate boss. If it is injustice in the work spot, you will need to discuss it with the HR department. If you feel that you are doing more than you can manage or are qualified for, again you can consult the HR department. If you are emotionally distraught, then there may be some work for you to do with a counselor. This is where stress is mostly felt. When you do not express feelings you will land up with stress. Check what feelings you are not dealing with and then tackle that to find relief which is a permanent solution. To resolve it you need to deal with the unexpressed feelings which may have become a habit from childhood. Meet with a counselor and that person will help you process your feelings and find ways to express them once and for all and give you permanent relief. Your weight loss and dependence on medication will reduce drastically if you go for counseling also.
