Cardiomyopathy: Types and Treatments

Cardiomyopathy: Types and Treatments

Cardiomyopathy includes diseases involving the heart muscle. These diseases have various causes, types, symptoms and modes of treatment.

The heart muscle gets enlarged, thick or rigid. In several cases, the heart muscle tissue is replaced with a scar tissue. As this condition worsens, the heart gets weaker and the ability to pump blood is disrupted, which can cause heart failure or irregular beating of the heart. The weakened state of the heart can lead to valvar diseases.

The different types of cardiomyopathy are:

  • Hypertrophic CardiomyopathyThis is a common form and affects people of all ages. Men and women are affected equally. This condition arises due to the enlargement and thickening of the heart muscle. The ventricles, the septum and the lower heart chamber usually thicken, which causes obstruction in pumping of blood by the heart. This disease also causes stiffness in the ventricles, and cellular changes in the tissue.
  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy: This form of cardiomyopathy develops due to the enlargement and weakening of the ventricles. The issue arises from the left ventricle and develops over time. It may even affect the right ventricle. More effort is put in by the heart muscles for pumping blood and slowly the heart is unable to pump blood effectively. This condition may lead to heart failure, valve diseases or blood clots in the heart.
  • Restrictive CardiomyopathyThis disease occurs due to the stiffening of the ventricles, without thickening of the walls of the heart. The ventricles are not allowed to relax and do not receive a sufficient volume of blood supply. This condition causes heart failure and valvar problems over time.
  • Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia: This rare form of cardiomyopathy occurs when fat or fibrous tissues replace the muscle tissue of the right ventricle. This causes arrhythmias and disruption in the electrical signals of the heart. It generally affects teens and may cause cardiac arrest in athletes.
  • Unclassified Cardiomyopathy: Some types of cardiomyopathy of this category include left ventricular non compaction where the ventricles develop trabeculations. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is another disease where immense stress causes failure of the heart muscles.

Treatment: Many cases of cardiomyopathy come and go away on their own. Treatment for other cases depends on the severity and symptoms. The major treatment methods are:
Lifestyle changes meant for a healthier heart.

Modes of surgery for treatment of cardiomyopathy include:

Implant devices such as Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device, Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), Left ventricular assist device and pacemakers are fitted into the heart for better performance.

Cardiomyopathy can be of many different types, each arising from different situations and conditions. The mode of treatment depends on the severity of the complication or on the basis of symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Cardiologist.

What is hypertension and what are the characteristics of hypertension? To find out hypertension any tests is there?
Hypertension means a recorded BP higher than the normal range for age. There can be many reasons for it and it will be difficult to explain all that to you. To know if you have BP you can get your BP checked by a local doctor/cardiologist. And in case they find that you have hypertension then ask them to evaluate and suggest a plan of treatment. Hypertension may not have any signs at all or it may present with headaches, uneasy feeling, nose-bleeds, redness of eyes, breathless etc etc etc.

There are no specific drugs used to treat this condition, the treatment will as is common with a lot of heart diseases depend on the cause. The diastolic dysfunction treatment is generally aimed at treating a cause like diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. That leads to a stiff ventricle Calcium channel blocker drugs may be used to reduce the stiffness in ventricles.

Mr. Lybrate-user, usually a minimum of 30 minutes a day of physical activity is recommended to keep fit and prevent adding additional weight. So the amount of exercise being done by you (cycling) appears to be good enough. But still if you walk for another 20 minutes a day, that will add to keep fit as well as remain free from diabetes. Thanks for the question.

Hello there, for cough, take 2-2 teaspoonful of pranacharya kasantak by mixing it in hot water twice daily. Sitopaladi, praval and tankan bhasm churna taken with honey can also bring relief. Consume this 3 to 4 times a day for relief from dry cough; you can also drink tea with basil leaves or add ginger and black pepper in it. Salted hot water gargling also helps. And stay away from cold drinks and don't take milk when having cough.

Good Cholesterol Vs Bad Cholesterol

BHMS
Homeopath, Kolkata
Good Cholesterol Vs Bad Cholesterol

For a long time cholesterol in totality was seen as a bad thing for your body although the truth was a little more complicated than that. Cholesterol primarily is divided into two types, one of which can be categorized as bad cholesterol and the other as good cholesterol. Let's have an in-depth look at both the categories.

LDL or Low Density Lipoprotein aka bad cholesterol: Cholesterol is a wax like chemical which is found all over the body and it has important functions to perform. Cholesterol is carried all over the body by Lipoproteins. The low density lipoproteins are denoted as bad cholesterol as they can accumulate on the walls of the blood vessels and cause blockages resulting in many ailments. LDL levels of 190 and above are considered dangerous.

Some of the risks associated with it are:

  1. Heart disease
  2. Stroke
  3. Atherosclerosis
  4. peripheral artery disease among many others

HDL or High Density Lipoprotein aka good cholesterol: This is a form of cholesterol which is usually desired in higher quantities as it removes LDL from the system by dislodging it from the arteries and then carrying it through the bloodstream into the liver. The liver then breaks it down and removes it from the body. Thus, higher number of HDL cholesterol is always desirable. Some of the ideal numbers for HDL cholesterol within the body are:

For Women  - Ideal: 60 mg/dl, dangerous: 50 mg/dl or lower
For Men - Ideal: 60 mg/dl, dangerous: 50 mg/dl lower

The role of triglycerides:
Good and bad cholesterol levels also depend on the levels of triglycerides within the body and not just LDL or HDL cholesterol. Triglycerides are another type of fat which are used to store energy within the body, but can also affect your health. It is most associated with atherosclerosis when the levels of triglycerides are high within the body.

Some habits that contribute to high levels of it are:

  • Lack of physical activity
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Excesses in alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Bad diet and others

Thus the good cholesterol vs bad cholesterol war also includes other factors, most of which can be easily changed by making subtle changes in lifestyle and incorporating healthier habits. This will increase the good cholesterol and the other relevant elements and reduce the bad.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Donating blood reduces chances of heart attack

One should donate blood at least once in a year. Donating blood regularly has been shown in many reports to reduce chances of future heart attacks. Blood donation is also one of the best charities that one can do as it can save multiple lives through various components taken out of a single blood transfusion.

All those who are going for elective surgery should donate their blood well in advance and the same should be used at the time of surgery.

In the current medical tourism scenario, many patients who are Jehovah?s Witnesses refuse blood transfusion on religious grounds. They do not accept transfusion of whole blood or any of the four major components (blood cells, platelets, plasma and white cells). They are prepared to die rather than receive the blood. They also do not accept transfusion of stored blood including their own due to the belief that blood should not be taken out of the body and stored for any length of time. In such cases, every effort should be made to reduce blood loss, conserve blood and give drugs that can enhance hemoglobin formation.

A new concept called Bloodless Medicine has now become a reality where treatment, surgery and even emergency surgery can be done without using any blood.

It's difficult to do dieting, heavy exercise after a certain age and metabolism slows down but eating habits remain same specially in tv addicts. I can suggest healthy eating and healthy snacking, if you can change her habits, about check ups, I will suggest later. First things first. No diet charts, healthy eating will help you also. Give up sugar, sweets, fats, salt in moderation. Take lots of seasonal vegetables and fruits plus eating according to constitution. Take more proteins like milk and curds. All of these items have the much needed calcium, take fresh lemon. Take a spoon of honey added to it, and take with warm water every day in morning on empty stomach. Avoid things like snacks, street food, namkeem, street foods. Use minimum oils for cooking. Nothing new. Simple walk is best exercise. Encourage her to breathe fresh air near plants. Even if there's slight reduction in the weight but the body becomes more supple. Get her tested for blockages in heart by angiography or cardiac ct scan and get blood tested for sugar, thyroid profile done along with blood for lipids and ecg and may be halter test if she can tolerate. Get ultrasound abdomen. You get back here with reports. You will get more guidance from any of us here on the forum. Let her watch tv, if habitual of taking snacks in between, give her an apple.

First try diet and exercise measure for 4 weeks. Then repeat lipid profile and based on that it will be decided that u need medications in addition. For diet - Add vegetables and Fruits (as per your renal needs) in your diet, decrease sugar, fried food and carbs and improve your eating patterns. For details consult a dietician. For exercise - Start with brisk walking and target to increase it upto 40 mins daily. Also get your sugar and thyroid evaluated.
