Can molasses, spinach, dates, papaya, orange, grapes, broccoli, peanut be taken by a diabetic and kidney patient?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Can molasses, spinach, dates, papaya, orange, grapes, broccoli, peanut be taken by a diabetic and kidney patient?
lybrate-user.Thanks for the query. Molases is a rich source of carbohydrate, a tablespoonful gives 58 calories. Therefore it is bound to increase blood glucose level. If one takes that, then carbs from other sources have to be proportionately reduced. As regards papaya, orange, grapes (about 8 ), broccoli, peanuts (30 g a day) can be taken by a person with diabetes. But blood glucose control should be good. Thanks.

Yesterday we checked my mother sugar levels fasting is 102 is it normal or high. Please tell.
Lybrate-user, blood glucose 102 mg/100 ml, is normal level. Fasting 70 to 110 mg, pp up to 140 mg hba1c% 5.9 are all normal levels. Fasting 108 to 125 mg, pp 141 to 199 mg, hba1c% 5.9 to 6.4, these are all pre - diabetes levels. Fasting equal to or above 126 mg, pp equal to or above 200 mg and hba1c% equal and above 6.5 % are all confirming diabetes.

For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for long hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

lybrate-user, If you have hypothyroidism, then treatment with thyroxine needs to be started. With treatment it is essential to bring TSH level between 3 to 4 mU/L, then only all the symptoms will be in check. Thanks.

Hye, Thanks for the query. Your blood sugar levels are very high. You definitely need to go in for a personalised diet consultation to avoid the long term negative effects. Diabetes is a health condition that affects your body's production of insulin, which is needed to control your blood sugar levels. When you eat, your body begins to store sugar in its cells, but as a diabetic, your body does not produce enough insulin to help control how much sugar is being stored. Spikes in blood sugar levels from eating can cause you to feel fatigued and lethargic, due to excess sugar in your bloodstream and cells. When enough insulin is once again produced to regulate your blood sugar levels, the glucose can be burned off as energy, thereby making you feel less fatigued. For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - The sugar levels will fluctuate depending on what you ate or did not eat, stress levels and activity levels. You have to try and manage a balanced carb intake. Have small frequent meals. Do not fast for long hours. You have to eat 3 main and 3 mid meals. Your diet must include whole grains, seasonal fruits, vegetables, small amounts of nuts and dairy and pulses or dals or lean meats like chicken or fish and egg. Starchy vegetables need to be planned into the diet. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Avoid exercise if sugar levels are above 250 mg/dl. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

How brain gets effected due to hypoglycaemia? Is there any test to detect insulin overdose as cause of hypoglycaemia? Is the effect to brain fatal? Please tell.

Endocrinologist, Thane
How brain gets effected due to hypoglycaemia? Is there any test to detect insulin overdose as cause of hypoglycaemia?...
Dear lybrate-user, low sugar or hypoglycemia is defined as blood sugar less than 72 mg% it is mainly diagnosed based on symptoms of low sugar. Brain use glucose only as it's food so when sugar goes low brain definitely feels hurt! palpitation, shakiness of hands, sweating and giddiness or sleepiness followed by coma or unconsciousness is a sequence of symptoms seen with progressive low sugar. We routinely never ask for serum insulin levels to diagnose hypoglycemia. Hope this helps you.
