I have got ulcers in the mouth. One on the underside of the tongue and other on the inner lining of the cheek. What are some home remedies, or medication if necessary? Also, what are the causes of ulcers in mouth?

MDS, BDS
Dentist, Pune
Dear Lybrate user, Mouth ulcers have multiple reasons. Most of the times the causes are related to stress, burns from hot foods, injury from ill fitting dentures, tooth brush trauma, braces, accidental biting, sharp tooth. Nutritional deficiencies can contribute to this. Certain medications including the common pain killer can result into Mouth ulcers In some cases underlying health conditions cause ulcers. Such as Viral infections, Gastrointestinal diseases, Immune deficiencies etc. When to visit your nearby dentist: Ulcers are taking longer time to heal, three weeks or more Ulcers are unusually larger in size Ulcers are spreading When associated with high grade fever When the pain is unbearable even after taking over the counter medicines, avoiding spicy foods When there is difficulty in drinking sufficient fluids.

Hi lybrate-user you do not need to worry right away White patches are little away from normal conditions but they are mostly not dangerous In very few case if you experience sign like burning sensation or inability to open you mouth due to fibrous tissue formation in them then a further involvement is required However in these situations also these patches becoming cancer is not always certain.

Teeth and gums are indispensable Do us as we chew our food. Digestion begin in mouth. diabetes affect our oral cavity leads to loosening of tooth, swelling of gums, and also bone loss around the teeth leads to pus pain, discomfort. Researchers have proved diabetes to be a double edge sword means it impairs sugar control & also let our body fail to cope with it.

Hello Doctor, I have heard that when it burns use tooth paste on it so that it will not bulge. Is this true?

Hello Doctor, I have heard that when it burns use tooth paste on it so that it will not bulge. Is this true?
It only reduces the burning by providing coldness. Instead use turmeric powder mixed in water. It has healing property.

You may need cleaning, root canal treatment & capping. Until then apply clove oil on the decayed tooth. Rinse frequently with mouth wash.
