Kidney stones are a very common health problem. They form from the chemicals in urine, such as uric acid, phosphorous, calcium and oxalic acid. Other common causes of kidney stones are excessive consumption of vitamin d, a mineral imbalance, dehydration, gout and an improper diet irrespective of the size of the kidney stones, they can cause severe pain. Other symptoms include a desire to urinate frequently, painful urination, nausea, vomiting and excessive sweating. Pomegranate both the seeds and juice of pomegranates have astringent properties that can help in the treatment of kidney stones try to eat one whole pomegranate or drink one glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice daily. You can mix pomegranate in a fruit salad also. Another option is to grind one tablespoon of pomegranate seeds into a fine paste. Eat this paste along with a cup of horse gram soup once daily. This remedy will help dissolve the stones. Being high in fiber, kidney beans can be effective in the treatment of any kind of kidney or bladder problem, including kidney stones? remove the beans from inside the pods, then put the beans in hot water. Simmer the water on low flame for hours until the beans become soft and tender. Strain the liquid and allow it to cool. Strain the liquid again. Drink it several times throughout the day to relieve kidney stone pain. This liquid should not be kept for more than 24 hours, as it will lose its therapeutic properties? you can also eat kidney beans in soup or salad. Patient information leaflet on kidney stones. Having a kidney stone can be painful and distressing. Most stones pass out of the body without any treatment. But for those that don't, there are good treatments available. What are kidney stones? kidney stones are solid, stone-like lumps that can form in your kidneys. They are made from waste chemicals in your urine. Stones can also form in your bladder and the tubes that carry urine from your kidneys to your bladder (these are called ureters). Stones can stay in your kidneys without causing problems. But some might travel out of your body in the flow of urine. If they are very small, they can pass out of your body without you noticing. But larger ones can rub against the tubes or even get stuck. This can be extremely painful. There are four types of kidney stones? the most common type contains calcium. These stones are called calcium oxalate stones? uric acid stones form if there is too much uric acid in your urine. Uric acid is a waste product made when food is digested? struvite stones develop after a urinary infection, such as cystitis? cystine stones are caused by a rare inherited condition called cystinuria. It is important to know what kind of stone you have, as this will affect your treatment to prevent future stones. What are the symptoms? the main symptom is pain. This can be a dull ache in your back or side, or an extremely sharp, cramping pain. The pain usually comes on suddenly. It might spread down to your tummy or groin. You might also? feel sweaty or sick? be sick? find blood in your urine. This is caused by the stone rubbing against the walls of the ureter? need to urinate more often or feel a burning sensation when you urinate. Your doctor is likely to suspect you have a kidney stone if you have sudden, severe pain in your side and blood in your urine. You'll probably be sent to hospital for an x-ray. If you have a kidney stone, these tests may show how big the stone is and where it is stuck. If the x-ray does not show a kidney stone, you will probably have more tests to find out what's causing the pain. You may not get any symptoms with a kidney stone. You might find out you have one when you have an x-ray for another reason. What treatments work? stones that are less than 1 centimetre across often pass out of the body without any treatment. It can take two days to four weeks for this to happen. You can help the process along by drinking plenty of water to increase the flow of urine. You'll also need to take strong painkillers for the pain. If you have a stone stuck in a tube (ureter), your doctor might recommend taking a medicine called an alpha-blocker. This type of drug is often used to treat high blood pressure or symptoms of an enlarged prostate, but studies show it can also help stones to pass through the ureters faster. You'll probably be able to stay at home during this time, although you may need x-rays to check on the progress of the stone. Your doctor may ask you to catch the stone with a tea strainer or something similar as it comes out. This is so your doctor can see what type of stone you have. Knowing the type of stone will help them work out what you can do to prevent more stones. Surgical treatments larger stones and those that don't pass out of the body need treatment. All the following treatments work well? shock wave therapy uses shock waves to break up stones into small pieces that can pass out of the body. Many stones are dealt with this way and it avoids any operation. You might sit in a tub of water or lie on a table to have this treatment. You'll have a local anaesthetic to numb the area that's being treated. You may need several treatments to break up hard or large stones. The risk of side effects after this treatment is small. But you could get an infection in your kidney or a stone stuck in your ureter afterwards? you may need a minor operation if a stone in your kidney is large or in an awkward place. It's called a percutaneous nephrolithotomy (pcnl. You will have a general anaesthetic, so you will not be awake for the operation. You will probably have to stay in hospital. The doctor will make a small cut in your back and pass a needle and a very thin tube into your kidney to remove the stone. Like all operations, there can be problems (complications). The main ones are constipation and infections. Kidney stones? if the stone is stuck in a tube (ureter), you may have a ureteroscopy. You don't need any cuts made in your body for this, and you can probably go home the same day. You can have a local or general anaesthetic. The doctor feeds a long, thin wire up through your bladder and into the ureter to reach the stone. The doctor then either removes the stone or breaks it up with shock waves. This procedure works well, but it does have risks. In one study, about 1 out of 10 people who had this treatment had a damaged or torn ureter afterwards. What will happen to me? if you've had a kidney stone you have about a 1 in 2 chance of getting another one within five years to seven years. Your doctor can prescribe medicines to help stop you getting some types of stones. The type of medicine you get depends on the type of stone you've had. For example, you may need to take diuretics (water pills) to reduce calcium in your urine if your stone contained calcium. If you have too much uric acid in your urine you might be given a drug called allopurinol (the brand names are caplenal, cosuric, and zyloric). Your risk of getting more stones may also be affected by what you eat and drink. To reduce your risk, you can? drink more than two litres of water a day? eat a healthy diet, including calcium but not calcium supplements. Foods rich in calcium include milk and other dairy products, peas and beans, leafy green vegetables, nuts, and bony fish like sardines and salmon? avoid using lots of salt? eat more vegetables. Vegetables make the urine less acidic. If you've had a calcium oxalate stone, you may need to reduce the amount of oxalate in your diet. This means cutting down on chocolate, nuts, rhubarb, strawberries, spinach, coffee, and tea. But changes in diet don't work for everyone, and there is not a lot of evidence to show how well they work. So it's important to talk to your doctor before making big changes to what you eat.

Most people urinate between six and eight times a day. But if you're drinking plenty, it's not abnormal to go as many as 10 times a day.excess urination could be due to urinary tract infection or obstruction.

I am of age 36 male. Recently a significant post residual volume of urine (150 ml out of 380 ml) was found in scanning. My urologist examined and first suggested a tablet for 15 days. After that, he told to do cystoscopy, but then changed his mind, and observed my urine flow. He told cystoscopy is not necessary and inserted a cathetar tube and told there is no serious problem, as the tube was able to reach bladder without any pain. He told me to continue the tablet. But the problem remains unsolved. Kindly tell me what can possible step further?

Dear , it appears that you have obstruction in the flow of urine. Passage of catheter by your urologist rules out stricture of urethra. Most likely cause would be bladder neck obstruction. It is not a disease4 but a mechanical prolem. For this medication s are available like alpha blockers ; like temsulocin 0.4 mg at bed time. It would have been better if you had mentioned the name of the tablets you are taking. Ideally you should have uroflometry and cystourethroscopy to confirm the diagnosis and to see sevearity of obstruction. Though medicines help a lot ideal treatment would beendoscopic surgery. Start drinking a lot water for now. Dr. Kiram mehta.

Hello lybrate-user, you have multiple problems and you definitely need to get a thorough check up. You can consult me if you want a homoeopathic or naturopathy remedy for your problem. The best treatment of gout consists of restoring the balance of vata (air element) and detoxifying the blood. High protein diet should be avoided in cases of increased uric acid. Take maha rasnadi kwath 2-2 tsf twice a day. Take maha yograj guggul 1-1 twice a day. Kaishor guggulguggul and chandraprabha vati 1-1 twice a day. Avoid junk food. Fermented food. Spicy food. Tea. Coffee. Do pranayama early morning. Avoid alcohol consumption.

I am a 35 year old male 6ft, 80 kgs. I have been smoking an average of 5 cigarettes per day for last 20 years. My health was good until 5 years back, my mother expired due to cardiac arrest, at home and in front of my eyes. I was very attached to my mother and could not handle the trauma. Everyday post that day, I used to blank out and felt racing heartbeats, and a feeling of getting passed out. Everyday my father used to take me to hospital in emergency wherein doctors would do ecg and echo too of a couple of occasions. Everyone suggested that trauma was the reason behind all this feeling. I resumed office after a couple of weeks and tried to forget the issue. After about 6 months, I was driving back from office when I felt an urgency to pass urine which I did. 15 minutes later I felt palpitations and again an urge to ease out. For the remaining portion of my journey I kept on urinating every 5-10 minutes and my hands, face and feet started tingling. By the time I pulled up at a nursing home, my whole body was shaking vigorously. When I entered doctor' s cabin, my hands, feet and tongue started twisting and I was barely able to speak anything. Doctor injected something in my arm post which I was fine in 5 min. He told me that this is panic attack. After that day I had been feeling tingling in my hands, feet and face on a daily basis along with palpitations and frequent urination. I have consulted numerous cardiologists, gastro experts, general physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and the list is unending. Although with my latest treatment, things are in control and I do not face the panic attacks daily, but that feeling of tingling does not go away, coupled with the persistent fear of dying. I want to regain the same mental and physical self confidence that I had before my mother' s death. Please help.

Your mother? s death has left a huge vacuum in your life, and that has triggered the panic attack. The smoking would have contributed to the poor response to stress and trauma. The tingling is probably the effect of this long period of smoking. You need to develop you physical constitution and your emotional fitness. The smoking has to go. These panic attacks are nothing but an exaggeration of your response to normal stimulus. The death you witnessed of your mother has to be wiped out of your memory banks through some therapy. Also, I suspect that your attachment to your mother may border on some unhealthy symbiosis with her. You were 30 years that that time and I think that you should have been able to handle that situation better. Now, I don? t want you to get the notion that her death was to be taken lightly or that it was easy. Relatively speaking, a person of your age could have handled it better. However, it is the closeness that you had with her that made you vulnerable. So you need to deal with that in counseling. Further to develop emotional fitness, you must work on, your fear in particular, and learn to express it and reach out from it. You are having daily trauma and reactions of self-induced heart attack-like symptoms and you cannot live like this except by some extensive counseling. You will be surprised how quickly and effectively these symptoms will disappear, if you cooperate and go for therapy. The mind is very powerful and together with unexpressed emotions can play havoc with your life and system. After seeking the doctor? s permission, I suggest that you get into a healthy regimen of exercise, good diet, and proper sleep; and perhaps settle down in marriage. This latter will help generally, and not as a solution to your problem.
