My son is 21 months old and having fever approx 101. Can we give crocin to him along with Zinconia that he is supposed to take for next 3 days, as he recently had diarrhea?

My son is 21 months old and having fever approx 101. Can we give crocin to him along with Zinconia that he is suppose...
Hello, Thanks for your query on Lybrate "As" per your clinical history is concerned do take [crocin] every 8 hours for fever and add [AB-CEF SYR dry syrup] twice a day for diarrhea. Take ORS fluid after every motion to prevent dehydration. Do follow lifestyle modifications like this- 1)Wash your hands before and after preparing food. In addition, wash your hands after handling uncooked meat, using the toilet, changing diapers, sneezing, coughing and blowing your nose.Lather with soap for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when washing isn't possible. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when you can't get to a sink. 2)Serve food right away or refrigerate it after it has been cooked or reheated. Avoid raw fruits and vegetables unless you can peel them yourself. Also, avoid raw or undercooked dairy foods. 3)Watch what you drink. Drink bottled water or boiled water. Hope that helps

My sons age is 7 month +. My question is that how much water should I give him in a day?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician, Alappuzha
If he is breastfed only he does not need additional water, but he is on other feeds by now. From 6 to 12 months, babies do not need much water but introducing some in a bottle or sippy cup can help them get used to the taste (or lack thereof) and consistency of the liquid. Limiting water to about 2 to 4 ounces per day is the typical recommendation as babies make the transition from an all-liquid diet to one involving solids, although some babies may benefit from closer to 6 to 8 ounces per day (such as in the case of constipation or extremely hot and humid weather). My child baby girl aged 2.6 weight is 11 kg. But her birth weight was 1.6kg. She is 32 week born. Is her weight is Ok according to her age. And now she started going pre- school and usually caught by cold n cough. Sometimes with fever and without fever. Her cough (not dry) persist for 8 - 9 days. What extra supplements and food should I give to her?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
Birthweight becomes 4 times by 2.5 years. According to that it's normal. As the child is going to school at an early age more prone to get viral infections from other children. No need to give any supplements. Give natur. Al nutritious foods. Give for worms.

How to increase breast milk in quantity for baby? Any medicine or any natural remedy.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Many people ask this question in a mistaken belief that the milk production in the mother is less. Most often it is not true. If the baby is passing plenty of urine, 5-6 semi formed stools per day and if the baby is gaining weight, the breast milk is sufficient. However to ensure good supply of milk, the mother must feed the baby often to ensure the" let down reflex" which happens only when the baby suckles. Drink plenty of water and take frequent small nutritious meals.(extra calories 300-500, in form of ghee, butter are helpful. Stop worrying. Stress reduces milk production. Have sufficient privacy, nurse the baby in peace. Methi dana, zeera plenty of dal and vegetables and fruits will do the trick. Enjoy the feeding, don't treat it as a burden. Take help from an experienced person.

ADHD in Kids - Warning Signs!

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
ADHD in Kids - Warning Signs!

ADHD refers to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is a brain-related condition found among preschoolers, children, teenagers and in many cases extends well into adulthood. These individuals have significant impairment in academics as well as social situations and interpersonal relations. The child has difficulty sustaining attention, phases of hyper activeness and cannot control his/her impulses which make their day to day life at school and home difficult.

ADHD Symptoms

The symptoms of this disorder among children can be categorized under three headings.

  1. Hyperactivity which includes
    1. Fidgeting
    2. Restlessness
    3. Inability to stay at one place runs around and tries to climb things
    4. Trouble playing quietly
    5. Excessive talking
  2. Inattention, which can be divided into symptoms like
    1. Getting easily distracted
    2. Tendency to loose things
    3. Daydreaming
    4. Facing problems related to organizing things
    5. Not listening carefully
    6. Forgetting about daily activities, carelessness
  3. Impulsiveness

    1. Interrupts others as they speak and talks out of turn
    2. Answers questions without listening to what has been asked
    3. Not being able to wait for their turn to come

Prevalence :
10-12% of school children before puberty are affected by one or more types of ADHD. ADHD especially hyperactivity is more prevalent in boys than in girls, with the ratio up to 9:1. Inattention and poor concentration are more commonly seen amongst girls. The rate of ADHD in parents and sibling of children with ADHD is 5-10 times higher than in the general population.

ADHD Causes
The probable causes of ADHD among children are,

  1. Neurodevelopmental changes - Poorly developed activity of the brain particularly in the areas that control attention and concentration cause ADHD. This causes an imbalance in the neurotransmitters or the chemicals important for brain functioning and development.
  2. Genetic Factors - genetic studies show that ADHD is largely hereditary in nature with a heritability of 75% approximately.

My daughter has got Jaundice, whose age is 8 days. What is the prevention for her mother and for the daughter? And what food we give to the mother of the child?

Hi lybrate-user, Hope your baby is recovering from jaundice. The jaundice in neonate I.e <1 months old baby is not due to infection and is not usually affected by diet of mother. The best prevention is giving good diet to the mother so that she can give good amount of breast milk to her baby. Other causes like blood group mismatch or other liver weakness may not be preventable and hence most of the newborns (80%) get jaundice in their first few days of life. Regards.

Hi, please suggest a diet for 2 years baby boy. His weight is 9 kgs. He has Down syndrome. He had a heart surgery but now ut is totally curried. His muscle tone is very poor. So please suggest a good diet plan Thanks.

MBBS, MD-Pediatrics, DM - Medical Genetics
Geneticist, Gurgaon
Hi, please suggest a diet for 2 years baby boy. His weight is 9 kgs. He has Down syndrome. He had a heart surgery but...
Hi, thank you for the question. The diet for a toddler with Down Syndrome would not differ much from the diet of a healthy toddler. However, because of poor muscle tone, the physical development of children with Down syndrome is delayed. They also have a tendency to gain weight. The increased weight along with poor physical activity due to decreased tone puts extra stress on muscles which further makes them weak. Hence, it is important that we take care, about keeping the diet such, that it is balanced, nutricious, less fatty so that weight can be kept towards more lean side as compared to other children of same age.
