My eyes have become red. I face difficulty in opening my eyes in the morning. I also face severe eyes pain sometimes. What should I do?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

My eyes have become red. I face difficulty in opening my eyes in the morning. I also face severe eyes pain sometimes....
Eyes appear red because the vessels at the surface of the white portion of the eye (sclera) become swollen. Vessels may swell due to: • Eye dryness • Too much sun exposure • Dust or other particles in the eye • Allergies • Infection • Injury Eye infections or inflammation can cause redness as well as possible itching, discharge, pain, or vision problems. These may be due to: • Blepharitis: Swelling along the edge of the eyelid. • Conjunctivitis: Swelling or infection of the clear tissue that lines the eyelids and covers the surface of the eye (the conjunctiva). This is often referred to as "pink eye." • Corneal ulcers: Sores on the cornea most often caused by a serious bacterial or viral infection. • Uveitis: Inflammation of the uvea, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. The cause is most often not known. It may be related to an autoimmune disorder, infection, or exposure to toxins. The type of uveitis that causes the worst red eye is called iritis, in which only the iris is inflamed. Other potential causes of eye redness include: • Colds or allergies . • Acute glaucoma: A sudden increase in eye pressure that is extremely painful and causes serious visual problems. This is a medical emergency. The more common form of glaucoma is chronic and gradual. • Corneal scratches: Injuries caused by sand, dust, or overuse of contact lenses. Sometimes, a bright red spot, called a subconjunctival hemorrhage, will appear on the white of the eye. This often happens after straining or coughing, which causes a broken blood vessel on the surface of the eye. Most often, there is no pain and your vision is normal. It is almost never a serious problem. Because the blood leaks into the conjunctiva, which is clear, you cannot wipe or rinse the blood away. Like a bruise, the red spot will go away within a week or two. So,visit a local eyespecialist. The diagnosis of your problem in eyes can only be made by local examination of eyes

Dear lybrate user, red eyes could be because of many reasons but commonly it is due to allergy or infection. You need to visit eye specialist to differentiate between the two as the treatment is different. Also get your eyes checked for any glass power

I haven't slept for 3 days. Now there are always tears coming from my eyes constantly. What should I do?

I haven't slept for 3 days. Now there are always tears coming from my eyes constantly. What should I do?
There are three possible reasons why your eye is streaming. First, your body could simply be producing too many tears. This is usually because the front surface of the eye is inflamed due to an ulcer or infection. It's not always easy to spot, but it can be treated with antibiotic drops. However, much more likely is a problem with the eye's drainage system, caused by a blockage in the punctum. This is the plughole through which tears drain off from the front of the eye. Each eye has a punctum in the upper lid and one in the lower lid, at the corner of your eye nearest your nose. You can easily see the inner punctum if you look closely in a mirror. A blockage can occur as a result of a cold or mild infection - the hole gets blocked with gunge. It can easily be sorted out by an eye specialist under a local anaesthetic - he will probe the punctum and clear it out. Alternatively, the pipework from the punctum could be blocked - again, perhaps with mucus - or it may be that the punctum is no longer correctly attached to the eyeball. This is common in older people, when the eyelid sags (usually due to stretching of the tissues, which lose elasticity as you age). As a result, the punctum no longer reaches to the surface of the eye, so it can't drain away the tears.

Just like with asthma, which is also allergic reaction in the lungs, your nose is also reacting to allergen in the environment. Your ent, skin or allergy specialist will keep this under control. It is true you will require some simple medicines in some seasons. You should not get alarmed by this minor problem.

Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. Dha is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for strengthening eye muscles: -begin by partially closing your eyes; the lids should only be halfway shut. After holding for 10-15 seconds, close your eyes very slowly. Take a few deep breaths to increase oxygen in the blood. -warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. -hold a pen at arm's length. Focus your gaze on the tip of the pen. Bring the pen closer to your nose at a slow and steady pace. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times. -concentrate your vision on the tip of your nose. Then shift your gaze to an object further away, either at arm's length or 20 feet away. Then shift your eyes back to the tip of your nose. Repeat this exercise 10 times. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Begin by look to the left-most position (without moving your head) and hold to stretch your eye muscles. Hold for 5 counts. Blink and return your gaze back to look straight in front of you.
